Still, if it all leads to Hodgson doing anything remotely like this it'll be worth it

"He speaks my language," said the former Wimbledon manager [Egil Olsen] of his opposite number. "In my opinion, they should go more direct. I am a more direct manager but, even here, people don't agree with me. I guess in Norway I belong to a little group [of one], and in England people don't like the direct approach and such strict defensive organisation."

r|t|c, Saturday, 26 May 2012 10:01 (eleven years ago) link

How on earth did he manage to fail at Wimbledon?

I think I'll need to watch that documentary again. England's loss is punditry's gain.

yeah i started watching it yesterday

didnt know about barnes ever being booed, was he shit for england at the time?

gazza stealing the show obv. "who do think you are now geordie? you're just a thick fuckin geordie like me!" banter to shearer with just the ever-so-slightest edge you can't quite dismiss

and lawrie mcmenemy and phil neal... fucking hell not a single clue

r|t|c, Saturday, 26 May 2012 10:58 (eleven years ago) link

Barnes was pretty poor as i recall, disappeared for long stretches of the game. Also England fans.

<3 Graham Taylor for that film, and I haven't even seen it yet. I hope someone's working on Roy for one.

Barnes was always unpopular, was he not? He could never live up to that first goal.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 26 May 2012 11:14 (eleven years ago) link

Bergkamp's goal at 8:45 here is sublime. Such a Bergkamp goal.

ian wright cutting his spaghetti up with a knife and fork is probably the most painful thing in the film so far tbh

"fucking hell... you talk until you're fucking blue in the face don't ya" - Taylor brilliantly summing up the helplessness of a manager once the players cross the line

i haven't watched it since it was first broadcast, i shd definitely revisit it with the benefit of hindsight

Phil Neal spends the whole time agreeing with/repeating anything anyone says - I think he must have been the inspiration for this sketch

yeah i remember the Phil Neal thing, it just seems like coaches' natural role, i remember laughing at Don Howe writing his postcards from the bench under Greenwood

Shall we make this our 'ILF comes together to watch' #2?

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 26 May 2012 11:57 (eleven years ago) link

interesting when he's doing the visit with the prison inmates and even then they're talking about how kids playing on full size pitches is bad for development same as now 18 years on

r|t|c, Saturday, 26 May 2012 12:02 (eleven years ago) link

There's a great scene where he's discussing something with Phil Neal, who is just violently agreeing with everything he says, and they look towards McMenemy for his opinion and he's moved as far away from them as he can on the bench and is writing (presumably his resignation letter) on a scrap of paper.

I must be old, I recognise nobody in ITV2 idents (aldo), Saturday, 26 May 2012 12:17 (eleven years ago) link

Chris, Saturday, 26 May 2012 19:47 (eleven years ago) link

lol, that was useless. Made more so by Hodgson opining post-match that England passed the ball too much in the 2nd half and should have got it forward earlier! England's passing was shocking, although Downing can add +1 to his total of "should have been an assist" thanks to Carroll wasting a lovely cross. Nice goal from Ashley Young although Hangeland's defending was woeful. Still in ever changing times it's nice that at least the general level of England performances remains the same.

do you reckon there's twitter #joeks going around about john terry congratulating england on their hard fought 0-0 away win

Richard Williams in fine form

With a deftly volleyed reverse-angle pass reminiscent of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Carroll made the opportunity for Young to score the opening goal with a composed shot across Rune Jarstein.

ozil needs to be substituted cuz he runs out of steam after 70 minutes so with reference to hare v tortoise it is submitted that tortoise will on a long enough timescale have reached the exhausted hare

In Krakow the team will be located in the centre of the city and Neville believes giving the squad a sense of freedom will provide normality and help improve performance levels.

"That is the big message, to have players doing what they would normally do.

"You can never replicate the home environment but in terms of being free to go for a coffee or to the shops - we should embrace it, even though it has never been done before."

i've got a feeling neville is about to spunk all the good will he's gained this past season up the wall at this tournament.

second only to popcorn (or something), Friday, 1 June 2012 02:40 (eleven years ago) link

I think if/when it all goes tits up it's going to be seen as Hodgson's fault and Neville goes back to punditry relatively unscathed.

Still, I look forward to seeing Wazza doing whatever the Polish equivalent of the Dentist's Chair is.

a permanent embarrassment and an occasional disgrace (onimo), Friday, 1 June 2012 07:45 (eleven years ago) link

i think when it goes tits up we've probably already got a "only just got the job, lot of injuries, players underperformed" storyline that will see Hodgson come away relatively undamaged

korea opportunities (Noodle Vague), Friday, 1 June 2012 08:03 (eleven years ago) link

I think England getting out of the group will be enough to stop Roy taking too much criticism given how low expectations are (compared with previous tournaments). That should be enough to take him through qualifying from an easy group to being sacked for not reaching the semis of the next World Cup.

a permanent embarrassment and an occasional disgrace (onimo), Friday, 1 June 2012 08:45 (eleven years ago) link

from an easy WC group, that is.

a permanent embarrassment and an occasional disgrace (onimo), Friday, 1 June 2012 08:45 (eleven years ago) link

England's prospects of getting out the group have got to be pretty low tbh. France seem tasty, Ukraine have home advantage and are rumoured to be alright, and the squad, manager and formation is almost custom-designed not to beat Sweden. Then there's injuries, insane logistics, general knackeredità, ennui and so forth.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 1 June 2012 08:54 (eleven years ago) link

Even with historically low expectations they are joint favourites with France to win the group. Ukraine are about as good as Scotland. Sweden game will be tight but I think England will edge it.

a permanent embarrassment and an occasional disgrace (onimo), Friday, 1 June 2012 08:58 (eleven years ago) link

Think Eng will draw all 3 games (that's being optimistic re France game but opening games always seem to be draws)

pandemic, Friday, 1 June 2012 09:10 (eleven years ago) link

i was impressed with how quickly hodgson got that SHAPE drilled into them for the norway game. i wouldn't be surprised if they did quite well.
