Will people be invited to Cinco de Mayo stuff then? I feel like there are a lot of 5/5 themed events around here.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:43 (twelve years ago) link

xp - I guess that's possible, but I was thinking about doing something day/early evening?

two overweight dachshunds with three eyes (La Lechera), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:45 (twelve years ago) link

I would totally be down for hanging with some witches.

tanuki, Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:46 (twelve years ago) link

festive dress will be optional, though clothing will be required

I don't feel like Cinco de Mayo is too big of a deal around here?

Festive dress! YES.

Will there be a Maypole?

carl agatha, Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:54 (twelve years ago) link

If making this happen is "raising the maypole", then I guess it was my responsibility to do that since this is a leap year. We can also take a few minutes to celebrate our rights as workers who enjoy a 5 day work week.

Germany

In rural regions of Germany, especially the Harz Mountains, Walpurgisnacht celebrations of pagan origin are traditionally held on the night before May Day, including bonfires and the wrapping of a Maibaum (maypole). Young people use this opportunity to party, while the day itself is used by many families to get some fresh air. Motto: "Tanz in den Mai!" ("Dance into May!"). In the Rhineland, May 1 is also celebrated by the delivery of a maypole, a tree covered in streamers to the house of a girl the night before. The tree is typically from a love interest, though a tree wrapped only in white streamers is a sign of dislike. Females usually place roses or rice in form of a heart at the house of their beloved one. It is common to stick the heart to a window or place it in front of the doormat. On leap years, it is the responsibility of the females to place the maypole, though the males are still allowed and encouraged to do so. All the action is usually done secretly and it is an individual's choice whether to give a hint of their identity or stay anonymous. May Day was not established as a public holiday until 1933. As Labour Day, many political parties and unions host activities related to work and employment.

carl agatha, Thursday, 5 April 2012 16:33 (twelve years ago) link

"a small may day/walpurgisnacht/floralia/beltane celebration"
i don't know what any of these things are but i'm sure they're delightful and i am always happy to see my friends

first cubs game of the year starts at 1:20, vaguely tempted to go hang out in a bar during my lunch hour to watch the first hour of them sucking this year but that is probably a terrible idea

pretty much the only 90s band reunion i've cared about (which wasn't technically a reunion since they never really broke up, just stopped playing shows/recording for like 15 years) but they have only played a few shows in like NYC so i haven't had a chance to see them

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 5 April 2012 17:07 (twelve years ago) link

kinda hoping they book a club show in town while they're here so i don't have to buy festival tickets just to see them

@dvance b@se article in the trib online today but it doesn't mention me so you don't have to read it: http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/ct-ott-0406-advance-base-20120405,0,1610738.story

hey i listened to that tune you posted on fb and the melody sounds really familiar -- is it a traditional melody? i couldn't place it.

two overweight dachshunds with three eyes (La Lechera), Thursday, 5 April 2012 17:20 (twelve years ago) link

i was also wondering about pfork -- was thinking about buying tickets just for the hell of it, because why not. there's always sitting under a tree and reading and/or selling ticket and/or people watching.

two overweight dachshunds with three eyes (La Lechera), Thursday, 5 April 2012 17:23 (twelve years ago) link

afaik it is not a traditional melody but 0wen listens to/is inspired by a lot of old folk music (we've covered two carter family songs) so maybe it's a subliminal thing

i've been listening to those podcasts about the history of rome that you guys recommended and i LOVE THEM. sometimes they're a little hard to follow (because the stories are so crazy and full of people), but i think he does a good job of recapping highlights and speaking slowly enough for the brain to catch up with the ears. still, i could never ever listen to this while doing something else and expect to pass a comprehension check afterwards.

also? nice to hear ancient history being told by someone who is not ancient.

two overweight dachshunds with three eyes (La Lechera), Friday, 6 April 2012 14:01 (twelve years ago) link

Cool, I haven't actually started listening to the History of Rome podcast bcz I am drowning in a sea of podcasts, but I'll get on it. I did listen to The Rats in the Walls episode of The Horror earlier in the week, and it was AWESOME.

Can I just say that usually when I change my display name to a terrible pun, I feel vaguely embarrassed about it within a few days, but for some reason I really like "Cuba Pudding, Jr."

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Friday, 6 April 2012 15:05 (twelve years ago) link

Would be a great name for a restaurant.

Brando Ambassador (Eazy), Friday, 6 April 2012 15:06 (twelve years ago) link

Only thing on the menu: small portions of natilla.

The AV Club forgot one great 4 a.m. bar, though -- The Green Mill. It's not full of loud assholes at closing time, it's full of jazzbos. They insist on quiet while the after-hours band is playing, and they're very good at kicking people out who are slobbering drunk. So it's both late-night and stayin' classy.

cue "White Rabbit" (kenan), Friday, 6 April 2012 15:17 (twelve years ago) link

is the history of rome podcast in chronological order? ie do i have to start with episode 1?

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 6 April 2012 15:33 (twelve years ago) link

yeah

two overweight dachshunds with three eyes (La Lechera), Friday, 6 April 2012 15:33 (twelve years ago) link

Green Mill on Friday nights can be funny though, or at least it was years ago when I was there -- lots of business folks who had gone drinking after work and so were completely gone by 1 a.m., combined with the regulars.

Brando Ambassador (Eazy), Friday, 6 April 2012 15:34 (twelve years ago) link

xp - also, maybe i am overstating this, but make sure you are in the mood to pay attention. there's not a lot of fluff/discussion/rumination, things just happen and happen and happen. sometimes at the end he sums up & analyzes but not a whole lot.

two overweight dachshunds with three eyes (La Lechera), Friday, 6 April 2012 15:35 (twelve years ago) link

sounds good, i'm getting annoyed at podcasts about serious topics that still have that overly light, fluffy tone. i'll give it a shot.
