Part of the problem is defining who is gay. When I was younger I used to get a fair number of propositions from acquaintances of mine who were gay or bi. If I were to have accepted offers of oral sex would that have made me gay or just opportunistic? There was a short lived bit of pop culture not too long ago about LUGs, lesbian until graduation. So were these girls to be counted as gay? (Then there is the old joke that no woman is more than 3 drinks from a lesbian encounter.)
Also, a large part of our cultural news is based on certain specific large urban areas. These are the places where the concentration of homosexuals is significantly higher than the norm. I'm in Georgia and as far as I know there aren't that many gay venues in my immediate vicinity. However I do know that if for some reason I needed to find someone who is gay it would be simple enough to go to Atlanta and visit Little Five Points. When you come right down to it, your average midwestern gay teenager is probably just waiting to be old enough to move somewhere where he's not one of the few gay teens in town.

"if for some reason"

Brony! Broni! Broné! (Phil D.), Monday, 4 June 2012 18:46 (eleven years ago) link

The campaign to lie about the number of homosexuals has been underway for quite some time. I've read about instances where expressing belief of anything less than 10% is judged a nigh hate crime.
"Everybody is gay." Your favorite athlete. Any given construction worker (not just the one in the Village people). Hitler. Anybody who finds homosexuality disgusting and/or morally objectionable.
Pffft. I'll take the under on 2%. 1% if you're talking the authentic kind and don't include the ones just trying to upset their parents, hang with with the "hip" crowd, or run some sort of scam.

Why do you care how many gay people there are? Are you afraid you will catch it? Never ceases to amaze me how the supposed individualist crowd feels so threatened by the simple idea of letting people be who they are. I've really come to believe that some people feel threatened because of their own secret attractions. Otherwise, whats it to you?

that article is more about popular innumeracy than anything to do with homsexuality.

if you asked americans what % of us are black, the mean answer would be about 40%

you ask americans how much of the budget is spent on any miniscule program (foreign aid is a perennial example) and the answer is never less than a quarter.

"Bryson was then 'found alone and unconscious behind the wheel of his vehicle,' after allegedly causing another accident in the neighboring city of Rosemead about five minutes later."

Since Obama and his admin believe they don't owe anyone an explanation for anything, and that they are not capable of taking responsibility for anything, we are all free to speculate on what caused this man to be in 2 accidents five minutes apart.

MY best guess is he was abusing prescription medication. If the WH has a better explanation, then they'll render it. Until then, he's a pill-popping junkie. I guess it's better than being a commie like Van Jones.

Given the other overt and implicit EU member insults to Germany, the greatest German backlash in the last 80 years is not a matter of if, but when. And the longer it is repressed, the more explosively it will erupt.

Poe's Law rears its head:

Having a serious journalist use the phrase the "N-word" is beginning to take its toll. Doesn't this seem like an abdication of journalistic responsibilities to use the euphemism when discussing the subject? For example, did the researcher mentioned here actually type "N-word" into the google search box?

Admittedly, I'm avoiding the use of the word here, mostly to dodge censorship of my peers, and perhaps even a comment filter. But it just seems like a step backwards toward kindergarten to see responsible, rational adults discussing a serious subject, yet fearing to even speak its name. If the purpose is to avoid offense, it would seem more appropriate to take another step back and use a term such as "racial slur". This at least leaves some question in the reader's mind. When you say "N-word", it leaves no question in anyone's mind what has been mentioned, and it really doesn't even cushion the blow. Who doesn't read the code phrase and instantly voice the actual word in his head (I say 'his' head because, obviously, I can't guess as to a feminine reaction...)?

When can we shuck these PC affectations and someday start to call an S-word an S-word? If it's objectionable, then perhaps talking about it less, rather than in code will actually lead to its demise...

pretty fertile: The War on Nixon

the word "enjoyed" here -- those blackguards!:

In sum, Bradlee-Woodstein bloodlessly assassinated the president, routinized the criminalization of policy and partisan differences, grievously wounded the institution of the presidency, and enjoyed and profited from doing so.

also lol this comment:

The only difference between Stalins [show trials] and Watergate's was the the body count.

but probably my subtle favorite:

And perhaps the all-time nadir in American presidential-election ethics was achieved in 1968, when Lyndon Johnson tried to salvage the election for his vice president, Hubert Humphrey, with a completely imaginary claim of a peace breakthrough in the Vietnam talks a few days before the election.

ok a little bit ago, NR published an article by Matthew Schmitz, an editor at "first things", about how the "anti-sharia" types need to cool it

http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/302280/fears-creeping-sharia-matthew-schmitz

and a follow-up blog post

http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/303135/anti-sharia-laws-are-magic-matthew-schmitz

(great title). that of course let to a bunch of crossing posts from andrew mccarthy and andrew bostom (another one of these sharia experts we have running around now).

but also some by david yerushalmi, which is kind of a blast from the past:

Into the Sewer: the American right wing, 2011

here's his crazy website again:

one of yerushalmi's responses:

http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/303202/re-anti-sharia-magic-david-yerushalmi

and a comment thereupon:

Mattand
06/19/12 15:13

Oh yeah, one more thing: is it true that Mr. Yerushalmi's group SANEworks espouses the following ideas:

- It shall be a felony punishable by 20 years in prison to knowingly act in furtherance of, or to support the, adherence to Islam.

- The Congress of the United States of America shall declare the US at war with the Muslim Nation or Umma.

- The President of the United States of America shall immediately declare that all non-US citizen Muslims are Alien Enemies under Chapter 3 of Title 50 of the US Code and shall be subject to immediate deportation.

- No Muslim shall be granted an entry visa into the United States of America.

If the above is true, does National Review also support these ideas? Get back to me when you can. No rush.

Enjoy your afternoon!
