They played Foxy Lady in 1992??

"Happy the Man" Paris, 1984
"Away (Cut)" London Town and Country, 1991 (actually all the early Wish songs on this are worth it)
"Letter to Elise" MTV Unplugged, 1991

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 07:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Can do most of the above, there's probably a better quality 'Happy The Man' from Washington 84, tracklist for the first CD coming soon (it's a triple!)

mzui (mzui), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 07:35 (nineteen years ago) link

A Strange Day never sounded better. I listened to Pornography three times right through before I even thought about the extras disk.

I didn't think it was possible for me to love this album more, but I do.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 13:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Mzui, you are a glorious man. :-)

Anyone want to design a cover?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 13:45 (nineteen years ago) link

It should be a cheap photocopy a la "Concert"

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:02 (nineteen years ago) link

:-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:03 (nineteen years ago) link

But that's a good thing! Anyway, I'm impatient to see the tracklist of this and shall soon start working on my Forever live compilation...

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:08 (nineteen years ago) link

In that case shall I bother putting in any versions of Forever, I had intended to include at least one, a freakout version with Hartley's keyboards!

mzui (mzui), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Properly printed full colour artwork will be included.
This is going to take a little while to collate folks so be patient, but the first CD tracklist should be along in a day or two.

mzui (mzui), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:19 (nineteen years ago) link

No Curiosity is complete without a version of Forever! (plus who knows when I'll get around doing this...)

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I still want the Curiosity version of "Forever" on an official CD release.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:24 (nineteen years ago) link

It was recorded in 1984 = look for it as a bonus with either The Top or Concert

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:28 (nineteen years ago) link

And what about 'Ariel'?

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Didn't they do "A Japanese Dream" on The Kissing Tour? I need a live version of that.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:43 (nineteen years ago) link

is the "studio version" of forever on the bootleg Dr. Robert's Surgery really a studio version? it sounds terrible!

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Heheh, I had that bootleg for a while. Ripped the few tracks I needed from it and sent it on.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay I'll keep the version of Forever in there, thanks.

*Didn't they do "A Japanese Dream" on The Kissing Tour? I need a live version of that.*

There's a good version of A Japanese Dream from a BBC broadcast in Birmingham 87. What other Kiss Me tracks are we interested in?

At the moment I'm digging out 84/Top-era stuff, got lovely versions of The Wailing Wall, The Empty World and Caterpillar lined up, oh and Secrets!

Also I found an early version of Charlotte Sometimes too that I'd totally forgotten about, the second time played live according to Bob.

Please keep the suggestions coming, they are really helpful.

No idea about Ariel, will check up if they played it ever.

mzui (mzui), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 18:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Nope, only the Kid Jensen session version, I could include that.

mzui (mzui), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:04 (nineteen years ago) link

We need to keep an eye out for tracks that they rarely ever play like "The 13th" and "The Snakepit".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Seconding Dan there. Hearing what they do live with the rare ones is always a treat.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Got a couple of Snakepits, also have a version of The 13th (it was only played 5 times) quality is not amazing as it's an audience recording, but it's quite listenable, with a bit of tweaking it should be okay.

mzui (mzui), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Was "The 13th" the most immediately ignored-by-the-band lead single from an album ever?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 19:18 (nineteen years ago) link

When in Hell are they going to release all those BBC Sessions anyway?
Never. They are holding them back to spite you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 May 2005 00:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Looks like the "Japanese Whispers" songs will all be part of the "The Top" reissue. Unless they reissue "Japanese Whispers" itself, but I doubt that.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 5 May 2005 00:25 (nineteen years ago) link

As Ned mentioned above:

Good lord, so the next set of rereleases will cover the Glove, Japanese Whispers stuffage in some form and The Top. OH HOW SAD AND HORRIBLE.

Also, Japanese Whispers is right around the time when The Cure started doing more 12" remixes (even though there is an extended version of "Primary" that, AFAIR, isn't on the Faith reissue), so I assume those remixes will populate that reissue. Also, when was Concert recorded and released? Maybe, it might be a two-fer?

Who knows?

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 5 May 2005 00:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Concert was recorded/released following The Top, and is notable because it captures the lineup in transition towards (but not yet near) Thee Classic Smith/Gallup/Thompson/Williams/Tolhurst songwriting credit era of yore. A two-fer is entirely possible -- and indeed, I muttered my wish on that above. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 May 2005 00:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm excited about the Japanese Whispers, Blue Sunshine, and The Top reissues... but I have to admit.. I wish I cold fast forward time and get to the Head On The Door, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, and Disintegration reissues.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 5 May 2005 00:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually, if we want to include remixes *and* live tracks, the latter two might have to be THREE disc reissues... DARN!

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 5 May 2005 00:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Virtue is a patience. Besides, sometimes I secretly think The Top is, if not the best album Robert ever did, in ways the most bizarrely adventurous -- almost completely schizophrenic sonically, a solo album in all but name, at once extremely dreamy and very aggressive. Any album with "Shake Dog Shake," "Wailing Wall," "Give Me It," "Dressing Up," and the title track on it -- *and* had "The Caterpillar" as a lead single! -- is at once wonderful and completely off balance. Sure, Kiss Me in ways parallels the same sprawling sense and then some, but in a way that's more band-centered as opposed to run amuck in the studio.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 May 2005 00:49 (nineteen years ago) link

I really love The Top as well. There are a ton of demos for that LP--I hope he does Concert separately--perhaps the full concert even!

If I could add some suggestions for the Curiosity Mark II disc(s):

The 'Fuck Robert Palmer! Fuck rock 'n' roll!' version of A Forest 07/05/1981 Werchter

The 'Tienanmen Sq.' version of Faith 06/04/1989 Rome

Birdmad Girl encore 05/30/1984 s'Hertogenbosch

Any 'Do You Wanna Touch' version from 1985

I also second Harold and Joe '91, Lament (Bath)'83 and the T&C versions of Wish songs--especially The Big Hand.

Someone was asking about a studio version of Forever--I think there is an odd Peel session of that. And Ariel I always thought was more of a Robert Smith solo outing so I don't believe it was ever done live.

Nicholas, Thursday, 5 May 2005 01:18 (nineteen years ago) link

The 'Fuck Robert Palmer! Fuck rock 'n' roll!' version of A Forest 07/05/1981 Werchter

Yep.

The 'Tienanmen Sq.' version of Faith 06/04/1989 Rome

Don't have it I'm afraid, if someone wants to send me a lossless version I'll include it, I always thought it was a bit embarrasing to be honest!

Birdmad Girl encore 05/30/1984 s'Hertogenbosch

Yep.

Any 'Do You Wanna Touch' version from 1985

I've got one from 81, I'll A/B it against any 85 versions I have.

I also second Harold and Joe '91, Lament (Bath)'83 and the T&C versions of Wish songs--especially The Big Hand.

Great, thanks!

mzui (mzui), Thursday, 5 May 2005 04:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Also I found an early version of Charlotte Sometimes too that I'd totally forgotten about, the second time played live according to Bob.

if this is the one I think it might be, I could possibly get a very very good quality copy sorted

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 5 May 2005 15:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Jeez--sorry I don't have a lossless version of The 'Tienanmen Sq.' Faith... Yeah, it is kind of embarrassing and over the top but I kind of like that--I want to squirm!

Nicholas, Thursday, 5 May 2005 15:17 (nineteen years ago) link

donut as soon as you're done compiling the PRince 12" stuff, your next project is the Cure 12" project.

Kit, It's from a gig at The Capitol Theatre Sydney in 81.

mzui (mzui), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:12 (nineteen years ago) link

The Glove reissue has nothing to do with this campaign. Japanese Whispers, having already been covered with Greatest Hits and Join The Dots will not be in the next batch. The next batch, out in September, will be comprised of The Head On The Door, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, and Disintegration. You heard it here first.

sasssafrass, Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:57 (nineteen years ago) link

And The Top. Four in the next batch.

sassafrass, Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Shucky darn. But, Concert?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 May 2005 21:59 (nineteen years ago) link

hahaha, maybe they're watching this thread for ideas before re-releasing concert.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:08 (nineteen years ago) link

You scared me for a minute there sassafrass! I thought The Top would again be relegated to "black sheep of Cure albums" status. That's the one I want most to hear remastered and also the one which I think will have the best rarities.

Seb (Seb), Thursday, 5 May 2005 22:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Kind of remember reading a Robert Smith interview once where he said The Top had been mastered at the wrong speed (I think he meant "pressed", but "mastered" was the word he used). Wonder if that'll be corrected. Either way, I love it as it stands and can't wait for the reissue, along with Blue Sunshine.
How many Glove rarities have popped up on bootlegs?

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Whatever became of the female vocalist for The Glove?

totally OTM

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Friday, 6 May 2005 12:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Thirded indeed. I often think this is actually my favorite Cure album.

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Friday, 6 May 2005 12:19 (nineteen years ago) link

There was a good long while where The Top was my favorite Cure album, mostly because it's completely awesome but partially because I was trying to avoid the Pornography/Disintegration stereotype. Eventually "Siamese Twins" won me over but MAN The Top is awesome.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 6 May 2005 12:35 (nineteen years ago) link

The Top is the first Cure album I ever owned and so still ranks as my favorite. I was always surprised to see that it was generally thought of as one of their lesser albums (by critics, or something)

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 6 May 2005 12:48 (nineteen years ago) link

It's also astoundingly out of place for 1984 if you think about stereotypes of what music was supposed to be like in a time and place.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 May 2005 13:13 (nineteen years ago) link

I was always surprised to see that it was generally thought of as one of their lesser albums (by critics, or something)

because critics are often oh! so lazy...that album makes for a twisted, convoluted listening and this is not always very appreciated.
i just would like more of that mad vibe on cure most recent albums (though "the 13th" was as good as the best Top's bits).

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Friday, 6 May 2005 13:19 (nineteen years ago) link

"The 13th" is SOOOOOOOOOOOO underrated! That song is bloody-minded genius; every misstep on Wild Mood Swings is redeemed by it.
