Jesus, Maria, that raccoon pic is freaky! Did people use hunt them/raise them?

It looks as if the boy didn't catch any.

"Oh yeah, you got some fish? The next time I'm gonna catch me some real fish, at least a thousand times bigger than your teeny tiny girly-fish! You just wait..."

It probably isn't, emily, but that's why I qualified with "mildly". x-post.

-- Tuomas (tuomas.alh...), October 13th, 2005. (later)

I think they hunted them. They being my grandparents and friends. This was in northern New Hampshire near the Quebec border. Connecticut lakes area. There's photos in the album of various dead animals strung up (bear, gopher-like rodents, etc.), and groups of people posing with guns. There are also photos somewhere of my grandpa in black-face during a high school minstrel show. Yet my grandparents look so healthy and happy and snappy doing these horrifying things.

So do you suppose it's easier to hold a frozen fish than an unfrozen fish? Frozen doesn't flop around, but ice is slippery.

pictures of people holding really big fish always make me feel really sad. imagine being able to evade all the predators in the ocean for long enough to get really enormous, and then come to such an undignified end on a fishing rod. i bet those giant fish don't even make for good eating. poor things.

gem (trisk), Friday, 14 October 2005 02:31 (eighteen years ago) link

The one I posted was let go only seconds after that picture was taken. They guessed that it was about 200 years old (it was a Lake Sturgeon).

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 14 October 2005 02:36 (eighteen years ago) link

that's cool, i think a lot of really keen anglers do that, but i bet a lot of amateurs don't. also sometimes do the fish still die though if they've been reeled up from deep enough that the pressure changes really quickly...? on my dad's boat i've seen all their bowels come out, i wonder if they can survive that if they're let go?

gem (trisk), Friday, 14 October 2005 02:41 (eighteen years ago) link

I wouldn't think so! Poor little guys!

I went googling for "fish penis" so you don't have to.

That's a friend of a friend, BTW. My best friend who lives in Thailand has met a lot of crazy Aussies whilst living there, and some of these Aussies like to catch and hold up enormous fuck-off fish.
