So what's the deal, do I have to register with the Trib to even read it now? I had to do that last night with The Washingtonian, b/c I wanted to see their top 100 restaurants in D.C.

It only seems to be problem when you follow a direct link -- if you google the article, you should be able to access it through the search results.

I know it's bad, but I hardly ever follow local news unless it pertains to music/culture/food. Like I was kind of in the dark about the CPS issues (I mean, apart from a vague sense that things were fucked) until a woman in my yoga class said that she was going to be at a demonstration this week.
I felt a strange disconnect when I was at a family gathering right after Maggie Daley died and a bunch of my relatives were trading stories about the news and also about her life over the years and I was like "how the fuck do you know so much about Maggie Daley?" And I suppose part of it's because I was just a kid for the first few years of RMD's mayoral tenure, but I also feel like these are people who still get a daily Tribune and watch Ron Magers every night. Whereas I avoid TV news and read the NYT online.
― squicky chutzpah in the drug biz (jaymc), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 15:34 (eleven years ago) link
Right now, I'm subscribed to the Trib's newsfeed through iGoogle so when I go to Google, I see headlines. That's the main way I keep up with local news. Plus I watch Chicago Tonight every once in awhile.
iGoogle is going away in November, but I'll still probably check out headlines every now and then just to keep on top of things.
― ms. cookie (carl agatha), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 15:37 (eleven years ago) link
Not until Nov. 2013!
― squicky chutzpah in the drug biz (jaymc), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 15:42 (eleven years ago) link
That's a good idea to put the Trib feed on iGoogle, though -- I only have NYT and top Google News headlines.
― squicky chutzpah in the drug biz (jaymc), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 15:43 (eleven years ago) link
iGoogle going away kind of pisses me off, it was sooo useful when I was working at a place that had pretty strict web filtering going on. I could still check fb, read blog articles, etc without crossing the line.
― DX Dx DX (dan m), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 15:44 (eleven years ago) link
Oh! Nov. 2013? Heck, I'll probably be hooked into a neural interface that allows me to stream news directly into my brain by then.
I have news feeds from the Trib (Chicagoland and Business news), Chicago Defender, the Reader, NYT, Guardian US, and the BBC World. Used to have the Sun Times on there until they started putting everything behind a paywall.
― ms. cookie (carl agatha), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 15:48 (eleven years ago) link
I kind of love iGoogle, esp. for Gmail. Pretty much the only time I have to open up the full Gmail is if I need to send an attachment.
― squicky chutzpah in the drug biz (jaymc), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 15:50 (eleven years ago) link
And apparently you do have to actually google the article and open it from the search results page? I went to the Trib's main page, clicked through to Chicagoland, and then on the CTA story and it still blocked me! FU, Trib.

Lakeview COC is running a campaign to save the Lincoln bus if any of you #11 fans would be sad to see it go.
― ms. cookie (carl agatha), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 20:57 (eleven years ago) link
I don't have reason to take the Lincoln bus very often, but whenever I've wanted to, I've noticed that it's either already stopped running or that the next bus is in like a half hour.
― squicky chutzpah in the drug biz (jaymc), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 21:04 (eleven years ago) link
I take that bus a lot. I wish there was more frequent service (and I wish a lot of the buses had later service - stopping service at 8 pm on a weekend is straight nonsense), too.
― ms. cookie (carl agatha), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 21:15 (eleven years ago) link
It's the bus that takes me to and from bars. Guess I'm going to have to buy a car now and start drinking and driving.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 21:19 (eleven years ago) link
You should email the CTA and tell them that.
― ms. cookie (carl agatha), Wednesday, 22 August 2012 21:23 (eleven years ago) link
Don't really understand the gist of that grand cultural plan - what it means to achieve, where it gets the money from - but I think the city would be better served putting all that effort into bettering the CTA, and then, fine, hanging some art on the trains and buses and stuff.

There were people all over the Loop handing out the weirdest free crap today. Sabra humus and pita chips! Yogurt! (I don't want free yogurt from a man with a bag full of yogurt slung across his back!) Southwest three cheese Shake-n-bake!
I got ambushed by the Shake-n-bake guy as I was leaving my building and accepted the product and I'm totally going to make it. It comes in a ziploc bag with half breadcrumbs and half actual cheese that miraculously does not need refrigeration. WHO DARES TO COME OVER FOR SOUTHWEST THREE CHEESE SHAKE-N-BAKE????
― ms. cookie (carl agatha), Thursday, 23 August 2012 00:56 (eleven years ago) link
I'm sorry! It's not Shake-n-bake! It's some new product called "Fresh Take," which given that it is magical non-refrigerated cheese is kind of hilarious. I'm still going to coat some kind of meat with it.

― these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 August 2012 14:53 (eleven years ago) link
I'm not sure where else to put this, so I will put it here.
I had a super weird dream last night that I was related by marriage to John Tesh, and he had suffered a brutal rape (which I did not see) on an airplane and the whole world was after the guy who did it. It was like this huge international media thing, and John Tesh was sort of enjoying the publicity, but lamenting the fact that he had to be brutally raped in order to have this sort of attention. He was like "what about my music? What about 7th Heaven? Was that worth nothing to these people? I had to be attacked by that animal in order to be recognized?"
That's all I remember. He knew who had done it, and he knew that once that guy was found, he (John Tesh) wouldn't get as much attention, so he just told me. It was a guy named Gary Pflower.

Phew. I just finished writing something for work that is probably the longest thing I've written in a few years (about 1,300 words). It discusses Adele, Justin Bieber, Amanda Hocking, E.L. James, Frank Ocean, Kate Upton, Radiohead, Louis C.K., Etsy, and Tavi Gevinson.
