absolutely adored Humanity Has Declined (Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita), which just finished. on the surface it seems like some ubertwee fairytale, but this is undercut with unsettling black humour & social satire. try the first episode, by the end you'll be thinking "what the fuck did i just watch". its also one of a bunch of Japanese speculative fiction that i've come across recently that could be described as having a "cheerful dystopia" setting, which i can't get enough of.

Space Dandy has been really inconsistent, some bits are funny and other bits are painfully unfunny and drag on forever. Some really nice animation bits tho.

think i've written about him before, Hiroyasu Ishida has a new short film out and it's just as good as his previous work. influenced by Miyazaki and Tezuka but has his own style, only in his 20s but already being seen as a star of the future.

Oh cool, I'll have to keep an eye on him!

It's Korean, so technically not part of the "anime" industry if you want to be super anal about it, but has anyone seen the American DVD of Aachi & Ssipak? I've been waiting for a legit release for years, but it looks like the Stateside distributor fucked it up in ways that I thought people had stopped doing in the early 2000's- it's recut, the translated script was rewritten and dubbed into English by the guys responsible for some shitty-looking Flash cartoon called "Dick Figures," and the soundtrack was replaced with third-stringers from the Mad Decent roster (seriously, nobody's even credited by name outside of producer/engineer Kevin Seaton, it's just "Mad Decent"). The original version of the film still isn't available legally.

I've been watching Urusei Yatsura and so far my favorite episode is the 2nd part of ep 6, "Hey, Hey It's a Little Demon". Like most episodes it is about things getting progressively worse until they hit a disastrous climax. In this case a demon (whether deriving from Western or Eastern religion is debated in one part) has appeared through a mirror and hangs around long enough to make life a literal hell for the family. There is an amazing jump cut near the end where a priest opens a gate to the 4th dimension and the demon cackles while multiplying into infinite trails, the soundtrack full of abstract reverberating feedback. Suddenly it cuts to an establishing shot outside the house complete with cheery sitcom music. It's a perfect moment that captures the weird humor of the series.

Yup, just found out about that when I watched Bakuman. Apparently there's a thing called Seiyuu Otaku in Japan, and they have ridiculous devotion to their favorite VAs and they get really crazy whenever it's about their favorite VA's purity and lovelife. If I remember correctly, it gets to a point where it can ruin the VA's voice acting career (especially if they're super popular).

That's not exclusive to VA's, but the whole Idol industry. It's usually in the Idol's contracts that they're forbidden from having relationships because the ruins their "pure" image.

judging by his entertainment interests i'd say there's at least a 60% chance bin laden was a redditor
