By 'mostly', I take it you meant his general hit to miss ratio? I find it hard enough keeping track of the critically lauded stuff. But in 2011, 'I'm Gay (I'm Happy)' was great, and 'Angels Exodus' was pretty good as well. That said, Wikipedia tells me he released 11 mixtapes last year alone (!)

MikoMcha, Monday, 2 April 2012 15:23 (twelve years ago) link

'i'm gay' was terrible

though i do like how lil' b is basically turning rap fans in to frank zappa completists

the penultimate prophets (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 2 April 2012 18:26 (twelve years ago) link

actually robert pollard might be more appropriate

the penultimate prophets (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 2 April 2012 18:26 (twelve years ago) link

i think you mean lil b is turning robert pollard fans into mixtape completists

'I'm Gay (I'm Happy)' was great, and 'Angels Exodus' was pretty good as well.

I'm including these on the boring side. He's done better trad-rap backpacker stuff elsewhere. But yes, his hit-miss ratio was pretty low for a while.

TALiB KWELi SODMG (The Reverend), Monday, 2 April 2012 20:12 (twelve years ago) link

What are some of his better backpacker tracks/tapes in your opinion Rev? I like a lot of his stuff in that vein, mostly off Illusions of Grandeur but some of Angels and I'm Gay too, there's just so much out there

So Arabian Spruce (Whitey on the Moon), Monday, 2 April 2012 20:21 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, weird. I liked those albums, but didn't listen to much else. Wondering what people rate from him.

MikoMcha, Monday, 2 April 2012 20:54 (twelve years ago) link

#1 bitch mixtape is his best work in a while.

UnderControl, Monday, 2 April 2012 21:37 (twelve years ago) link

ten years from now, i'm pretty sure i'll still be listening to "6 kiss".

sisilafami, Monday, 2 April 2012 22:02 (twelve years ago) link

Sure 6 Kiss is good, that's probably the only other full release I know well.

Was making my way through this playlist over the weekend, there lots of interesting stuff on here I hadn't heard before: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=AL94UKMTqg-9CMiVOo8CbWMwv2yr7wQTOH

I think it's hilarious because these beats are clearly what Lil B thinks are backpacker profound-rap beats, and that makes me smile.

not sure which of those are sarcastic responses, but it kinda makes sense. on first listen they can both be dismissed initially as "funny" artists by those who expect serious cat is serious in their music, but the more you spend time with 'em you realize they're both really fucking good at aping a wide range of styles within their respective wheelhouses.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 16:51 (twelve years ago) link
