tip on pre or post tax figure?

always thought it was on the post-tax but noticed the other day on the bill it had a suggested amount, which was 20% of the pre-tax

Huh, I've always gone with post-tax just because that's the big number at the bottom of the check. I guess pre-tax probably makes more sense in the abstract, but, eh, servers gotta pay tax on stuff too, I don't mind the difference. Or is there really high tax on food where you are? It seems like 15-20% of 5-10% is kind of a trivial number, compared to the price of the food.

Anyway, I buy coffee at a local coffee shop. Two bags, in which I ask them to ground for french press. Total comes in to about $42. On top of that, they give me a free coffee drink, which I usually get a latte. How much would you tip on this?

Hmm. I don't buy bulk coffee so I'm not sure. The grinding is something they kind of normally do, but feels a little "extra" right? My gut would say to tip something around the price of what the free drink would have cost.

If the grinding is something they normally do for customers as a service, I don't think it needs to be tipped at all tbqh

(By which I mean, isn't a tip most often applied to things done normally as part of a service? And then an extra special big tip applied to something extra / especially good?)

I'm guessing most customers just go for whole bean, so it does feel like extra. I did $3 this morning. Will probably do $4 next time.

$3-4 sounds pretty all right, I can't imagine complaining seeing three bucks go in the tip jar!

To me the little-freebie is just a nice little opportunity for a moment of recognition between customer and employee - - - you get something you would have bought anyway, the money you would have paid for it leaves your wallet anyway, but both people involved feel like they stepped out of robotically carrying out formal transactions and "gave" something to the other. It's nice.

really feel like half the time I over-tip, especially when doing so after paying by credit card at restaurants, and under-tip other times. hope the universe averages these out when tallying my karma

My butchers (who hand out gratis stock/dog bones to those who need them) have a tip jar. If I got, say, £2.65 in change, the 65 pence goes in the jar. They generally tape a one-sheet, bold-type political screed onto this jar, about the suckage of the UK government etc. It's like reading the fevered thoughts of a non-racist, Murdoch-hating cab driver.

The folks at The Smoking Gun have interviewed the pastor who left the receipt.

“My heart is really broken,” she tells the site. “I’ve brought embarrassment to my church and ministry.”

The pastor claims that though she scratched out the automatic gratuity on the bill, she left a $6 cash tip at the table. She also alleges that the restaurant charged her the 18% tip anyway.

that pastor was apparently led to christianity after finding herself homeless and pregnant in the late 90s - how does one go from that situation, to being a pastor, to being the kind of person who treats people, who are barely making a living, with such little respect?

and she doesn't apologize anywhere in that interview - she's embarrassed for herself and on behalf of her church, but she doesn't seem to feel that bad for the waiter she stiffed.

It's my sincere hope that this alleged "Woman of God" is removed from her position within your church.

She revealed herself to be a craven, self-centered, shallow, sanctimonious, piece of un-Godly filth. Not only is she incapable of leading a congregation but she's also proven herself incapable of interacting with the world at large.
