This was a compilation of all the doors best songs on all their best discs. How could this get a rating anywhere near this low? these albums seperately would gain ratings of at least 8.0. i think this disc deserved much more attention.

I'm just saying what my opinion on music, what I look like, and why I think African culture has inspired recent artists should even come into play when it comes to me seeding and sharing. I had to go to work before that and was very stressed out, but I still don't see why I have to reapply to a council with detailed essays explaining who I'd pick - Morrissey, Moby, or Momus. I'm the only person who thinks these questions are nonsense? I'm the only person with any sense?

A ratio is a way to track a user’s contribution to a site. There are two factors to a ratio, the amount of data uploaded, and the amount of data downloaded. A ratio is calculated by dividing the amount uploaded by the amount downloaded. For example if a user has uploaded 160 GB, and downloaded 30 GB his ratio would be 5.33.

African American culture has a long influence on Western Popular music. The most notable influence began in the 1950s with the advent of Rock and Roll, and escalated with the rise in popularity of Elvis Presley. Elvis was heavily influenced by the blues sound, and mixed “white” music and “black” music. Elvis’ popularity continued to rise in the 1960s, as did the influence of African American music. The 1960s also saw the rise of Motown, which began as a record label owned by an African American releasing music created by African Americans. Artists such as the Supremes, found crossover success and were embraced by American pop culture. Many bands similar to the Supremes also found success and influence. This is really just the beginning; the most recent influence is in the form of hip hop. Hip hop began on the streets of New York in the 1970s. A prime example of its influence and acceptance by Western popular music is the rap category in the grammy awards.

The most unjust pitchfork numerical rating was the official release of Fiona Apple’s Exrtraordinary Machine. A release of the album produced by John Brion was leaked onto the internet, many thought this was a great release, the record company disagreed, and changes were made. The John Brion release received a rating of 7.8 whereas the official release received a 6.2. I believe this to be the perfect example of pitchfork rating an album based on factors outside of the realm of the music itself. At the time it was sort of cool to dislike the official release. I listened to both versions, and personally thought the official was just as good as, if not better than the leaked version. This is just one of many examples of situations just like this.
6) You are stranded on a desert island. Choose one artist's music: Morrissey, Moby, or Momus? Why? (six sentence minimum).
I would have to choose Morrissey. His music has always been consistently high quality. The smiths are one of my favorite bands from the 80s. His lyrics, while sometimes depressing, can be quite witty, and entertaining. Plus, his social commentary is spot on: “America Is Not The World”. Moby’s music is tolerable, but I think I would go insane after a while, because it would all sound the same after a while. I’m not sure who Momus is, and while I enjoy discovering new music, I would not want it for a desert island.

This is helpful in determining the worth of a user to a specific community. It is generally in the best interest of everyone involved to keep a ratio of 2.0 or above, as this means that you are sharing twice as much as you receive.

3) Percussion is part of the religion for many tribes in Africa, thus making it part of their culture. Everything they do has a rhythm. So, even though they probably came to America with no instruments, the rhythm was a part of who they were, and it bled into everyday American life. Compare the works of these composers to that of 19th Century composers like Brahms, Beethoven and Berlioz and I am inclined to think that you will agree that percussion came unto its own in the 1900's with a new respectability. The influence on popular music, however, is more obvious. Simply compare the music of Steven Foster to the music of Eminem. African influences also helped break down segregation barriers, as music appeals to all races, ages, and genders. Music has a healing power and helps unite different groups of the world.

5) I look to pitchfork for reviews about albums I am undecided on getting. One review in particular stands out as not being fair to the album. They gave Face To Face's covers album "Standards and Practices" a 2.5. I wonder if I do not agree with this rating simply because I am a Face To Face fan, but I believe that the band wanted to compile a tribute to some songs that they felt were influential to them. They were not trying to break new ground here, just give some of their favorites a "Face To Face flavor".

6) This is a tough one to answer, though I would have to go with Moby. I like Morrissey more, but a lot of his songs sounds very much alike. With moby, I would be getting something different with every song, and that would be a good thing if I were stranded with nothing but his music. There would be the song I could go to when I'm in different moods, as well as songs that could bring me out of certain moods.

The rating of 9.0 for Scott Walker's The Drift baffles me. While Pitchfork is great for introducing the masses to new music, the rating they gave this album is Pitchfork at its pretentious best. I will agree that The Drift is an interesting piece of art, but it is not music that I would ever want to listen to. Scott Walker wails and wails amid a flurry of unsettling melodies and sounds. It is the creepiest fucking thing I have ever heard.

Jazz, blues, rock and roll, hip hop, house, R&B, soul, Ray Charles -- hell, I don't know. There are many perfectly good writers who could go on about the topic much longer than me, often their own embarrassment. The topic is too large to summarize, and the music is too influential to even get a clear read on anymore. The culture and music that African Americans pioneered have become an inextricable part of the culture and music of the world at large. I would rather not try to summarize something like that -- at least, not this week.

I'm not too keen on that grey zone between seven and eight. I don't know if it's unjust, but it's the least useful to me. There seem to be as many great, favorite albums that fall into this rating range as there are albums I listen to twice and forget about. For practical purposes (do I want this record?), a rating of five or six is not a mediocre rating, it's a bad one. Seven to eight is the true mushy middle. It often feels like a cop-out rating (unless you think all ratings are cop-outs, and they kind of are). It says, "Yeah, this is good, you might like it, sure whatever, but next time ask somebody who cares."

Morrissey. In a situation like that, I'd prefer to have someone arch and amusing around. Arch, amusing, and able to write a catchy rockabilly tune about the depths of his hate, well, that's bonus. I wouldn't be able to deal with Moby past about 1994 and -- whoops! Too late. And I'm not familiar enough with Momus's music to have formed any opinion. Too risky for a desert island.

A ratio, which, despite popular opinion, does not rhyme with patio, is a representation of the quantifiable difference between two sets of data. While it is popular on websites as a simple representation of the difference between a user's upload and download, it actually has many more uses in real life. For example, when someone is said to be acting "rational," they are actually thinking about smart things to do with often involve numbers, whereas an "irrational" person is just thinking about colors or love or some other unquantifiable thing. Ratio also does not rhyme with "kappa," a legendary Japanese monster.

It was just under point-5... I didn't use it as much as I should have, sadly, because I only used it for things I couldn't find elsewhere-- and when something was that unpopular, it took weeks just to seed them to that point-5 mark. It WOULD have been higher, too, because I was about to start ripping my dad's weird vinyl folk records about entirely forgotten political causes (Ding Dong Dollar-- the BEST anti-Polaris record ever made! Err...)

It all started in the era of slavery, when fat white children no longer needed to actually do their own chores because someone did it for them. At first, this seemed fantastic, as all humans tend to try to get the most out of life for the least effort made. However, the daily routine of chores is good for the mind, and without it, ennui can seep in. The joy in white music slowly leaked out as all the honkies got more dead-eyed and disappointed with their empty lives of leisure. While slaves were set free, this attitude was never shook by white America, and the melancholy of never knowing a day of hard work truly took its toll. The explosion of office culture, where thousands of these whiteys were packed into closed quarters to stare at spreadsheets and make meetings, while black people cruelly prevented them from taking more rewarding, lower-paying blue-collar jobs in their urban areas. The levels of bummer-ness in white culture exploded into American popular culture over the fifty years following, taking various forms such as Old Sad Bastard Country Tunes, Grunge, Emo, Goth, and Reggaeton. Without the significant effect that African American culture had upon the youth of America, we would have been robbed of these incredibly relevant and timeless genres of music-- and for that, I thank them. I thank the entirety of the culture in a blanketlike fashion.

0.0 is the most unjust because it implies that there is nothing good coming out of a given record. First of all, at worst, you have a beautiful, shiny frisbee. You could also use it as a signal to airplanes in the event of a crash or something. You can use it as a prank-- secretly replace your mom's favourite Pet Benatar record with it. Those three things alone make any record worth AT LEAST 8.7 by Pitchfork standards.

2b) I was a power user on OiNK (rip) and had a ratio of 1.37
3) When African Americans were forced into slavery, they sang soul and the blues. These a capellas were mostly spiritual and had a huge influence on the black church, consequently affecting African American culture. After slavery was abolished, African Americans continued their music which was integrated into the civil rights movement. Ragtime performers, jazz artists, and blues artists, such as Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong, and Robert Johnson, not only fueled the civil rights movement; they also were a major starting point for rock and roll. Bo Diddley, Chuck Barry, and Little Richard influenced Elvis Presley who in turn made rock and roll mainstream. They also influenced the Beatles, the greatest band in the history of the world. 5) The most unjust pitchfork rating is definitely their rating of the Dandy Warhols-Odditorium or Warlords of Mars (a score of 1.2). Okay, so this album did not have any memorable singles (like We Used to Be Friends), but that shouldn't matter. It is a great album overall, the song Down Like Disco itself should boost the rating to at least a 6. The song "Easy" has all the classic Dandy sounds and includes a newer, orchestral sound. It's not a breakout album, but it is awesome nonetheless and the rating should be revised to at lease a 7/10.
6) Morrissey is the single greatest singer in the world. His voice, his lyrics, his stage presence, his ego, his persona are exactly what a musician should be like. He sets the standards for all new singers. His solo work is (almost) as good as The Smiths, and the only reason it isn't better is because Johnny Marr and Andy Rourke are not in it. I'm very glad this question is up here because I am very passionate about the Smiths (I have almost every CD and several vinyls) and consider them the greatest band besides the Beatles. Morrissey never gets boring, he only gets better and if I am ever stuck on an island, I would be fine as long as I have my Morrissey albums.

That notwithstanding, the review even was generally positive, giving rise to the question as to whether the numerical rating had anything to do with anything but a statement of personal dislike towards the band. The music itself, an enticing mixture of polyrhythms, orchestral horns, and hooky melodies, is Pitchfork fodder, and has an essential well made quality that even with a subjective dislike would not warrant less than a 5.0. Obviously, then, it is not about the music and thus a worthless rating.
6) Moby. I like Morrissey best, but I imagine that his moping about would get old quickly. Moby may not be the best artist in the world, but I imagine that his music would be fine background for island living. His blues samples seem to be a bit more genuinely sad than Morrissey's fictive emoting, and I think a stranding would not be as overwrought an experience as unrequited love. Momus can be interesting but is even more pretentious of a twat than Morrissey, and for the rest of my life I would rather have pretty good music that I don't intensely like than an occasionally great artist that is usually annoying. Further, I think Moby has enough sonic variety to keep me interesting, and plus he's a fan of Public Image Ltd. Though if The Smiths counted with Morrissey the scales might tilt in his favor.......

African American culture has influenced Western popular music from many angles. Most notably now is the hip hop culture's fusion with Western popular music. Pop music in the Western culture has expanded from softer "cute" or "honest" songs to the point where hip hop is just as much, if not more prevalent in today's pop music. In fact, sometimes when popular artists do collaborations, it becomes a complete homogenization of the two. Most true rock bands are now known as indie music. This shows just how far the focus of Western popular music has shifted. I do not feel it is better or worse, but it is what it is. I do have to say though, I am always a fan of a sick beat!

5)While I put both LCD Soundsystem and The NoTwist on my lists at number one, there is a big difference between best album of the year and best album since I was born. Pitchfork gave these albums both a 9.2. The NoTwist deserve it fully. Not only did they make deep, catchy (sick) beats, but had thought provoking lyrics and a theme that went throughout the whole album. One can tell by listening striaght through that the songs make a clear but natural transition from begining to end. LCD Soundsystem has some rediculously sick songs on their new album. The introspective "All My Friends" and "Someone Great" are awesome tracks, and who can't get a huge smile of familiarity when they hear "Time to Get Away". But some tracks just don't hit me as being as good and the flow of the cd seems too calculated and cold, which is why I listen to the songs I like as singles. "New York, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down" seems like a very forced ending to me. So ya, while I like both albums, I feel the same rating was unjust and Neon Golden should be raised or Sound of Silver should be lowered. Thank you.

6) Alright so Moby I would just make fun of all the time. While that is all good fun, I would probably get sick of it fast, so Moby is out. Morrissey wouldn't be bad to be on an island with but I would get bored of him too pretty fast (not as fast as Moby though). As for Momus, hell yes I would pick him I like how he has not stuck to one project all of his life. Seems like he would be the most interesting for the longest amount of time. He would have the best conversations. I mean, c'mon, he made an album about animals and sex. He's ready for island living!

3) From the early 20th century African American culture has always, and continues to influence Western popular culture. From the early blues of Elmore James and the later B.B. King, the West always looked to the States for the new sounds coming across. Without the blues and R&B tracks of the 50's, there would be no Rolling Stones, there would be no Led Zeppelin, there would be no Beatles.

As the sixties came and went with the biggest ever witnessed explosion in musical culture, Western Europe looked to Black America yet again as the single most influential artist (IMHO) of all time reinvented black ryhthyms to create FUNK! It was these records that formed the basis of the next musical revolution in Black America as hip-hop was born. As artists began to 'rap' over the beats sampled from James Brown, evryone in Western Europe began to look to the States again after their own revolution of Punk was on its final ebb. Although hip-hop has eveolved into various forms such as R&B, we still await the next true Black American revolution whatever that form shall take.

6) Its going to have to be Morrissey on that one simply for being the catalyst of turning me onto 'good' music instead of being force fed chart music. The Queen Is Dead was the first REAL album I ever fell in love with and can still hammer it endlessly now. In fact, Morrissey would be pretty perfect for those days when you just got sick of all that nice weather and just fancied getting a bit happier.

I wouldn't dream of listening to Moby whether I was stuck in the house or on an island, in fact I would probably make a swim for it given the choice.

As to Momus, again I am going to have to plead ignorance on this one for never actually knowing of his existence. Now that I do know and have done a little digging about, I'm quite intrigued. What I could do with is finding a kind friend that has some of his work so that they may allow me to hear it too :)

3) The Western sound began as early as Dvorak's lecture during the turn to the 20th century and his introduction of his "American" string quartet as his definition of a purely "American" sound, picked up over the years following by influential composers including Gershwin and Copeland. During the introduction of the jazz era durign the 1910's and '20's, African American rhythms were applied to this "American" sound as ensemble music including basic brass and string instruments, vocals, and percussion. These ensemble pieces came with a timbre/sound of it's own that can also partially be attributed to the often poor conditions of their instruments/ad hoc augmentations (i.e. plungers for trombone mutes). Over the course of the 20th century, the rise of Beatles "pop" in the 50's and "rock" in the 60's and 70's redefine what we consider western "popular" music today. African american rhythms were combined to create what would become "funk" in the 70's and "hip-hop" in the 80's and 90's. Today, the influence of african timbres and rhythms is undeniable. Hip hop is heard in every major dance club that features western popular music. As well, with the genre-crossing nature of popular music today, the african american musical influence can be seen everywhere from Justin Timberlake's production team (aka "Timbaland") to NIN's opening acts.

B/c I loathe Iron & Wine. Wtf nothing by these guys should get over a 4.0, their sound is OBNOXIOUS. From what I've heard by these guys, and I feel that their sound is contrived, cutesy and elementary. But w/e matter of opinion right?
