Roy never fails to strike the wrong note. I've been stanning bigtime for Carroll, but now I'm not sure.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 13:40 (eleven years ago) link

england manager talking to a club manager about anything other than a player's fitness should be a sackable offence imo

r|t|c, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 13:47 (eleven years ago) link

bitter scot always a reliable source of advice for the england manager, i wonder did he call roy keane as well

pet tommy & the barkhaters (darraghmac), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 13:49 (eleven years ago) link

cos kenny was likely to say - "you know what roy i spent £35m on the fucker and not a day not an hour not a minute not a second has gone by since when i've not regretted it and wept bitter tears at my folly. He's no good Roy, he's...just..no..good" (sound of sobbing down the line)

and yet still no call up for kit deal

r|t|c, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 14:01 (eleven years ago) link

I was wrong, Roy has failed to dampen down expectations. For some people I suspect such a thing is impossible

Riaz Hussain on Twitter: "There's enough in the selected squad to reach final of Euro 2012.Lets not forget we have 4 or 5 world class players included"

Roy never fails to strike the wrong note

yeah exactly, knew his inability to control his gob would cause him nightmares in this role.

Ronan I'm sure you'kk be pleased to know that the Bundesliga has not one but two Benders - Lars Bender AND Sven Bender.

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 17:11 (eleven years ago) link

this pick is stupid, why roy why

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 17:11 (eleven years ago) link

It is certainly easy to pick holes in his Euro 2012 squad and there were times when Hodgson strayed dangerously close to perplexing his audience. At one point he cited the way Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had troubled Andrea Pirlo in Arsenal's Champions League tie against Milan (Pirlo had left the club the previous summer). Later, the manager explained he had called off next week's training camp in Málaga partly because Manchester City's players had been celebrating a league triumph and "would find it hard to be on a plane on Monday". You looked at him to see if it was a joke and it quickly became apparent it wasn't.

mizzell, Thursday, 17 May 2012 20:01 (eleven years ago) link

The simple truth is there is an absence of real quality in abundance, something that was not lost on Hodgson. "You don't necessarily have to be the best team to win a tournament," he said. "You can get by with good team spirit, and a bit of luck at the right times."

mizzell, Thursday, 17 May 2012 20:01 (eleven years ago) link

These were revealing moments by the side of Manchester City's pitch, if only for the frequency with which Hodgson halted play to pass on instructions. "Very hands-on," James Milner observed afterwards. Vocal, too. "You don't have to use short passes," the new England manager could be heard shouting at one point. "Not if you want to use your big man up front." Carroll put the ball past Joe Hart and Hodgson nodded his head appreciatively. "Well done, son."

r|t|c, Friday, 25 May 2012 09:33 (eleven years ago) link

That strike puts Carroll into double figures for the third consecutive season.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 25 May 2012 09:43 (eleven years ago) link

xp or as Daniel Agger knows, "launch it!"

pandemic, Friday, 25 May 2012 09:59 (eleven years ago) link

Anticipating a lot of "Terry... forward to Gerrard... looking for Carroll... chance for (England's opposition) to come forward now..." in commentary.

The two times it results in England goals will justify something.

Dude who made his League Two debut in November ahead of Fraser Forster (70 cleans sheets in three seasons with Norwich then Celtic) pretty much shows no-one playing in Scotland will ever get a chance.

Isn't this how Sly Stallone got his big chance in Escape to Victory? That was in Ukraine too iirc.

"He speaks my language," said the former Wimbledon manager [Egil Olsen] of his opposite number. "In my opinion, they should go more direct. I am a more direct manager but, even here, people don't agree with me. I guess in Norway I belong to a little group [of one], and in England people don't like the direct approach and such strict defensive organisation."

r|t|c, Saturday, 26 May 2012 10:01 (eleven years ago) link

How on earth did he manage to fail at Wimbledon?

and lawrie mcmenemy and phil neal... fucking hell not a single clue

r|t|c, Saturday, 26 May 2012 10:58 (eleven years ago) link

Barnes was pretty poor as i recall, disappeared for long stretches of the game. Also England fans.

Cyders from Mars (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 26 May 2012 11:08 (eleven years ago) link

<3 Graham Taylor for that film, and I haven't even seen it yet. I hope someone's working on Roy for one.

Barnes was always unpopular, was he not? He could never live up to that first goal.

Bergkamp's goal at 8:45 here is sublime. Such a Bergkamp goal.

ian wright cutting his spaghetti up with a knife and fork is probably the most painful thing in the film so far tbh

"fucking hell... you talk until you're fucking blue in the face don't ya" - Taylor brilliantly summing up the helplessness of a manager once the players cross the line

i haven't watched it since it was first broadcast, i shd definitely revisit it with the benefit of hindsight

Cyders from Mars (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 26 May 2012 11:42 (eleven years ago) link

Phil Neal spends the whole time agreeing with/repeating anything anyone says - I think he must have been the inspiration for this sketch

pure, beautiful, inventive (onimo), Saturday, 26 May 2012 11:44 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i remember the Phil Neal thing, it just seems like coaches' natural role, i remember laughing at Don Howe writing his postcards from the bench under Greenwood

Shall we make this our 'ILF comes together to watch' #2?

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 26 May 2012 11:57 (eleven years ago) link

interesting when he's doing the visit with the prison inmates and even then they're talking about how kids playing on full size pitches is bad for development same as now 18 years on

r|t|c, Saturday, 26 May 2012 12:02 (eleven years ago) link

There's a great scene where he's discussing something with Phil Neal, who is just violently agreeing with everything he says, and they look towards McMenemy for his opinion and he's moved as far away from them as he can on the bench and is writing (presumably his resignation letter) on a scrap of paper.

I must be old, I recognise nobody in ITV2 idents (aldo), Saturday, 26 May 2012 12:17 (eleven years ago) link
