Well at times it felt like the KP character could basically have been played by WF and it would be right up his alley. But far less subtlety.

I love this show so, so much, but I feel like they nailed it with the end of Season 3.

I really don't like that @kfuckingp Twitter account - I seem to remember that some fan dude started the account and quickly picked up a shitload of followers, and then he was reluctantly allowed to carry on. Whoever runs it seems to use it to either sell stuff, try to creepily get freebies, or to just generally not really get the humor that makes the show work at all. Maybe that's not the case anymore, but it's just kind of a bummer.

Walter Galt, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 14:11 (eleven years ago) link

i recall seeing the @kfuckingp account break character around the end of S1 and mention it was a paying gig and he was looking for work now that the season was over

Might be a bad move, it was very satisfying to leave it on an almost perfect run.

kind of bummed the whole first ep asks you to assume he's been effectively emasculated since the end of season 3 just to start a story arc of him breaking free from his new domesticity, but it i'm still excited for this season

there's just something about the way danny mcbride is so totally present in the role of KP... like even just watching him dance in slow-mo or catching a brief closeup of his facial expressions during April's acceptance speech-- he plays KP so fully and artfully, its a level of performance that's so rare in comedy IMO

great to see tim heidecker and ken marino

3 was definitely weaker but nowhere near as terrible as the episode where Will Ferrell's character has Stevie dressed up as a geisha.

Yeah I liked the total bizarreness of that one.

this season has been great. Kenny cradling the robot <3

Number None, Thursday, 31 October 2013 01:45 (ten years ago) link

The robot going out kind of killed me. And yeah I've been enjoying this season a lot, Kenny not-quite-trying to be a family man is pretty great comedy.

I go a little overboard with this stuff, but I think this series of the show has evened out the hit-and-miss stuff from previous seasons (the occasional frat-guy bro-isms of S1, the slightly forced surreality of S2, the darker plot-heavy stuff of S3, and - yes - the often-way-too-broad Will Ferrell stuff) into the best examination of class and race on TV since, hell, The Wire. It plays with fire sometimes (and I'm uncomfortable with the unavoidable fact that a big chunk of the audience is laughing *with* Kenny when he says something horrifically racist), but the characterizations are so unbelievably rich in this thing. I think it's full-on high art.

that fucking robot is so lol for some reason

goth drama is universal (latebloomer), Saturday, 2 November 2013 18:44 (ten years ago) link

I hated this after the first episode of series 1 - in a reactionary way I suppose, after some of the "retard" talk. But I give it another go recently and watched the lot. It has a deceptive soft centre and is explosively hilarious at times, easily amongst some of the best comedy I have ever seen.

I told you I go a little overboard on this stuff!
But I kind of mean it! I need somebody else to write the thinkpiece, 'cause I'm not that learned, but I think this show does "America" so well.
That ending monologue in the last episode!
"Could Schwarzenegger have ascended to the top of both film AND politics if he had actually given a fuck about his family?"

music by wayne kramer?!!

Jesus, the music on this show is a whole nother matter. This season has featured Lee Hazlewood, Holger Czukay, Blue Cheer, Dinah Washington, Miami Nights 1984, The Incredible Bongo Band, Ty Segall... last season there was some ESG, Bauhaus... plus a batch of clutch Southern rap...
