I believe on the Stannis et Melisandre question, that he dreams a sort of murky, magical, succubus-like encounter, and she takes that from him without his full consent. It IS mentioned often that she's taking the Stannis' wife's place at his side, but that's like a transfer of power & authority, not a sign of a sexual liaison.

i seem to remember them being quite clear that melisandre was getting it on with stannis. in one of the later books someone says that she warms his bed or something like that, which kinda makes it clear what they're doing.

Hm I don't remember that being specifically told to us by a reliable narrator? If another character says it, it's just as likely to be their unreliable PoV.

is there a spoilery thread?

diamonddave85, Monday, 9 April 2012 16:51 (twelve years ago) link

the book threads are spoilery, though if you haven't read all 5 books i would avoid them

ciderpress, Monday, 9 April 2012 17:06 (twelve years ago) link

anyone watched ep2? more like game of porn

the brothel keyhole-blowjob --> wiping-off-the-corner-of-the-mouth --> deep kiss with new client scene was way over the top

dmr, Monday, 9 April 2012 18:17 (twelve years ago) link

^ and that sort of thing doesn't usually bother me that much. I mean, come on, the wiping the mouth this was just gross.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 9 April 2012 18:19 (twelve years ago) link

tbh until just now I thought I had read too much into that bit because I didn't think they would have actually shown that. Gah.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 9 April 2012 18:20 (twelve years ago) link

yeah it took me a minute to register that they were really going there

dmr, Monday, 9 April 2012 18:29 (twelve years ago) link

even some of the dialogue like what that prisoner said to arya about putting a stick up her anus or whatev, it's a bit gleefully gross.

I guess I'm too desensitised to really find that ott. Genuine lolz at the chain of people spying on other people - as well as that subtext of the ways in which Littlefinger and others use spying/voyeurism etc.

Thinking back this was pretty strong thematically, but I didn't really appreciate that so much while watching it due to jumping from story to story.

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Monday, 9 April 2012 18:49 (twelve years ago) link

the thing about the wiping of her mouth that made it gross to me was that it was like identifying her as "look, she even needs a man to wipe her mouth for her, she is literally nothing more than a tool for fucking"

THAT is otm.

most of the other fuck scenes in the episode at least involved a major character or had some plot purpose, I think that's one reason it seemed gratuitous

dmr, Monday, 9 April 2012 18:53 (twelve years ago) link

but that's the point, surely. that's the set-up for Littlefinger's little speech to Roz.

the whole episode was really about perceptions/treatment of women

felt like a recurring theme in the ep to me but wdik

The first part (re: dream succubus) is my impression as well, though I do think believe they eventually start doing it, like, carnally.

Aw cmon, the Davos scene was soooo much yay.

Davos/Saan scene was worth the whole ep in my opinion

'he cuts off your fingers - and you fall in love with him!'

Brakhage, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 01:13 (twelve years ago) link

^^

Didn't care for the sullen way the actress played Yara/Asha, who in my mind was much more boisterous.

Où sont le Lord Custos d'antan? (Leee), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 01:15 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah now I've read all the books I really notice the reductions they had to pull to get the story to pull together on TV. There's going to be so much that just doesn't make it in.

Brakhage, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 01:16 (twelve years ago) link

by the way do we have a GoT TV thread for people who have read the books?

Brakhage, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 01:19 (twelve years ago) link

I don't think so. You should start it.

Où sont le Lord Custos d'antan? (Leee), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 01:23 (twelve years ago) link

yeah I just caught myself from blowing some plot threads and was wondering, cheers

Brakhage, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 01:25 (twelve years ago) link

though thinking about it it would be about 100 comments of 'I can't believe they cut that, what the hell was wrong with them'

Brakhage, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 01:27 (twelve years ago) link

That's the normal internet reaction, but if there's anything about us ilxors, we are abnormal.

Où sont le Lord Custos d'antan? (Leee), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 01:28 (twelve years ago) link

I just don't want to spoil somebody's day with something like 'how the hell are they going to shoot X'.

Anyway, with regard to ep, the porn aspects didn't throw me at the time, but thinking about it now I can see they're really trying to shoehorn more and more of these in. But that's kind of an HBO house style thing at this point, isn't it? I kind of expect every scene to begin or end that way.

Tyrion/Slynt scene was most excellent as well. Dinklage was cracking me up.

Brakhage, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 01:31 (twelve years ago) link

as for whether they really 'did it' in the books, grrm is never shy about ppl doing anything, so i can't imagine he'd be coy about this.

except he was coy about loras and renly fuckin

i don't even remember him being coy about it tbh (i don't remember any of the renly stuff from the books really)

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 02:00 (twelve years ago) link

I don't think I ever twigged to it until the TV show!!! Which is pretty dim of me maybe but it WAS very coy.

how did I get here? why am I in the whiskey aisle? this is all so (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 02:09 (twelve years ago) link

maybe it wasnt even there is what im saying

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 02:10 (twelve years ago) link

neither renly nor loras had as much narrative attention on them as stannis, iirc, it would be really weird if stannis & melisandre were supposed to be boning down in the books

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 02:11 (twelve years ago) link

doesnt grrm make a real point of saying that stannis doesnt even like bone-downing?

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 02:12 (twelve years ago) link

i didnt get renly & loras until the show started having them givin each other mondo blowies, but george says it was there all along, and so when the show has stannis & melly doin it i just assume the same thing

these pretzels are makeing me horney (Hungry4Ass), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 02:14 (twelve years ago) link

in retrospect, there were a bunch of good scenes in this, but I really found it hard to care about them while I was watching
