daniel 'danny' brière and claude giroux both have seven goals in seven playoff games

all these series look great except maybe rangers-caps, in which first goal wins

i've got a hockey question. i'm a total hockey newb (i watch a playoff game every year or so - generally when flyers are in them) but this year i've really been enjoying it - i think partially bc exciting flyer team and that hbo hockey show and the playoffs have been kinda riveting to me. so apologies for barging in. i was just wondering about shots on goal and saves. obv a team that takes a lot of shots is going to actually score more often than a team that takes less. when a team has a lot of shots on goal, but fewer points than you would expect, what would that generally indicate? a team that has a hard time closing? or that they were playing a particularly better goalie?

Mordy, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:18 (eleven years ago) link

fewer points goals

could be a really good goalie, but there are shots and shots. flipping a puck on goal from center ice is not as dangerous as a point-blank shot from the slot. that sort of stuff evens out over the long term -- the fact that quick and lundqvist have awesome save percentages isn't an illusion -- but in a single game might not mean much.

you can see the difference in the shot percentages of forwards and defensemen -- a top forward will score on maybe 15% of his shots while a top defenseman is maybe half that.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:27 (eleven years ago) link

thx, that makes sense. btw, i love in this NJ/PHI game that when flyers have had power plays they've been executing these really tight passing formations. kinda reminds me of a pass-heavy basketball team.

Mordy, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:37 (eleven years ago) link

flyers are playing really well and are an appealing team, which is hard for me as a pittsburgh fan. but yeah if you want to get into hockey this is a v. good time to do it.

it sucks to be away from North America during the playoffs

Hockey has been painful to watch this season so I'd glad switch places right now.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Monday, 7 May 2012 21:05 (eleven years ago) link

yeah it's so painful when your team sets a record* for consecutive home wins and makes the playoffs for the 21st straight year

i rmde at u

mookieproof, Monday, 7 May 2012 23:49 (eleven years ago) link

It's hard to explain, but it hasn't been a fun or enjoyable season for me. There's been seasons I've had a lot more fun with where the wings have done much worse.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 00:52 (eleven years ago) link

imo it's the big home winning streak and looking pretty damn good throughout the first like 2/3 of the season before injuries etc brought it all down and the loss to nashville was a bit of an inevitability

Steve Youngblood (dan m), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 02:50 (eleven years ago) link

i was not expecting these results

and while bless said teams for doing what needed to be done, i'd like a *little* bit of offense at least

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:59 (eleven years ago) link

the WCF makes me nauseous just thinking about it. Phoenix? Really? Can't even be up against, like, the red wings or some BS? It's bad enough the ducks have a cup

Grimy Little Pimp (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 07:21 (eleven years ago) link

Hoping now for a Tortorella vs Sutter final rematch.

sofatruck, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 12:52 (eleven years ago) link

Definitely not hoping for that on my end. Goddam I love eliminating the Flyers ESPECIALLY IN PHILLY. If we eliminate the Rangers too, I dont even care if we win the Cup. This would be the perfect season.

GM disappointed by Ilya Bryzgalov

"His job is to stop pucks and help us win games," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. "It's not Comedy Central."

The man known around these parts as "Bryz" still has eight more years left to figure it all out.

mookieproof, Friday, 11 May 2012 01:29 (eleven years ago) link

"Most of Eastern Pennsylvania dissapointed by Paul Holmgren"

"His job is to find a goaltender, which we have not had since Ron Hextall", Eastern Pennslyvania said. "It's not Comedy Central".

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Friday, 11 May 2012 13:14 (eleven years ago) link

The man known as a complete idiot in these parts probably doesnt have much more time to figure it out.

Holmgren making a complete fool of himself in that interview. Love it, as a Devils fan. Keep it up Flyers.
