yeah he is pretty easy to hate lately, but he used to be the nicest one. i will always love him for the carousel scene where he burst into tears.

I'm digging Ginsburg, don't think tooyoungwoodyallen is a bad thing in this context at all. I've been missing midcentury "ethnic" Brooklyn ever since Peggy's family starved to death from neglect.

i miss pretentious gay beardo

he doesn't remind me that much of woody allen specifically; he just seems like a random nebbishy jewish guy.

IIRC, Heinz wasn't exactly thrilled at that endorsement.

Neither was Daltrey. The beans were cold, and he caught pneumonia from the photo session.

Ginsburg is Woody/Lenny/Dustin in spirit.

harry munchies! new copywriter ginsburg!! peggy-roger scenes!!! i hope there's way more of all three

Mordy, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 02:04 (twelve years ago) link

also, ginsburg's dad benching him was way bizarre and strange

Mordy, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 02:12 (twelve years ago) link

Harry Is a mediocre person but hilarious character. His fumbling is amazing, and I think he'll continue to be moderately useful but always just a bit off any mark.

I liked Don and Harry talking to the Stones fans, and Harry going with the more "savvy" one. The girl who was talking to Don is on the Fox show Lie to Me and I think she is pretty good!

Can you translate Ginsberg's dad for us, Mordy? I am perhaps misremembering it as yiddish, I was listening distractedly.

mh, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 02:39 (twelve years ago) link

hebrew, he was giving him the traditional blessing you give your kids on friday night. there's a version for boys and for girls (when we bring shabbat in early for the baby, or it starts earlier, i say it to my daughter). the boys' version, which is what the show went with, translates as: "may god bless you as he blessed efraim and menashah. may the lord bless you and keep you. may the lord cause his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you. may the lord turn his face to you and grant you peace." (part of it comes from Numbers, 6:24-26 and doubles as the Cohan blessing on high holidays, you know, when they do the Spock 'live long and propser' thing and everyone looks away)

Mordy, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 02:47 (twelve years ago) link

it was just super out of place. i don't know any jewish father who would spontaneously break out one of those in the middle of nowhere. either the writers are particularly tone-deaf about this, or maybe the dad is losing his mind or something?

Mordy, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 02:48 (twelve years ago) link

giving that blessing is called benching?

mizzell, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 02:51 (twelve years ago) link

sorry, i'm really tired + accidental code-switched. it's just yiddish for blessing

Mordy, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 02:58 (twelve years ago) link

by far the best shot from that set imo:

Harry is so amusing

Teenage Mutant Ninja Body Image (latebloomer), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 03:11 (twelve years ago) link

wow, I'm glad I asked! Sounds like it kind of reads as "writers want to make sure you know this guy is totally Jewish." I assumed it was some sort of blessing, although attributed it more to celebration related to his job? kind of wacky when juxtaposed with the "let's go get some women" bit, for sure

mh, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 03:18 (twelve years ago) link

I know how the sausage gets made and sausage-making at this level is still p amazing to me.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 03:59 (twelve years ago) link

the blessing scene was great because it came right after him suggesting a pair of older/younger whores, he is obviously a little something

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 05:58 (twelve years ago) link

I liked the phone convo between Betty and Don, where she made him tell her it would be okay

After railing against her last week I felt kinda bummed for her this week, lol hi I r a hypocrite ;)

god the interiors are getting kind of ghastly huh

even at her most sympthetic/vulnerable it was noticeable that when she gets the good news, betty's second thought is "now i don't have an excuse for being fat." lol shallow betty.

jewish copywriter has a lot of promise for the show, i think. did you notice he wore jeans to his interview?

remember that peggy's boyfriend and roger's wife are both jewish.

I liked how as far as Betty is concerned, Megan is 20.

Mike Love Costume Jewelry on Etsy (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 09:41 (twelve years ago) link

Harry isn't terrible, just useless and overpromoted because he happened to luck out at the right time. But then this is an organisation where Roger still has a job, so...

Henry didn't tell Betty that Don had called to, y'know, find out whether she had cancer or not. That's going to kick off in time.

I didn't really expect the camera to follow Ginsberg home and I don't really get why it did. The character has potential but they've never really bothered to do that with Ken or Harry.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 09:46 (twelve years ago) link

presumably odd Ginsberg Sr is going to be a significant presence over time in a way Ken or Harry's families aren't

seven league bootie (James Morrison), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 10:25 (twelve years ago) link

they're presumably setting him to be a major character the way they did peggy

where do i know that actor from?

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 11:36 (twelve years ago) link

Betty sais Megan is 20, but later in the episode Megan says she's 26.

Very curious to see if Stan's prediction that Michael will outshine Peggy comes true.

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 12:47 (twelve years ago) link

No kidding, Betty's perspective way skewed. Megan's 26, and Betty is what, still early 30s? I get where she's coming from in that she feels like Megan's a know-nothing youth, especially with the marriage/kids/social society bit, but it's almost like the two of them are separated by only a handful of years and a complete social generation.

mh, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 13:45 (twelve years ago) link

I think Betty also feels older because she married an older politician and has a lot of responsibilities that Megan does not have -- contrast her ancient, forbidding house with the hip apartment Don and Megan are living in.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 14:00 (twelve years ago) link

Kind of sad about Don's lack of reinvention. The guy can relate to all kinds of people, but he's really no good at changing himself in any major way.

mh, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 14:02 (twelve years ago) link

it's funny how everyone in this thread keeps going on about how useless harry is when he is actually kind of the only business visionary in the show, realized the potential of and built the whole TV department and probably kept both firms afloat? but he's bumbling and fattish so you have an excuse to feel superior to him

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 14:21 (twelve years ago) link

if there is anyone who is in tune with the common man, it is Harry

mh, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 14:24 (twelve years ago) link

I'm guessing Bobby Morse has never sung on this thing.

also, they are doing George Romney ads?

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 14:24 (twelve years ago) link

No, Betty's politician husband fired off a one-liner about not wanting to meet with Romney in Michigan
