Please kill me now. Spent all weekend building furniture, still going...

It's just not NOT worth it, but what choice do I have????

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Sunday, 21 September 2003 19:28 (twenty years ago) link

Dud, because they fucking refuse to come anywhere around here, those damn Nordic bastards. I'm not about to fucking drive out all the way to Houston, damn it, just to get some furniture, because we've got plenty of furniture stores within a reasonable distance. Granted, they're traditional furniture stores without an ounce of whismy or fun, sure, but still it's more reasonable driving 10 - 20 minutes to get to a furniture store than it is to drive about 2 or 3 hours to get to one.

Sorry, there. It just gets very, very tiring living in a location where all the big chain stores are from local or regional chains(hello, H-E-B!) and so many stores I keep on hearing about are nowhere near me. What I wouldn't give to have a large music store somewhere close by, for example. But I digress. Heh.

Legendary Nothingness (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 21 September 2003 19:44 (twenty years ago) link

I like IKEA even though it took me two goes to get their very simple bookcases right. Looking round the room I can see 10 things from there and I'm probably missing some. Nobody on this thread - not even Ed - has yet mentioned Kopparberg PEAR CIDER I notice.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 21 September 2003 19:53 (twenty years ago) link

a new sweden shop pleasure? i generally go straight for the skando spirits in the booze section but maybe this is worth a look.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 21 September 2003 19:56 (twenty years ago) link

It's very very very sweet, sweeter than most alcopops even, but tasty and deceptively strong - the Croydon shop either seems to have crates over it or none at all. It's also nothing like the proper farmhouse perry I've had but is a useful approximation to the ruin generator you get at Glastonbury.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 21 September 2003 19:59 (twenty years ago) link

CLASSIC

(but what of Todd Oldham at Target?)

Re: assembled v. DIY furniture-

2 different ballgames. Are you looking for craftsmanship, and the price that comes with it, or functionality, pure and simple? At this stage in my life, decent design, affordability, and DIY assembly outstrip brilliant design, excellent materials, craftsmanship and the attendant premium. Someone said they had "better things to do with [their] time" than put furniture together. Alright, I hope those better things include work...so you can pay for my Eames lounge!

Lewis Carnelian (Grandin), Sunday, 21 September 2003 20:19 (twenty years ago) link

8 hours to the nearest IKEA to me. :(

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 21 September 2003 20:36 (twenty years ago) link

that's about how long it takes to get round the nearest ikea to me

Ed (dali), Sunday, 21 September 2003 20:41 (twenty years ago) link

A new Ikea recently opened in Melbourne (third one here now?) and it's 5 minutes walk from my work - hurray! But boooo for what it does to my wallet. I got the most brilliant huge floor cushion the other day with a velvety furry red cover. Lovely.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 21 September 2003 21:58 (twenty years ago) link

I honestly don't recall ever having been to an IKEA.

That said, I have a collander that is the shit and ez to clean, and one of those 4x5 bookshelves full of books and trophies and such.

Tres chic.

ModJ, Sunday, 21 September 2003 22:48 (twenty years ago) link

I don't mind it, although some of their stuff looks so disgustingly cheap it's awful! So far the only place we have seen a sofa that we really like is in Ikea, so it's not all bad though. Not, I might add, those awful £100-150 jobs that are just hideous!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 22 September 2003 11:11 (twenty years ago) link

I like IKEA because they named a cd shelf after my boyfriend's fanzine!

I own: 3 bookshelves, 4 cd shelves, 1 sofa, 1 coffeetable from IKEA.

Hanna (Hanna), Monday, 22 September 2003 11:20 (twenty years ago) link

I LOVE building Ikea furniture. However the bed I bought from them three / four years ago is now completely fucked and being replaced (aaahh John Lewis - the other man in my life).

j0e (j0e), Monday, 22 September 2003 11:26 (twenty years ago) link

Building IKEA furniture = k-classic
IKEA shelves and storage thingies = great
Not having a car = k-suxor
The IKEA sofa in my flat = arse on a plate

I was thinking about getting this set for our newly enclosed patio enclosure. Shouldn't there be cushions that come with it?

I am fearful of building such a thing, because we "built" the dresser in our room rather hurriedly and now it is splintering and buckling and falling apart.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I really regret all of our mismatched wood tones. Oh well.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Ikea furniture isn't really the kind you have for life, is it?

...Is it?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:02 (nineteen years ago) link

How long ya planning on living?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:04 (nineteen years ago) link

I was thinking about getting this set for our newly enclosed patio enclosure. Shouldn't there be cushions that come with it?

That seems a little bit too spartan for me. And it would probably be a nightmare to put together.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, it is a bit spartan. That is why I was hoping for some cushions, maybe. i am trying to find that precarious balance between style, comfort, and affordability. (thanks, Nicole!)

Ned - I am planning to live forever. Aren't you?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:08 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd get something like this, but it's a wee bit too expensive, and I'd have to buy chairs as well.

This thread isn't just about me, btw. Other people, post your interior design dilemmas now!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Strangely enough, I also have been looking for a table and chair set for our patio enclosure. But it seems like everything is either too expensive or kind of ugly.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, there aren't many options. Perhaps we should both enrol in online woodwork classes.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:16 (nineteen years ago) link

That is probably the way to go.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:18 (nineteen years ago) link

my friends got a really nice patio set from ikea that I can't seem to find in the catalogue. I think it was supposed to be expensive but they never got charged for it for some reason.

obv. ikea stuff is really hit and miss and most of it looks better at IKEA than it does in your house. I have a chair from there that I hate more and more with every passing day.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:49 (nineteen years ago) link

This reminds me that I think one day I need to get some new director's chairs for the picnic table on the balcony.

Ned - I am planning to live forever. Aren't you?

Maybe you're the same as me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Are director's chairs comfortable?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Depends on whether you're making points on the backend!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Screw the furniture, the housewares, its all about the swedish meatballs.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:14 (nineteen years ago) link

ewwwwww, they are horrible. the ice cream is good and cheap, though.

I read an interview with Jake Gyllenhaal which he inisted take place in the Ikea cafe in Burbank because of his Swedish ancestry.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:16 (nineteen years ago) link

The IKEA in L.A. (okay, Carson) doesn't have a super glam, kitchen-of-the-future cafeteria like the ones in Europe. Where the Swedish meatballs live. Why? Tell me why!!!!!!!!!

Skottie, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Does Burbank have one?

Skottie, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Apparently, Canada has joined Europe.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:19 (nineteen years ago) link

I think it was Burbank.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:19 (nineteen years ago) link

ikea is classic. ikea platform beds with slats are even more classic (xpost). i think it's more comfortable than a traditional box spring, but more importantly it looks kewl and sophisticated in my opinion.

i have been to ikea twice in the past two weeks. i have assembled five bookshelves, a couch, an ottoman, two metal shelving units, a tv stand, a nightstand, and a dresser. i hate ikea.

I feel your pain, I am old so I dread 'hex wrench finger' and sore back. My mind was utterly blown when I found out their catalog is all CG and not photos

Brakhage, Friday, 29 August 2014 23:44 (nine years ago) link

that makes perfect sense as i suspect all their in-store employees are holograms as they are utterly unwilling to lift a finger to assist you.

adam, Saturday, 30 August 2014 00:17 (nine years ago) link

I feel your pain, I am old so I dread 'hex wrench finger' and sore back.

Use a hex bit in any cheap power screwdriver or cordless drill. Not sure what Ikea was thinking expecting normal people to assemble 4x4 Expedit shelf cubes with a tiny hex wrench that needs to be turned about 400 times.

Today, around 75% of all IKEA’s product images are CG
