ya it was weird like one minute it looks like theyre gonna hand over theon take their amnesty and be out of there then the next everythings all burning and dead

lag∞n, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 05:10 (eleven years ago) link

but the [spoiler] happened. they had nothing to stay for. and Theon's dudes were practically sellswords. They'd killed anyone in the castle worth killing that hadn't escaped already, so there's no way they'd hang around and fight for something they didn't give a crap for. Is my thinking.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 05:15 (eleven years ago) link

no, yeah, that all makes sense. but theon spent the entire previous night talking about how he was surrounded, how he couldn't sleep, then he gives this speech as if a fight is imminent... and then his men are able to up and leave w/o encountering the northerners? and if they did encounter them but were able to go thru, how did they get away with burning the village? did none of it matter cuz they gave up theon?

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 5 June 2012 05:18 (eleven years ago) link

Also why is any confused about winterfell. What's left of theon's army trashed the place when they left. At least that's the impression I got.

It wasn't the Ironborn, as far as I know. They were handing over Theon to the Northmen to ensure they could all just go home. I don't know what happens, but apparently that whole Winterfell being burned thing *is* a cliffhanger, they just didn't mention it. I would say Bran et al wouldn't have known what happened and they would have just assumed it was the Greyjoy's dudes, but the Maester would have known. But maybe he was too busy dying. I felt the implication was that it was the Northmen (they were the army of one of Robb's subordinates bastards, right?). There might be another powerplay happening in the North.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 05:20 (eleven years ago) link

Robb made it explicit that anyone from the Iron Islands could leave Winterfell and just go home freely if they gave up Theon. They clearly took that deal. xpost

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 05:21 (eleven years ago) link

ya thats m/l what i was thinking

yeah, no i know. i guess i hadn't considered that robb's men would've burned the village. my thinking was that it might be hard to have that deal go thru if they had burned the entire village on the way outta town.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 5 June 2012 05:24 (eleven years ago) link

I think the key is that they weren't Robb's men. Robb wanted to go take back Winterfell himself because obv its HIS, but one of his bannermen convinced him to let his bastard do it. There's something else at work. I agree that it wasn't made clear, or they felt it was too difficult to explain or they didn't have the time to introduce yet another element at the last minute. They should have found a way though.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 05:28 (eleven years ago) link

alright, yeah, that makes sense then

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 5 June 2012 05:30 (eleven years ago) link

lol the reason I wasn't confused is that I had forgotten about the northmen so *sheepish*

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 05:40 (eleven years ago) link

well we never saw them, only heard about them, so easy to forget. a quick glimpse of the camp outside the walls would've been enough.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 10:49 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah basically the question of why it was burned and who did it is bewildering. Really lazy of them IMO, it's not a cliffhanger if it plain doesn't make sense.

Thought the house of the undying stuff was dumb, that stupid dream sequence took ages. Then it was like "I have magical power beyond your wildest dr.... Ugh I'm dead nooooo" - in about 3 seconds.

They obviously can only do 10 lavish episodes a season and still have giant gaps in the interim, but when you think of how little has happened in s2 it's sort of crazy.

They could have about ten more episodes.

So disappointed about the how the House of the Undying turned out, though it was nice to see Drogo again.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 12:56 (eleven years ago) link

nothing really happened this season

lag∞n, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 12:57 (eleven years ago) link

yeah House of Undying was not worth the buildup.

this was my complaint about the book this season was based off

Mordy, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 13:20 (eleven years ago) link

I loved the wintry Red Keep, that was enough for me.

poxen, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 13:37 (eleven years ago) link

i was wondering what/when that was supposed to be – the past, after her father was dethroned, or a future where Daenerys has taken the throne "back".

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 14:05 (eleven years ago) link

I thought that was meant to be the future, after winter has fallen and shit has really hit the fan.

I had no idea what was happening at Winterfell, that bit felt really rushed. I assume the Iron Island dudes burned the city and then escaped with Theon in tow but I've no idea what was supposed to have happened to the army waiting outside.

I've watched most of this in one three-week binge and have only just caught up and some if it is ridiculous and some of it feels rushed but wow that siege episode was amazing.

wonder if grandpa lannister didnt marginalize half man cause he was worried abt him getting too powerful

lag∞n, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 14:12 (eleven years ago) link

Absolutely. He's knows Tyrion is very smart, and he knows he has many reasons to hate him.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 14:17 (eleven years ago) link

and nearly everyone else hates him, so why not steal his glory aswell.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 14:19 (eleven years ago) link

OTOH he knows Tyrion is the only one of his children who isn't an idiot and probably needs him around, but needs him cowed as well. That one will probably backfire.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 15:26 (eleven years ago) link

yeah I dunno that Tywin is the kind of dude who wants to be surrounded by people as smart as him.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 15:53 (eleven years ago) link

she blathered on for all that just to say that the Game of Thrones is sort of like The Queen?

u_u

nobody should be paid for that sort of worthless shit

isn't it funny you guys how we're all watching this show about Queens and irl they're talking about the Queen lol how weird is that you guys

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 17:22 (eleven years ago) link

Also, was the zombie/white walker on the horse Dothraki? His hair and clothing made it look like he might be, but it is hard to tell because: zombie.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 18:59 (eleven years ago) link

No, they're all wildlings or Night's Watch men, people beyond the wall.

gyac, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 18:59 (eleven years ago) link

undead first men.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 19:03 (eleven years ago) link

the white walkers aren't just reanimated humans, they're something more ancient/powerful that have the ability to reanimate the dead

man so assassin dude was magical!! in all ur faces

r|t|c, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 19:07 (eleven years ago) link

guys on the horses with ice swords = white walkers
zombie horde on foot = wights, created by white walkers

ciderpress, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 19:09 (eleven years ago) link

changing them from 'others' to 'white walkers' for tv made the term 'wight' quite a bit more confusing it seems

ciderpress, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 19:09 (eleven years ago) link

as they same others as on lost tho idgi

lag∞n, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 19:11 (eleven years ago) link

this ep was pretty anticlimactic after the siege tbh, felt more like the slow first episode of a new season

maester luwin nooo ;_;

r|t|c, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 19:13 (eleven years ago) link

i disagree, i felt like it was a great comedown after the siege and set things up for next season nicely.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 19:49 (eleven years ago) link

This was a lot like last season's in that it was all comedown/setting up for next season but with an awesome Dany/Dragon moment.

they are called white walkers in the series, but less often than 'Others' and usually by more peripheral characters.

gyac, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 21:17 (eleven years ago) link

Soooo what happened to Hound?

Evan, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 02:36 (eleven years ago) link

Clay, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 03:01 (eleven years ago) link

In retrospect, I think that the way they did the Houses of the Holy is better than trying to adapt it direct from the books, if only as a mood piece. PARTICULARLY the Drogo scene, which is better than anything GRRM has written in the books.

Liz Leeemon (Leee), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 05:44 (eleven years ago) link

I disagree, I felt like it lost all of its creepiness on screen. They truncated the hell out of it, to the point where it just seemed like a lame funhouse. Except the keep and the iron throne, that was p rad

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 05:47 (eleven years ago) link

my problem with the house was that dany's triumph over it seemed completely unearned. perhaps it would have been too programmatic and obvious, but i felt there should have been some real challenge overcome (and attendant "lesson learned") before unlocking dragon powerz.

also, leee otm: dany's reunion w/ drogo was one of the most moving moments of the season. i'm only repeating what others have said, but clarke handled it beautifully, and it went a long way towards making up for her deficiencies as an actor and the dullness of her character arc over the past few episodes.

spextor vs bextor (contenderizer), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 06:00 (eleven years ago) link

funny how people here really don't like Clarke as an actress. she gets praised a lot elsewhere.

I thought she did have to overcome the temptation to be with Drogo and live a happy existence in a dreamland.
