I don't think she's ever really made a bad album.

I fuck with that snippet.

centibutt hz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 00:47 (eleven years ago) link

Cookbook has that great Apache version

┐(´ー`)┌ (sic), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 00:53 (eleven years ago) link

The Cookbook is better than This Ain't A Test and about as good as Under Construction imo

some dude, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 02:33 (eleven years ago) link

oh helllllllll no. That album had it's moments for sure but it was a mess overall. I still don't understand how peeps around here underrate Under Construction so much.

Hope what happens after that snippet ends includes four on the floor.

Eric H., Tuesday, 11 September 2012 02:42 (eleven years ago) link

the last 3 albums are all fine, just on a lower tier than the first 3 imo. i'm probably a little tough on Under Construction but it was very overrated at the time and is more singles+filler-ish than its predecessors

some dude, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 02:45 (eleven years ago) link

With Missy, like Erykah, the album I tend to rate the lowest now in retrospect is the debut.

Eric H., Tuesday, 11 September 2012 02:46 (eleven years ago) link

it was very overrated at the time and is more singles+filler-ish than its predecessors

otm. The debut and This is Not a Test! get the most play these days.

This Is Not A Test only avoids that fate because its singles sound like filler.

lol seriously

some dude, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 02:51 (eleven years ago) link

i kind of don't like this but i'm happy that it doesn't have those timbaland drums on it

No one is ever as uncool as they are a decade after their peak.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 06:48 (eleven years ago) link

Other ways in which ILM is useful: there are a bunch of dudes that, if they don't like a record, it's almost guaranteed that I will.

Whether or not the new album is good or bad I'm overwhelmed with happiness that she's back making music

being all over under construction work it, you mean

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 10:58 (eleven years ago) link

I remember Rollie Pemberton being all down on Under Construction in the worst possible way.

It was a bad time for the Empire ILX.

Tim F, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 11:05 (eleven years ago) link

No one is ever as uncool as they are a decade after their peak.

Except for Tom Waits and a bunch of other folks.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 13:01 (eleven years ago) link

it true its hard to pick a precise moment of peak tom waits uncoolness

cookbook had some jams

lag∞n, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 13:11 (eleven years ago) link

tho departing from the 100% tim production model seemed kinda whats the point

lag∞n, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 13:15 (eleven years ago) link

i will rep for cookbook, if only for "can't stop".

40oz of tears (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 16:38 (eleven years ago) link

"Meltdown" is the only one besides "Lose Control" whose memory I can still summon.

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 20:53 (eleven years ago) link

you don't remember "We Run This"?

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 21:01 (eleven years ago) link

Under Construction is probably my favorite album of hers. The Cookbook isn't amazing, but it isn't bad, there's way too many good songs on it.

How is her health?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 21:50 (eleven years ago) link

when she revealed the Graves disease a few months ago it sounded like her condition had improved to the point that she was all good to resume her career

"9th Inning" is the lesser of the two but still a lot better than I expected from that clip.

These songs will sound so massive on club speakers.

tuomas without a nose ring (The Reverend), Monday, 17 September 2012 23:05 (eleven years ago) link

she sounds like jay on 9th inning

let's get the banned back together (schlump), Monday, 17 September 2012 23:19 (eleven years ago) link

i like both of these. 9th inning does sound way better & triple threat is pretty cool. kinda funny to see them doing the houston thing (pimp c quoting, still tippin nodding) but it sounds pretty unique

instafapper (J0rdan S.), Monday, 17 September 2012 23:23 (eleven years ago) link

Gahhh, am at work and can't hear these yet. So excited.

some white dude (Turangalila), Monday, 17 September 2012 23:28 (eleven years ago) link

xp keep in mind that Timbo produced the song he quotes!

tuomas without a nose ring (The Reverend), Monday, 17 September 2012 23:39 (eleven years ago) link

Triple Threat is good. 9th Inning, not so good.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 00:08 (eleven years ago) link

I'm not exactly blown away by either of these, but if you have a problem with them you're a fucking asshole

centibutt hz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 00:59 (eleven years ago) link

goddamn, Triple Threat

fadanuf4erybody, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 01:04 (eleven years ago) link

Still better than either of the 2012 singles, so I consider it a win.

it's a little long and repetitive but it's at least in the BPM range of a Missy song i'd want to listen to, unlike "WTF"

A big shout out goes to the lamb chops, thos lamb chops (ulysses), Friday, 27 January 2017 17:25 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, it feels like she's trying too hard to make something on-trend instead of something reflective of her artistic persona.

Get Me Bodied (Extended Mix), Friday, 27 January 2017 21:30 (seven years ago) link

Visuals great, verses aren't bad I think but the hook is sooooo boring that it's hard to get motivated to listen to it again to where the details of what Missy is doing would actually sink in and stick with me.

imagine if Missy released that remix as the official version

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 3 February 2017 19:25 (seven years ago) link

right? granted i wish that version had a little more space in it, but i would love for Missy to make a Yeezus-esque record with best producers from the edges of dance music.

Supposedly she was working with MikeQ a few years back

Get Me Bodied (Extended Mix), Sunday, 5 February 2017 03:59 (seven years ago) link

dig the original, remix loses the tension / restraint & scribbles all over the vocals

massaman gai, Sunday, 5 February 2017 12:18 (seven years ago) link

Listening to Supa Dupa Fly this afternoon (which came out 20 years ago!) and it still sounds so good, both the songs and the production. For all her great singles and songwriting, I don't think she ever made a better album -- but that's not a knock, it's just that I love SDF so much.

http://www.factmag.com/2017/01/27/missy-elliott-im-better-interview/

Good interview.

Who else have you been working with?

Timbaland, of course, and then the guy Lamb. I kinda keep my circle small because there’s not a lot of people who think crazy or weird like Missy. I’m sure there is, but I haven’t ran across ones that think weird like me. When it comes to working with outside producers, it’s very small.
