can i just nnnnnnnnnghgh at this:
I feel like Martin has a lot more to say about politics, gender, etc. than Tolkien did. It's pretty interesting even if the strokes are broad

also, it seems like structurally any high-fantasy tv entertainment focused on medieval-england analogues is going to resort to, er, 'othering' non-white ppl. and no one is going to put the hbo boob money behind a high-fantasy tv entertainment which isn't focused on white people. -- it's a structural thing, rather than a failure of the writers. (the skeezy dependance on the demographics of boobs is both, i suppose.)
true of the books too to some extent i guess. (tho le guin did have a hugely popular juvenile fantasy series, from decades back, in which the main cast were not white: except when the sci fi channel adapted it, suddenly they were. now that was egregious.)

Summer Islanders are generally portrayed as rather civilised in the books.

rich guy in qarth (xaro xhoan daxos) hardly strikes me as a caricatured "savage"
right, but he does go to great pains in the show to describe overcoming his beginnings to get rich. anyway, i was just disappointed because that was not how i read the Summer Isles inhabitants in the book at all.

^ otm. the show has not insignificant racial problems; that doesn't rate (to me) as one of them.

Woha Lady in Red delivering that weirdo thing. It didn't seem like fun. Otherwise, I LOVE this show so much. I am not much into "fantasy" but this is so mad awesome. Probably cause it feels medieval to me

he mentioned that he wasn't born to wealth & power. didn't strike me as great pains, or an indication that he arose from savagery, but today hasn't been my day for figuring shit out so [< heads up, aero]

why does the dog serve joffrey? he seems a relatively good dude and joffrey is obv a little shit.
daenarys' bad acting was really on display in this ep.

i don't think its ever said why but i may not remember correctly. something like cleganes are vassals of the lannisters and the hound is one extremely loyal dude?

― polyphonic, Monday, 7 May 2012 17:22 (eleven years ago) link
the lack of characterization for the hound has been a disappointment so far. he gets some pretty good scenes in the books. thank god we have plenty of scenes of the timeless created-for-the-show character of Roz The Prostitute instead

her exchange with whatshisname on the steps was just awful
I've only read the first book, but are we supposed to be totally impressed with the ridiculous things she says? clearly many other characters in the world see her as a young girl with delusions of grandeur. maybe she's a bad actress, but it seems like a limitation of the role and the dialogue too. the character seems to be taking a "fake it until you make it" approach to power.
― ryan, Monday, 7 May 2012 18:28 (eleven years ago) link
the delivery of that dialogue is the problemshe's a definite weak spot in the casting
― (Name Withheld to Avoid Hassle) (forksclovetofu), Monday, 7 May 2012 18:30 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah she's not handling this stuff particularly well. It's also because her character is somewhat delusional and everyone else has her pretty sussed out.
― Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Monday, 7 May 2012 18:31 (eleven years ago) link
right i think it'd be laughable if people fell to their knees at one of her foot stamping entitled monologues, but they basically shrug it off. i can def see it being more of a problem down the line (assuming she DOES acquire power).
― ryan, Monday, 7 May 2012 18:34 (eleven years ago) link
She doesn't realise her father is known as The Mad King, does she?
― Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Monday, 7 May 2012 18:36 (eleven years ago) link
No, she does not. Viserys filled her head with nonsense about their father being beloved.
― Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Monday, 7 May 2012 18:37 (eleven years ago) link
She is probably 14 at this point in the book, so her petulance makes a lot more sense to me in that light.
― polyphonic, Monday, 7 May 2012 18:41 (eleven years ago) link
theon's sacking of winterfell + beheading rodrick was maybe the most disturbing scene for me so far, maybe because I've started reading the books, so I can see more of the psychological angles and have just spent more hours with the characters. But jeez that was awful.

thanks to your reply, i'm imagining the hound going "Ve vant ze money Lebowski". Would make those nihilists so much scarier.

― Pot Leeedom (Leee), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 04:38 (eleven years ago) link
i most certainly did. i kind of liked her screaming " i want you to kill him NOW!", as it made her sound like the little kid she is, which you sometimes tend to forget considering everything she does.
― Jibe, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 04:51 (eleven years ago) link
otm, i was also disappointed by the mechanical and rather ridiculous presentation of arya's second assassination. a big disappointment after last week's (great) episode, imo.

Yes! Very sitcomy vibe, esp. the wry way Jaqen seemed to be teasing her.
Otherwise agree on overall quality of this episode, which was also written by the same writer who did "Garden of Bones" (the other majorly dud episode this season).
