It is certainly easy to pick holes in his Euro 2012 squad and there were times when Hodgson strayed dangerously close to perplexing his audience. At one point he cited the way Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had troubled Andrea Pirlo in Arsenal's Champions League tie against Milan (Pirlo had left the club the previous summer). Later, the manager explained he had called off next week's training camp in Málaga partly because Manchester City's players had been celebrating a league triumph and "would find it hard to be on a plane on Monday". You looked at him to see if it was a joke and it quickly became apparent it wasn't.

The simple truth is there is an absence of real quality in abundance, something that was not lost on Hodgson. "You don't necessarily have to be the best team to win a tournament," he said. "You can get by with good team spirit, and a bit of luck at the right times."

These were revealing moments by the side of Manchester City's pitch, if only for the frequency with which Hodgson halted play to pass on instructions. "Very hands-on," James Milner observed afterwards. Vocal, too. "You don't have to use short passes," the new England manager could be heard shouting at one point. "Not if you want to use your big man up front." Carroll put the ball past Joe Hart and Hodgson nodded his head appreciatively. "Well done, son."

That strike puts Carroll into double figures for the third consecutive season.

There's a great scene where he's discussing something with Phil Neal, who is just violently agreeing with everything he says, and they look towards McMenemy for his opinion and he's moved as far away from them as he can on the bench and is writing (presumably his resignation letter) on a scrap of paper.
