yeah, i think you mean the same one i think of as the "cabaret" one.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:21 (twenty years ago) link

west coast emo >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> east coast (sorry Colin).

no mention of struggle yet either. neat guitar player ;)

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:21 (twenty years ago) link

but thinking of Gravity/San Diego bands, Clikitat were always my favorites.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:22 (twenty years ago) link

east coast had ASSFACTOR 4, perhaps the greatest band in this genre.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:22 (twenty years ago) link

the problem with clikitat ikatowa (and lots of the 2nd wavers) is that their records always sounded like shit compared to their live shows. i think jess always mentions their live record.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:23 (twenty years ago) link

sadly i never saw clikitat live. what do you mean by 2nd wave? is the first wave like Three Mile Pilot and John Reis, etc?

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:26 (twenty years ago) link

Yo, was where was Universal Order of Armageddon actually from? I just fired up the Born Against split again and this shit is pretty DOPE! The 12" on Gravity seems to remind me a lot more of The Convocation of... and The Great Unraveling.

BICICLETA EMOCIONAL!!! (Jon Williams) (ex machina), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:26 (twenty years ago) link

baltimore, methinks.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:27 (twenty years ago) link

in san diego emo circles:
1st wave = 89-92
2nd wave = 93-95

"leave" is the best heroin song.

three mile pilot, rftc, drive like jehu were always "indie rock", never "emo" (ie, they didn't play the che cafe every thursday).

heavy vegetable did play the TGs though.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:28 (twenty years ago) link

i guess i just got confused because i dont think of heroin or clickitat as emo -- but you must mean emo in the orignal sense of Rites Of Spring, etc.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:29 (twenty years ago) link

no, gygax, 'with no name' is the best heroin song.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:29 (twenty years ago) link

emo in the "late 80s/early 90s post-hardcore metal/noise with screaming vox" sense.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:33 (twenty years ago) link

I played an Unbroken record at the wrong speed last night and I just thought they were doing sludge metal until like 2 minutes in.

BICICLETA EMOCIONAL!!! (Jon Williams) (ex machina), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:34 (twenty years ago) link

i gotchya and the part in "" fits how i place the Gravity scene -- putting the art back into the threadbare beast called hardcore (or at least more than threadbare by then).

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:35 (twenty years ago) link

Universal Order = Severna Park/Baltimore, Maryland.

I forgive you, gygax, because I know you're wrong.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:48 (twenty years ago) link

BICICLETA EMOCIONAL!!! (Jon Williams) (ex machina), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:49 (twenty years ago) link

BICICLETA EMOCIONAL!!! (Jon Williams) (ex machina), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:50 (twenty years ago) link

colin, send me your tapes or whatever.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:52 (twenty years ago) link

Yea, when's the Hated CD discography coming out????????

BICICLETA EMOCIONAL!!! (Jon Williams) (ex machina), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:52 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, while you're sending people hated stuff...

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:53 (twenty years ago) link

yeah the studio recordings of those clikitat songs sound like a pick-up band playing them. (also, shitty recording.) that live album is nicely atmopheric (lots of space which is an underrated virtue with this sort of thing), and the drumming on, say, "8 hours of drama", doesn't sound like popcorn popping.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:56 (twenty years ago) link

as nice as colin is, i somehow doubt it will top the relevance of the first 2 dag nasty records. plus, i hate reserving judgement on these "the band that time forgot!" reissues that come out 15-20 years later. THERE IS A REASON THAT THEY WERE FORGOTTEN! <= j/k.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:57 (twenty years ago) link

three hundred and thirty seven "the hated" fans can't be wrong! ;-)

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:58 (twenty years ago) link

re: Antioch Arrow. "Gems Of Masochism" got a reissue through Three One G recently... I like that record. I don't think it's the "wrong" album, actually.. just different. Although I do think the "Lady Is A Cat/In Love With Jetts/Plus Extra" CD rocks a lot more.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:58 (twenty years ago) link

haha yeah i've already seen the "gems of masochism" reissue in the used bins at a couple stores (it's not a bad record, really.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:01 (twenty years ago) link

THERE IS A REASON THAT THEY WERE FORGOTTEN!

Because all of their records are out of print?

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:02 (twenty years ago) link

As i just pointed out, Three One G just reissued "Gems of Masochism", and I think Gravity still presses the other Antioch Arrow records.. in fact, they recently repressed a good chunk of their catalog, me thinks.

Actually, my favorite Antioch Arrow song is "Paper Moshay" off "Gems"... they're still the only band to properly fuse the Rozz Williams-over-Rock-Chaos thing very well on that record.. if only the rest of the album was like that, but still, yeah, great record. The earlier ones are powerhouses but get a bit grating and samey after a while, whereas i'm more likely to listen to "Gems" time after time.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:05 (twenty years ago) link

(sorry, Ian, thought you were talking about Antioch Arrow)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:05 (twenty years ago) link

they're still the only band to properly fuse the Rozz Williams-over-Rock-Chaos thing very well on that record

well, heh, aside from Only Theatre Of Pain of course... minus the chaos.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:06 (twenty years ago) link

Wasn't nearly all of Gravity's catalog out of print for years or something? Didn't that dude have a junk problem?

BICICLETA EMOCIONAL!!! (Jon Williams) (ex machina), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:07 (twenty years ago) link

let's not forget that the dude from portraits of past is/was into meth & wanted by the cops!

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:08 (twenty years ago) link

Don't know what Tonie's up to and don't care, really. I don't think Vermin Scum is active -- doesn't matter, it's not like Tonie ever paid anybody or kept anything in print or even checked to make sure things were mastered at the right speed; he just stole the name and the checks while one of us was having substance problems. There are some differences (as to format, song selection, which takes to use) on the anthology, but everything is mixed and ready for the decisions to be (FINALLY) made. We've been stung by giving out tapes before, but truly devoted people should e-mail me.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 1 March 2004 23:34 (twenty years ago) link

And I do humbly believe that the Hated really were all that.

donut bitch is otm about "paper moshay." antioch arrow put on one of the best shows i saw in my high school years, playing at an elks lodge, no stage, no more than 30 people attending 5 feet away from the band (10 years before Lightning Bolt was doing it). the singer was this tiny skinny guy who somehow ended up reminding me of David Lee Roth with his histrionics. great show.

OH IRONEE

I'm now ripping through the Antioch Arrow stuff.

I'm trying to I.D. those four bonus live cuts on the In Love With Jetts Plus WAU CD... The first is "Antioch Gold (For You)" and the fourth one is "Chaos vs. Cosmos". I can't figure out the two in between. Also still trying to figure out if those live recordings are at a wrong slower speed, or the singer had gotten a Nick Cave larynx operation. Anyone know what those last four live tracks are?

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Monday, 2 March 2009 00:58 (fifteen years ago) link

I tried searching for this thread a few times with variations on "gothed-out hardcore".

Anyway, Angel Hair = <3

Sundar, Monday, 2 March 2009 01:05 (fifteen years ago) link

I need to listen to the Angelhair CD again... I'm glad I never sold off those VSS releases.. they sound a lot better on revisit than I expected.

anyway, I think those four live AA cuts are
Antioch Gold (For You)
The Puppy Love
Space Age
Chaos vs. Cosmos

and I found this live Antioch Arrow footage from 1992-1993 or so.

Elvis wish he had shakier legs

Put on VSS' Nervous Circuits two days ago on a drive down the I-5 and it still sounded so, so good.

bear, bear, bear, Monday, 2 March 2009 05:33 (fifteen years ago) link

so did that Hated discography CD ever come out? I saw them once before Colin, once after, great both times. Used to have the 1st 7" and the tape but stupidly sold them years ago. I'd love to have that stuff on CD especially if as noted above things were mastered at the wrong speed.

sleeve, Monday, 2 March 2009 16:23 (fifteen years ago) link

also, search the 1st two UOA 7" singles.

is it even still possible to track down later UOA stuff or Clikitat without paying big bucks on eBay?

sleeve, Monday, 2 March 2009 16:24 (fifteen years ago) link

http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Order-Armageddon/dp/B00000372U

If you don't mind CD, as far as UOA is concerned. Not really big bucks.

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Monday, 2 March 2009 16:51 (fifteen years ago) link

http://www.amazon.com/Great-Unraveling/dp/B00000373Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1236012692&sr=1-1

This is the better CD, IMHO. And seems to be creeping up as collector's item.

I saw Great Unraveling once. They were amazing, although the singer tried really hard to convince self that nobody was there to see his band and seemed to look for an excuse to not play. Never saw UOA.

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Monday, 2 March 2009 16:53 (fifteen years ago) link

thanx Mackro. I saw UoA play for free once (1994?) in Eugene's downtown market square, they were really good and had these awesome low-volume tape loops running in between the songs.

search heroin's discography cd, containing the best hardcore (punk) record of the 90s. (followed closely by born against's patriotic hymns for children.

search -everything- on gravity records, but esp. the first antioch arrow 12", the angel hair discography CD, the mighty clikitat ikatowi's live CD, the VSS's nervous circuits, the born against/universal order of armageddon split 7", the uoa dub 12", the men's recovery project 7".

non-gravity: the universal order of armageddon and great unravelling 12"s on kill rock stars, i guess early unwound counts here, the monorchid, the first rye coalition album.

destroy: humorless/style-less political hardcore inna ebullition stylee, former spazz-core bands copping bowie moves (the rapture, get hustle, etc.), the locust and all who sail her stillborn waters.
