i'm wondering about the size of winterfell these days. i originally got the idea that it was a pretty substantial settlement, but ever since, it's seemed like a courtyard or two and a couple buildings. it's seemed especially tiny in the last few episodes. then when the kids were leaving, it looked MASSIVE, like it would house thousands. how could a city that big possibly be held by 20 men, even with its army away?

xp samwise is tolkein's ideal of a salt of the earth type who loves his master and knows his place. samwell is the effeminate son of a powerful noble. but they are both fat and short tho.

okay, but in the last ep it was shown to be enormous. like the size of a small walled city. aren't there quite a few people living within those walls? like, not just the royal family and their staff, but a settlement of sorts? this is the impression i've gotten, anyway...

real question tho, like wtf actually happened in winterfell? it was so clunky and fucking dumb, if it's a cliffhanger tell us, if not then fine. but it was just weird, i watched with my brother and we had to pause it to talk about what might have happened, it was so weird.

enjoyed the topless white walker that looked like iggy pop.

Lotta lame cliffhangers in this one.

Seemed like a lot of the show was making sure everyone was included. Maybe would have been better as a two-parter so there was plenty of time for acting/writing chops to carry the plot rather than "BREAKING: Daenerys Targaryen is about to enter the House of the Undying. For more, let's turn it over to etc".

Also why is any confused about winterfell. What's left of theon's army trashed the place when they left. At least that's the impression I got.

i sort of understand where the confusion is coming from... theon's speech sorta gave the impression that that northerners were on the verge of storming back into winterfell for some final battle, and then all of a sudden they just disappear? i mean i guess they could've encountered them and fought them all off screen or w/e, but...

ya it was weird like one minute it looks like theyre gonna hand over theon take their amnesty and be out of there then the next everythings all burning and dead

but the [spoiler] happened. they had nothing to stay for. and Theon's dudes were practically sellswords. They'd killed anyone in the castle worth killing that hadn't escaped already, so there's no way they'd hang around and fight for something they didn't give a crap for. Is my thinking.

no, yeah, that all makes sense. but theon spent the entire previous night talking about how he was surrounded, how he couldn't sleep, then he gives this speech as if a fight is imminent... and then his men are able to up and leave w/o encountering the northerners? and if they did encounter them but were able to go thru, how did they get away with burning the village? did none of it matter cuz they gave up theon?

It wasn't the Ironborn, as far as I know. They were handing over Theon to the Northmen to ensure they could all just go home. I don't know what happens, but apparently that whole Winterfell being burned thing *is* a cliffhanger, they just didn't mention it. I would say Bran et al wouldn't have known what happened and they would have just assumed it was the Greyjoy's dudes, but the Maester would have known. But maybe he was too busy dying. I felt the implication was that it was the Northmen (they were the army of one of Robb's subordinates bastards, right?). There might be another powerplay happening in the North.

Robb made it explicit that anyone from the Iron Islands could leave Winterfell and just go home freely if they gave up Theon. They clearly took that deal. xpost

yeah, no i know. i guess i hadn't considered that robb's men would've burned the village. my thinking was that it might be hard to have that deal go thru if they had burned the entire village on the way outta town.

I think the key is that they weren't Robb's men. Robb wanted to go take back Winterfell himself because obv its HIS, but one of his bannermen convinced him to let his bastard do it. There's something else at work. I agree that it wasn't made clear, or they felt it was too difficult to explain or they didn't have the time to introduce yet another element at the last minute. They should have found a way though.

Yeah basically the question of why it was burned and who did it is bewildering. Really lazy of them IMO, it's not a cliffhanger if it plain doesn't make sense.

Thought the house of the undying stuff was dumb, that stupid dream sequence took ages. Then it was like "I have magical power beyond your wildest dr.... Ugh I'm dead nooooo" - in about 3 seconds.

They obviously can only do 10 lavish episodes a season and still have giant gaps in the interim, but when you think of how little has happened in s2 it's sort of crazy.

They could have about ten more episodes.

So disappointed about the how the House of the Undying turned out, though it was nice to see Drogo again.

I loved the wintry Red Keep, that was enough for me.

i was wondering what/when that was supposed to be – the past, after her father was dethroned, or a future where Daenerys has taken the throne "back".

I thought that was meant to be the future, after winter has fallen and shit has really hit the fan.

I had no idea what was happening at Winterfell, that bit felt really rushed. I assume the Iron Island dudes burned the city and then escaped with Theon in tow but I've no idea what was supposed to have happened to the army waiting outside.

I've watched most of this in one three-week binge and have only just caught up and some if it is ridiculous and some of it feels rushed but wow that siege episode was amazing.

Absolutely. He's knows Tyrion is very smart, and he knows he has many reasons to hate him.

and nearly everyone else hates him, so why not steal his glory aswell.

OTOH he knows Tyrion is the only one of his children who isn't an idiot and probably needs him around, but needs him cowed as well. That one will probably backfire.

yeah I dunno that Tywin is the kind of dude who wants to be surrounded by people as smart as him.
