All caps for the ultra-serious delivery of this line by Interpol singer: "LOVE IS IN THE KITCHEN WITH A CULINARY EYE/SHE'S COOKING SOMETHING GOOD/I THINK I'M SMART ENOUGH TO TRY"

Sorry if I misquoted, but HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! HA HA HA HA HA HA! At least they have sense enough to look nice.

bren, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 17:14 (twenty years ago) link

maybe it was "I can really relate to hitler?"

UGH. That's far worse. especially with the question mark.

I tell people I'm related to Aldolf Loos but nobody seems impressed.

I'm not though.

Dammit. I'm not buying you a drink ever again.

I bet they pay very little money for their vintage clothes and look very nice, while many bands in nyc that look like dirtbags are wearing a combination of free Diesel and Levis clothes as well as the latest scumbag-chic high-fashion designs.

I was about to say. I think the elevated "trash" pedestal that fashion trends are obsequious to these days kinda supports this.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 17:22 (twenty years ago) link

I didn't even know that they were hated, although the backlash was obviously inevitable.
Therefore, I have no idea why they are so bad and hated, although I can take a stab at it, 1) they sound so much like Joy Division (good or bad depending on the person judging), 2) they were critically lauded (good or bad depending on the person judging), 3) Pitchfork loves them (good or bad depending on the person judging).

There, I've just named three reasons why they are bad and hated AND three reasons why they are good and loved.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 17:22 (twenty years ago) link

there was a backlash when the record came out when hipsters were like "they suck" then there was a backlash backlash when critics were like "I actually like them"

this thread comes at a time where I didn't think many people were arguing about them. isn't there some new polarizing act to go from 0-60mph really fast? We already did the rapture. What band is appearing on talk shows and in the press now that is worth fighting about?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 17:29 (twenty years ago) link

Wolf Eyes "Stabbed In The Face b/w Rat Floods / Stabbed II" 12" (different than Panicsville split) has been sent to the plant, and will be released by Sub Pop Records in late April. The track is from the upcoming Wolf Eyes album "Burned Mind". CD to be released by Sub Pop Records. LP version on Hanson Records / American Tapes.

those sell outs! i bet they sound like the shins now.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 17:37 (twenty years ago) link

Wolf Eyes are totally exploiting me to buy crappy vinyl and CDRs.

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 17:47 (twenty years ago) link

when I see wolf eyes bills covering every square inch of every construction site and scaffold in nyc, then we'll talk!

Interpol sounds so little like the bands everyone compares them to it's shocking.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:37 (twenty years ago) link

well, it depends on what song you are talking about. they rip off many different people.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:39 (twenty years ago) link

Enough that they don't sound too much like any one.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:40 (twenty years ago) link

"Interpol sounds like My Dad Is Dead."
-© hstencil 2002 and never has he been more accurate

I don't mind Interpol, they're pretty tame all things considered.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:41 (twenty years ago) link

i'd rather listen to interpol than the darkness.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:42 (twenty years ago) link

they are not obviously super original, but I enjoy Interpol. I am not all that hip.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:43 (twenty years ago) link

they sound like music that self important liberal arts majors going nowhere listen to!

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:43 (twenty years ago) link

i mean, if there were a gun to my head i would pick interpol over the darkness. and heck, the darkness might be the more original band. they don't sound enough like one band that i immediately think of better music that i've heard before. Interpol are more blatant. they have a song that sounds like the smiths and their chameleons one and their kitchens of distiction one, etc.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:45 (twenty years ago) link

they sound like music that self important liberal arts majors going nowhere listen to!

as a self important liberal arts major i can confirm this is true.

Your Reasons Why They Are So Bad And Hated:

debut is a gold record. seemed to have been very focused. have picked other bands to support, some who aren't signed or who are so signed it's ridiculous, just based apparently on whose music they enjoy. will probably handle "backlash" too. what assholes

duke politburo, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 19:01 (twenty years ago) link

they handle'd the backlash didn't they? Considering the backlash was a) 2 years ago and b) mostly just record-dorks complaining about their clothes and their influences. Judging from countless Friendster profiles(the best way, currently, to measure a bands relative fame) they are quite popular.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 19:10 (twenty years ago) link

How sweet.

duke putin, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 19:56 (twenty years ago) link

self-important liberal arts majors listen more obscure music than Interpol....Interpol is a good derivative pop band with handful of pretty great songs...also, to your original post, who cares if they listened (or still listen to) Blink 182? Isn't that natural for alot of indie type kids to start that way and move towards more obscure stuff?

(disclaimer: also, I am not meaning to say that this is in anyway to represent a move towards self-betterment or any type of improvement over listening to more popular stuff)....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 19:58 (twenty years ago) link

YOU CONFOUND THE INDIE DIALECTIC? DEMON!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 20:01 (twenty years ago) link

Fuck, did we just become a Dio album cover?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 20:01 (twenty years ago) link

YAY! My life's work is now accomplished! (I think we're the Holy Diver cover too, which is the best Dio album!)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 20:15 (twenty years ago) link

the funny thing about what's natural for indie kids is after they move towards more obscure stuff, they move back to less obscure stuff and say things like "no, I REALLY like Neil Diamond."

10pts to whomever knows where that Neil Diamond line comes from...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 20:16 (twenty years ago) link

I like Interpol. They have a leg up on a lot of the ADD-riddled antisocial peformance artists/bands championed in many a thread on ILM, but then again, I like actual songs more than pseudo-shocking noise these days...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 20:19 (twenty years ago) link

how cute

ned ragggettt, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 20:22 (twenty years ago) link

I saw them, in milwaukee, once. well, I saw half a song, by them, in milwaukee, once. I was tired and I think they were boring and I left. they were in the bar, beforehand, and I was thinking "haha, who are these guys?"

I think you guys overestimated the indie douchebags. Look at all the friendster profiles for photo majors in my area and you see:

INTERPOL, THE VU, SONIC YOUTH, THE STROKES, PEACHES, THE RAPTURE, HOT HOT HEAT

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:01 (twenty years ago) link

I think this thread proves that Interpol aren't good OR bad enough to be hated properly.

Subject: Franz Ferdinand!! (soo rockin!)

Body: Ok, so my good friend turned me onto this new band Franz Ferdinand. And may I say... freakin' AWESOME!! It has been so long since I heard songs sooo good and sooo rockin' that I have to blast it and actually jump around and dance and shake my booty! Seriously, this band rocks, and I mean that cool old fashioned funk edgey raw type of rock, with the catchiest hooks, but pure music all the way thru. An album that will make your head bop and foot tap involuntarily, for sure. Everyone should run out and buy it NOW!! You will NOT be dissappointed!

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:03 (twenty years ago) link

i dont know, "pure music" sounds pretty good to me. what more do you want?

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:20 (twenty years ago) link

Jon, you should move to Alaska. I guarantee you your local online communities will not have those bands in their profiles.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:21 (twenty years ago) link

yeah what a bitch. she doesn't deserve to be on friendster.

(xposts)

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:21 (twenty years ago) link

oh yeah, Franz Ferdinand is the band this time. I've only heard 1 song by them, which is one less then what I've head from Interpol. Though I've heard the Morgan Geist remix, and it has some sexy production as usual. We've already had FF threads. Let's please have more bands that sound more and more like the Monochrome Set. Not that FF do, from what I've heard, but they're namechecked. The Monochrome Set is definately my favorite band in 2004.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:25 (twenty years ago) link

I can't wait for the next hot indie band that rips off Eat or the New Fast Automatic Daffodils or another overlooked/forgotten band from the early 90s.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:32 (twenty years ago) link

(or can't wait until Chunklet puts together a side-splitting "how to be a hot indie band in the new millenium" check list which includes all of the above)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:33 (twenty years ago) link

Maybe they're hated 'cause the one guy looks like Crispin Glover in "Willard."

I can never listen to the album, because it's just too slow and samey, but when "Obstacle 1" comes on the radio, I always mentally remark on what a great song it is. (Especially when it kicks into that whole final section that I always forget is coming.)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:40 (twenty years ago) link

If I weren't so busy (i.e. fucking lazy) I'd start a Madchester-sounding band here in NYC, spend a couple years getting somewhat decent, and then make millions.

I heard that Interpol's producer wrote the entire album. That's the rumor at least.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:47 (twenty years ago) link

interpol had many many years of playing at Brownies to write all those songs.

If you listen to !!! and the Rapture at the same time you kind of have a madchester band.

In any case, if you do start said band, I'll produce it.

here goes for me. i've asked my friends about this but they don't hear it. interpole actually hurt my ears. not like facetious, 'they're so bad they hurt' but something, i'm thinking the way the cymbals were recorded, just kills my ears. it's actually painful. it's that high-end eee-eee-eee sound, the ride and the crashes, way up in the mix. anyone else?

jergins, Friday, 28 January 2005 23:38 (nineteen years ago) link

I like Interpol. I bought tickets to go see them in March. Yes, I paid, like a civilian. I've heard they're boring live, but that's okay, because the show's at Radio City Music Hall, which has a great sound system and comfortable chairs. I saw Sigur Ros there and had a really good time.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Friday, 28 January 2005 23:50 (nineteen years ago) link

i saw them at a festival in 2003 and they were good. I was pretty tired at the time though.

Interpol: Name Your Reasons Why They Are So Bad And Hated

One decent track (Obstacle #1) in two albums would seem to be far and away enough reason. Ifankyew.

nine years pass...

I think it is ridiculous that so many people talk about them being well dressed. And you think the shit they were is expensive? I don't know, I haven't seen them in a while, but just because someone is wearing a jacket, doesn't mean that they are well dressed or that they spent a lot of money. You can find a black jacket for $.99 at a thrift store. I think they look like they are playing dress up in a poor grandfather's closet.

It's one of those ~deep mysteries of life~, isn't it?

How some guys can put on a £.99p jacket or a £2000 suit, and look like... Interpol.

And yet *you* could put the same clothes, and just look like a guy in a cheap suit.

Masculine beauty, how does it work. I dunno; ~ItsAMystery.gif~
