He weakens his condemnation by needlessly adding the less-than-absolute qualifier "fundamentally". Jonah showing the instincts of a poor writer non-shocker.

I also loved Lowry's "needless to say," as if Derbyshire had ruined a long history of his magazine not publishing racists

Actually he can't really write wherever he wants as um you are about to prove.

@kathrynlopez sez not my problem:

Regarding my “deafening silence”: I didn’t write it. I didn’t publish it. I’ve never heard such talk of such a talk.

Piece about right wing bloggers rallying around Derbs.

Some tried to paint the corners. Tom Maguire, for example, who has devoted the past few weeks to trying to prove that Trayvon Martin had it coming, said, "a friend of mine (AF) commented that Paul Simon fills Central Park and all is well; Diana Ross draws a crowd and there are near-riots. His thought, roughly - 'gee, go figure.'" The Diana Ross riot was in 1983, and many, many black artists have performed in New York since then without incident. (The Black-Eyed Peas played Central Park last summer and no riot ensued; perhaps Maguire, or "AF," attributes this to the calming presence of Fergie.)

It is wrong that what is a day at the office for the Left’s racialists becomes a hanging offense in Derb’s case.

Love how not one of these guys can make it a paragraph or three without the tu quoque. (And not a supporting cite in view.)

To hold or teach otherwise is to prescribe the disintegration of a pluralistic society, to undermine the aspiration of E Pluribus Unum.

Maybe you ain't heard, pal, but 'round here, our motto is IN GOD WE TRUST. None of that wishy-washy togetherness crap for us.

PWNED: http://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2012/04/the-talk-what-parents-tell-their-children-about-john-derbyshire/255578/

(5) Sometimes people will point out to you, "There are, for example, no black Fields Medal winners." Sometimes people say things like this because they want to discuss, say, the inherent inequalities in our education system that tilt the playing field against black students. Sometimes they say it because they want you to believe that black people are inherently worse at math. Both conversations are partially about race, but the latter is necessarily racist.

(6) As you go through life, you will experience an ever larger number of encounters with racists. Assuming your encounters are random -- for example, not restricted only to racist convicted murderers or to racist investment bankers -- the Law of Large Numbers will inevitably kick in. You will observe that the means -- the averages -- of many traits are not so different for racist and non-racist Americans. Some people argue that less-educated or poorer Americans are more likely to be racist. This appears to be false, and is sometimes informed by classism, which is not so different from racism.

(7) Of most importance to your personal safety are the very different means for antisocial behavior by racist people, which you will see reflected in, for instance, school disciplinary measures, political corruption, and criminal convictions.

(8) These differences are magnified by the hostility many racists feel toward people of other races. Thus, while racist-on-racist behavior is more antisocial in the average than is nonracist-on-nonracist behavior, average racist-on-minority behavior is a degree more antisocial yet.

(9) A small cohort of racists -- in my experience, around 0.5 percent -- is ferociously hostile to people of other races and will go to great lengths to inconvenience or harm them. A slightly larger cohort of racists may go along passively if the point-five percent take leadership in some event. They may do this out of a vague feeling that the minorities have it coming.

Mark Steyn is full of 'regret'

http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/295591/re-derb-mark-steyn

Raises a great point, though:

If Derb’s piece is sufficiently beyond the pale that its author must be terminated immediately, why is its publisher — our old friend Taki — proudly listed on the NR masthead?

Meantime, Mr. Lowry is something or other:

http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/295592/derb-rich-lowry

I shut off the comments on my posts over the weekend because there was no one to moderate them (so most comments would have stacked up unposted). Have at it, if you haven’t already somewhere else on NRO.

Boy that Steyn piece really gives back:

in an age when shrieking “That’s totally racist!” is totally gay, (Derbyshire) at least has the rare satisfaction of having earned his colors

Ned Raggett, Monday, 9 April 2012 19:41 (twelve years ago) link

I was right about the comments on Lowry's bit. Thus:

Rich, as I indicated here and here, I think you overreacted. The fact that Derb jumped across the line he "has long danced around" may (or may not) be due to drugs and illness.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 9 April 2012 19:54 (twelve years ago) link

re: the link provided by Ned to Andy McCarthy's Corner post.

I think he may be doing a bit of back-covering here. Derbyshire has in the past engaged in email correspondence with self-described racist Lawrence Auster which Derb then permitted to be published at the racist site Auster runs, View from the Right. Sample headline from site: MOB OF BLACK SAVAGES IN BROOKLYN BEATS THREE WHITE MEN WITH BATS WHEN THEY TRY TO RESCUE GIRL http://www.amnation.com/vfr/archives/011160.html

Apparently it has so-far escaped general notice, that Andy McCarthy has been doing precisely the same for the past 5 years, although admittedly he has never broached race as far as I'm aware. He has merely allowed correspondence, concerning Islam and the threat it poses, between himself and the open racist running a racist site, to be posted on said racist site.

Steyn unleashed. Would hate to stand against him.

I am pretty disgusted with NR firing Derbyshire over this. Derb’s article was on Taki’s time, not yours. He is an amazing intellectual (undergoing chemotherapy, no less), and you are playing the cheap games of the left by simply smearing him as a racist rather than engaging his arguments. Have you read the article to which he was responding in kind (External Link )? Derb is not a racist, he is the antidote to this kind of mindless brain-washing to which everyone – everyone – on the left subscribes. John Derbyshire stands athwart history yelling stop. NR is losing its compass.
