having said that it's in the first mix / newest mix here but i don't think you'll care much for it because it's not about scenius it's about my imaginary world where everything is one big detroit continuum

After having the owl/ufo bass from 'You Want Me' running in my head for two days straight, I have to say Jackin is growing on me. I think the electro part turned me off initially, but the skippy beats, warpy owl bass, cheeky/cheesy samples, and blatant drugginess on some of these tracks is winning me over.

I think I like about half of those youtubes. Was vibing quite a bit to Away We Go earlier. A lot of the tunes I like sound a bit like slightly slower, slightly straighter equivalents to the garagey bits DJ Q plays. A lot of this stuff has an enjoyable effortless sort of feel to it. Might try and post more coherent thoughts later, but yeah I'm coming round to it a bit.

Also off-topic but TLG I enjoyed your mix (and other ones that you've posted in the Mixes For Download thread).

Seriously who the hell came up with the name? There's only one kind of jackin house. It's from Chicago and it existed two decades ago. And by jackin they really meant JACKIN. I don't hear any jack here.

ok i get it, this just sounds like a mersh version of stuff i already really like (old classic records, well rounded, julio bashmore, etc) w/ added bassline emphasis

my initial reaction is that this IS kind of like the same sort of blend i'm going for right now, but when the bassline is not interesting or the vocalist is not charismatic it is neither more nor less boring than when the same thing happens in yr average carl craig track

also that it's waaaaaay too slow

like in the carl flanagan track, it reminds me of this documentary or something i saw about "style" as applied to battle dancing (i don't know if it was about locking and popping or voguing or soul dance or what) and somebody was like "sometimes you watch someone dance and you wonder if they imagine what it's like for other people to look at them or if they don't give a shit about style"

that's how the "epic build" and "off-key-ness" of carl flanagan makes me feel, an undeserved victory lap around the fruity loops manual

if its LFO owls you want, that'd be Nick hannam's 'Homeless' or Cause & Affect's 'Don't like to do that' - not 'You want me' as astrochimp said

As with funky it's often played pitched up - though on some records (e.g. "You Want Me") the original speed works better in my opinion.

Yeah I think that's her. I like her vocal I'm but not so mad about the rest of the tune.

I love those the owl bass on those two, Benny, those are much better examples. The part of 'You Want Me' I've had stuck in my head is that eerie UFO/ghost sound that comes in at the beginning of the track, before the bassline, that then becomes more high-pitched and bird-like around 2:23 in that youtube clip.

really? thank you. i'm most of the proud of the "champion sound" bit at the beginning of the first blake baxter thing.

so am i deliberately misinterpreting aspects of the sound ... or rather am i ignoring (specifics of geography aside) that separates, say, standard bobbins and what rob might call predigested fact-ulum from the more vibrant funky and jackin scenes ... or would you just say i'm shoehorning everything into a frankendance sort of mush?

i'm really too old to follow developments in all continents and scenes but i wish i had kept up more w grime and funky now

i often get the same sense listening to some of this music as i do listening to herbert's "let's all make mistakes" and whatnot

apart from maybe b-grade grizzle 'come down' u will never want to hear any of it again

well my first listen was last night when I bunged all the tracks into vdj, notched up the tempo and mixed through them, so that probably helped. i generally don't listen to these sort of things as albums anyway, just collections of tracks to dj with. the only one i actively disliked was 'we are', 'sleep talk' seemed like a highlight.

just as an NB jclc, the 'jacking house' in that mix is the old-school chicago-style definition. this thread is about the birmingham, UK centred style of housey bass-driven garage with big nasty ring-filter sounds on the bassline

one of those extremely confusing bits of nomenclature, like the two quite different genres 'afrobeat' and 'afrobeats'
