that new redheaded witch lady is super hot I appreciated hbo taking the time to show me her titties, and I feel the gratuitous nudity is totally in keeping w/the overall trashy vibes of the show in general

I would like to respectfully decline my complimentary anal titties

Well, we're talking about an HBO-ified Mad Men, right? The boobs would be chain-smoking, too.

ENOUGH, OKAY? Jesus. I know you're all joking but enough of clicking on this thread to see these words, please?

how did I get here? why am I in the whiskey aisle? this is all so (Laurel), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 16:27 (twelve years ago) link

It's not making it LESS gross that lots of people want to keep returning to the scenes where women are treated the most dismissively/cruelly and making jokes about their sexualized, dehumanized bodies.

liberal.net/handwringing

lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 16:31 (twelve years ago) link

eh, y'know sometimes liberal handwringing is a proper response when you're dealing with this stuff; I generallly agree with this:

Sometimes you still enjoy a movie or book because you read a certain, potentially problematic scene in a certain way – but others read it entirely differently, and found it more problematic. For example, consider the scene in Game of Thrones where Drogo rapes Dany (which he does not do in the books). One of my friends feels that it was portrayed like rape fetish porn, sexualising the act and Dany’s pain. But I feel that the scene focuses on Dany’s pain and tears in a manner that is not fetishising them (though even so the narrative is still totally fucked up because Dany and her rapist then go on to have a good, sexyfuntimes relationship…uh, no, HBO). I don’t agree with my friend’s interpretation but I recognise it as a totally valid reading of the scene.

Also, as a fan of problematic media, you need to respect the fact that others may be so upset or angered by media you love that they don’t want to engage with it at all. In fact, one of my best friends won’t watch HBO’s Game of Thrones because of the racism and misogyny. That’s a completely legitimate and valid response to that tv show, and me trying to convince her to give it another shot would be disrespectful and hurtful. If you badger others to see what you see in something when they are telling you it’s not enjoyable for them, you’re being an entitled jerk. You’re showing yourself to be willing to hurt a real person over a television show. That really is a sign you’re taking things too seriously.

haven't read that part in the book dunno where she's going with that
do they play it up as consensual in print?

I always connected that relationship to the one in raise the red lantern in my head, dunno why that made the medicine go down easier, but it did

boy, was that Dan Fielding hungry for some cake! (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 16:36 (twelve years ago) link

its semi-consensual in the books and very gross, ib elieve weve gone over this before

max, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 16:36 (twelve years ago) link

Mordy, maybe I made that up/transplanted it from another book??? I'm not finding references to it online now and I haven't read Bk 1 in a long time, but I thought that at some point Drogo had to um well that it had to be in public under the stars, in the manner of the horses that are the Dothraki lifesblood. It DID happen, didn't it??

in the books, during the scene where danaerys introduces drogo to non-doggystyle sex, she drags him out into the middle of the camp. its a power display on the part of danaerys, and not rape (unless were talking a complicated definition of rape)

the wedding night sex, in the books, isnt rape either--he like... strokes her? all over? and then (barf) "slips a finger inside her" or something, and she is hrm "very wet" or something

okay, i don't think he's totally wrong so much as i think he has a 'difficult' polyamorous relationship and has tried cosplay

remember when u read that passage that danaerys is 14 in the books

max, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 16:43 (twelve years ago) link

honestly, the rape scene in season 1 was a real bad move and almost classically hbo in sense that the network seems determined to sell the most controversial product ever. that daenery's chapter above i thought was actually sort of sweet - albeit weirdly graphic - and made me understand how tumultuous his *SPOILERS* death ultimately was

whereas the show depicted the whole relationship like some sort of dragon/horse stockholm syndrome

tales from endoscopic oceans (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 16:45 (twelve years ago) link

yeah kelpolaris otm, I really did not like the choices they made wtih Danaerys in the show either, especially in that scene. It was a weird choice to make, and def the wrong one.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 16:49 (twelve years ago) link

plus, while i don't think martin's really plays in these sort of things, the whole idea of the two men in daenery's life (visery's was his name? "the beggar king" + khal drogo) interfacing with in two entirely different ways kinda gave suggestion that all she ever needed was not to be slapped, twisted, and groped but caressed and gently touched (i'm going "ew" as i write this in a public computer lab) and she was content with her life (as seen by her immediate embrace of the horse-clan-dude's lifestyle after that chapter).

like, she's displayed as a very simple character with admittedly not a lot of thought going on with her and that we are able to infer so much of her psychological state of being (sorry) and where she comes from/who she ultimately is/how she was raised just from these scenes i thought largely defined her. in the show she's raped and then suddenly loves drogo, and the result is that any sort of identification i had with her character is lost b/c i have no idea who the fuck could possibly just reverse mentalities like that w/ so little incentive

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 16:57 (twelve years ago) link

she just needed to be 'gently caressed', eh

thomp, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 16:58 (twelve years ago) link

in other words: she's sort of like an abused dog. she can't talk and if she couldn't doesn't really have an awful lot to say. drogo is her new owner and treats her far differently and this ultimately wins her over.

i haven't read the sequels yet but hoping that maybe these whole ideas come into play somehow, as they haven't thus far and daenery's is given the weird characteristic of being "the sympathetic queen" which - maybe isn't entirely *unlike* herself, but that she alloted visery's to abuse her for so long and in such a way that maybe she grew somewhat immune to it and the witness of it. i'm not making a lot of sense, but what i'm saying is that i can connect the dots in the book whereas hbo severed what i thought a pretty essential character trademark in the name of making people gasp on their couches

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:02 (twelve years ago) link

they really did away with quite a bit of her early character development, where we see her choosing to shrug off the old Danaerys, like the freedom she experiences horseriding informs her newfound confidence in her relationship with Drogo

I really enjoy her character in the books, and i agree she's definitely been done a disservice in the writing of the tv series, at least early on. She seems to inhabit the strength now, but yeah where it comes from doesn't make sense without a lot of those early moments that they excised or changed.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:04 (twelve years ago) link

VG very much otm, I was trying to explain to my wife the other night that the show isn't really doing her storyline justice so far.

are there viewer ratings for season 2 published? kinda curious if people are still watching this considering sean bean is forever absent

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:07 (twelve years ago) link

tbh it sounds like it is doing a pretty good job of underlining and reinforcing what was already implausible and unpleasant about it

thomp, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:08 (twelve years ago) link

kel: people are still watching, and it retained pretty much all its viewers from the s2 premiere.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:11 (twelve years ago) link

I don't mind the actress, she seems to have a lot of the characteristics of Dany, and she's handled the adversity storylines really well I think.

it's just a downer when there's a really good female character that gets the shaft because, idk, someone decided she's too pretty to be strong? who knows. I'm not really sure why the choice was made, but it's annoying.

That being said, I enjoy the show for the most part. And as long as they don't fuck with Arya's storyline we'll be cool.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:12 (twelve years ago) link

I think the biggest problem is that the majority of Dany's growth occurs in interior monologue, which is difficult to express in film.

God, Music and Romeo and Juliet (DJP), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:22 (twelve years ago) link

They should make it like Herman's Head

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:22 (twelve years ago) link

idk she's the leader of her own crew now and has dragons but the actress just doesn't embody any gravitas particularly, occasionally she'll yell BLOOD OF MY BLOOD or w/e but it's not that convincing, maybe this is supposed to be some transitional growin into her role period, or maybe the wiring is bad or w/e but that thread seems a lil vague atm

lag∞n, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 17:25 (twelve years ago) link
