there was very little public enthusiasm tho, far fewer england flags on cars, very few supporters travelling, no reports of the usual post-exit riots in croydon and birmingham etc -- the worst patriotism queens in london this year are alas the bourgie shitheads with their union bunting tea parties (eugh)

this year it felt like the media really had to step in with the obnoxiousness -- the post group stage topofthefackinworld boosterism, chiles wishing ibrahimovic to get injured, bright doing his bit for nominative determinism, lawrenson hitting new lows of disinterest, lineker's hatefully joyless 'come on england', martin samuel saying all sorts of stupid things you didn't read cuz well good for you

lineker welcoming us in for halftime in the portugal-espana game with 'well that was boring' was kinda all-time

pandemic, Sunday, 1 July 2012 23:52 (eleven years ago) link

like the dolts i see with union jacks waving from their cars are certainly desperate for any excuse to flaunt one

coopflaggypost (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 1 July 2012 23:52 (eleven years ago) link

i kinda like Murray as a bloke i just hope he drops some "fuck off Englishes" funny if he gets to the final

coopflaggypost (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 1 July 2012 23:52 (eleven years ago) link

still think he'll choke tho

coopflaggypost (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 1 July 2012 23:53 (eleven years ago) link

yeah it's difficult not to like his surliness, lack of social skills and estrangement from home counties LTA pieties

look forward to him accidentally saying something offensive about bonnie prince charlie or margaret thatcher at some point

this used to be the No. 1 result for "i hate andy murray" but has sadly fallen off in recent times

I think Andy Murray is the most loathsome thing to represent “British” sport this guy is not “British” he is Scottish, most of the English cannot stand his conderscending and patronising swagger and mannerisms. The other thing is all of the idiots dresed up is union flag clothing (made in China) looking like the Chavs they are jumping on the badwaggon of some nasty guy. The guy is Scottish, just like David Coulthard and Colin McRae. They do not represent the English or the Welsh or the Irish. The notion of British is convoluted rubbish and Anrew Murray is the prime example of Media bandwagoning and “I think I am the best” Murray.

missing a "cockroach" or 2 but otherwise why i find Murray pretty defensible

coopflaggypost (Noodle Vague), Monday, 2 July 2012 00:06 (eleven years ago) link

andy murray is a cunt. just because he disgusts the english by simultaneously never winning a grand slam and not being english does not make him ok. there's no good guy in this story.

new challenge -- gis a picture of andres inesta looking smug

the smuggest thing is that you know he is so smug inside but just continues looking like casper the friendly ghost so indie people who hate ronaldo and find messi too good will continue to have him as their favourite player

Sir, – Is it just a coincidence that the four countries which reached the semi-finals of the European Championship were all ruled by fascist dictators during the middle third of the 20th century? Or did this experience somehow instil unshakeable ethnic self-belief, invincible national pride and a disciplined determination to defeat the opposition?

On the other hand, of the 16 qualifiers, Ireland is the only country that has enjoyed an unbroken history, since the mid-20th century, as a democratic republic – and we finished a dismal last! What do we need to change: our players, our manager or our political system? – Yours, etc,

snoopsheepysheep (darraghmac), Monday, 2 July 2012 02:03 (eleven years ago) link

I look smug as fuck every time I eat an ice cream, to be fair.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 2 July 2012 08:56 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah nothing says invincible national pride like La Liga.

Matt DC, Monday, 2 July 2012 08:56 (eleven years ago) link

And I challenge anyone on earth to score the winning goal in the last minute of extra time in the world cup final and then not look at least a little pleased when caressing it an hour later.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 2 July 2012 08:57 (eleven years ago) link

Wow, that is ages

Managing to avoid fighting the Nazis in World War II kinda helped there

Too Busy Thinking About Mr. Abie (Tom D.), Monday, 2 July 2012 09:51 (eleven years ago) link

I think the high ground's being taken over 'republic', rather than lack of national government.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 2 July 2012 10:04 (eleven years ago) link

Oh, well, they're right then!

Too Busy Thinking About Mr. Abie (Tom D.), Monday, 2 July 2012 10:06 (eleven years ago) link

Because y'know, god forbid Ireland be lumped in with Sweden

Ismael Klata, Monday, 2 July 2012 10:07 (eleven years ago) link

They definitely won me over last night (xp)

Too Busy Thinking About Mr. Abie (Tom D.), Monday, 2 July 2012 10:08 (eleven years ago) link

There is a downside to last night, and it's that parking the bus is *still* the best way to play against them.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 2 July 2012 10:15 (eleven years ago) link

Em and I have been watching them closely since the 2008 WC now. They're the only international football team she gives two figs about, and Barcelona are the only club team (other than her genetic and geographic Man Utd-ness). I've actually found the ire directed towards them recently really upsetting, heaven knows why, because I shouldn't have any emotional investment in them by typical standards and contexts; I just love to watch them play, and thing they are a. good. thing. ideologically.

xpost: that's true, but you can't blame Spain for other teams playing unimaginitive all-men-back tactics.

Last night was the best final to an international competition that I can remember.
