not really feeling the demos for either tbh. it's a disappointing business.

I like the PES demo. The FIFA one doesn't do anything for me at all, but I thought last year's FIFA was absolutely joyless. I play offline so Konami's issues with online don't bother me, and EA's online strengths are irrelevant.

started playing 13 in the be a player mode. so painful. it seriously takes like 5-10 minutes of boring, irrelevant simming between matches just to play again. EA games menus/load times are so fucking awful these days. they shouldn't be allowed to ship bullshit like this. similar issues with nhl 13 based on the small amt of time i've spent with it.

I like Geoff. I only play online where the injuries take about thirty seconds to run off so he just pops up to reassure me that everything is going to be ok. I've enjoyed FIFA 13 so far - seems a little faster and possibly less realistic in some ways but lots of fun.

are we all getting older or are people ignoring this year's football releases?

i couldn't bear either demo. it is the first time in a decade i haven't bought a new fifa or pes, or madden for that matter.

I play the new PES almost every day. The improvement in ball physics and AI is huge, and it differentiates between good and bad teams quite well. I like the new FIFA too, but it doesn't differentiate as well nor have as good computer controlled AI. If I played online I'm sure I'd play FIFA, but I don't so the AI is crucial.

picked up FIFA 14 for the 360. how do you get your man to jump for a header? the AI does it all the time and it's killing me on corner kicks. Hull Tiger City will not be denied.

From memory, press B and a direction and you should head it out. Try to change to the appropriate player with the left bumper a fraction of a second beforehand.

yeah ok, thanks. i'm having better luck now, dunno what i was thinking. got Hull City two wins in their first two matches. playing ten minute halfs. not a lot of corner kicks so far, not much crossing, most of the games have been played from the middle.

this scouting stuff is getting tedious. i just want to overpay on the transfer market tbh.

Half-tempted by the World Cup edition of Fifa but €40 is too much for what is mostly the same game with some extra international teams.

I bought FIFA 13 a year after everyone else and couldn't get on with it. I think I'm done with football games - the endless tweaking to someone's idea of the perfect rendition of the beautiful game has taken all of the fun out of it.

I think graphical improvements have made games look worse - like a cartoony FIFA 10 Messi looks more like Messi than a 2014 1080p Messi_HD coz you can see all the things that aren't quite right. Players also feel kind of detached from their environments - like in those driving games where the cars feel pivoted on a central vertical axis.

The next-gen FIFA 15 demo is very good

the ball control feels a lot more variable and realistic, and dribbles with scampering technique pixies like Silva and Sterling feel v different this year

the graphics still aren't remotely impressive compared with e.g. the 2K Sports stuff though, sort of embarrassing how uniformly textured and waxwork the players look

starting to feel an urge to pick up FIFA 15 - 4 years after getting off the wagon

on the fence about whether this actually good or not

seem to endure >5 immaculate no-look AI backheel through balls, a patently ridiculous penalty/red card and at least one serious injury every single fuckin match

also, a player with three years left on his deal saying "even though I want to leave you can still select me for the team if you want" and not being able to batter him

The PES demo blows the FIFA one out of the water. I'm sure I'll once again end up owning both at some point, but PES looks like where I'll start this year.

think the thing in FIFA where two balls get on the pitch and you get to wait for someone to toepoke the second one out of play at a glacial pace before you take a throw-in might be the worst feature that's ever been intentionally coded into a video game ever

Picked up PES. Best football AI I've ever seen. Not perfect, but they'll at least try to play.

or a sign that these games have been str8 garbage for at least a couple years now. EZ has me wanting to try a demo again there at least.

try the PES demo. It's not perfect or anything, but it's fun and the AI doesn't make you want to throw your controller across the room.

Went PES this year; setting up the real teams is a ballache for the 30 minutes it takes, but it's much funner to move the ball around than in FIFA, with its beach ball passing and seemingly horrendously botched new set piece system

friend is trying to drag me back in. i basically quit this shit entirely maybe 3 years ago when both pes and fifa were disgraceful. but were still getting great reviews of course. can we get some ethics in games journalism, please.

Why are these things a) so fucking hard to satisfactorily play? and b) so long-winded to even set up a match? Like in a world where the Fifa games are literally less user-friendly than Football Manager what is the fucking point?

Plunged back into FIFA after a 5 year break - yep, its slow and grinding. I was tempted to go for PES but the lack of real names/clubs seemed too much of turn-off
