Breathed used to send his boards via air to the publishing company because he would work so close to deadline and miss the mailing date.

And sometimes, he'd even finish them up on the plane.

Scott Adams started getting help for a while when he developed a weird nerve condition in his hand

hmph, didn't know about this

was about to mention Bill Watterson too, especially since his strip was arguably the one with the most attention to detail (and the best writing by far)

Calvin and Hobbes unquestionably the greatest latter-day newspaper comic

Infamous dickbiscuits (silby), Wednesday, 7 November 2012 19:38 (eleven years ago) link

but that's a different thread

Newspaper strips would be a cool ballot poll someday.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 7 November 2012 19:44 (eleven years ago) link

maybe I'll run it after I get around to posting the rest of the animation results.

actually maybe someone else should run it

Infamous dickbiscuits (silby), Wednesday, 7 November 2012 19:52 (eleven years ago) link

I would be down if it happened over Christmas break or something. Totally into it but don't want to commit and then have it enter the rotation right as school/life is getting crazy, have made this mistake before.

needs a long listing, disdain for the just utterly pointless staples is gonna be the highpoint

absurdly pro-D (schlump), Wednesday, 7 November 2012 21:10 (eleven years ago) link

I think it'd definitely have to have a "worst" ballot also. Would love to find out once and for all if people hate Family Circus more than they hate Cathy, or whatever.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 7 November 2012 21:14 (eleven years ago) link

i love comics already sorta did it (it was general comics all around but i remember little nemo and calvin and hobbes and peanuts and popeye definitely placing so strips were incorporated) but that was years ago and non-newspaper strip specific so could be done again

Obama-ville

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 8 November 2012 15:35 (eleven years ago) link

Can somebody do the Heimlich on me real quick? I'm choking on the irony here.

Three Word Username, Thursday, 8 November 2012 15:37 (eleven years ago) link

LOL damn I wish I owned a classic Airstream, those things are worth a bundle! People living in Obama-villes must not be so bad off...

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Thursday, 8 November 2012 16:00 (eleven years ago) link

I just looked and even the smallest models go for around $15k...

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Thursday, 8 November 2012 16:01 (eleven years ago) link

Nothing's changed.....except the socialist hellscape!

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 8 November 2012 16:14 (eleven years ago) link

i like that you could replace "obama-ville" with "republican-town" and the point would be just as effective

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 8 November 2012 16:24 (eleven years ago) link

haha...poor white people in trailer parks...the true heart of obamaville

iatee, Thursday, 8 November 2012 16:34 (eleven years ago) link

I think it's supposed to be like a "Hooverville" or something but under Obama unemployment has gone down and foreclosure rates have been on the decrease recently as well, so... Right-wing alternative reality strikes again!

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Thursday, 8 November 2012 23:34 (eleven years ago) link

wait. wasn't solyndra a domestic energy producer?

I know the ineptitude is the point, but I really like how this cartoon makes no sense whatsoever.

Apparently Dems were ramming Obamacare (AKA MOAR DEBT!!!!) down some basement dweller's throat, but the noble elephant puts a +12 MAG DEF football helmet on to repel it.

Leeezzarina Sbarro (Leee), Sunday, 11 November 2012 04:08 (eleven years ago) link

It's a formalist punchline: Breitbart actually loses floating bits of sweat when translated to a cartoon.

It's like Nancy.

not sure if this is batshit or not, honestly can't tell what we're supposed to get out of it actually

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 11 November 2012 22:19 (eleven years ago) link

There's a bit of xenophobia buried beneath a murky half-assed premise, but I really can't be bothered to be offended.

45 DOWN: "NYPD Blue" actor ____ Morales (R Baez), Sunday, 11 November 2012 22:28 (eleven years ago) link

illinois, cali, greece all undergoing debt crises, implication is obama govt will lead to same for usa. second is implying that gop is undergoing self autopsy, clumsily, something something hispanics. neither esp batshit tbh, certainly not for the standards set by this field.

balls, Sunday, 11 November 2012 22:45 (eleven years ago) link

xp umm isn't that last one the Republican party attempting to do an autopsy on itself? not batshit/xenophobic imo

Inconceivable (to the entire world) (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 12 November 2012 00:10 (eleven years ago) link

oh lol wait it's not actually a spanish language cartoonist. ok wtf

Inconceivable (to the entire world) (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 12 November 2012 00:10 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, so...they're doing an 'autopsy' on the party to figure out what went wrong, okay...and it has something to do with the Hispanic vote.. except...performing an autopsy when you're still alive is suicide, so they're stupid? So it's stupid to figure out the party by checking in with the Hispanic vote? Or is it, if the Republicans "spoke Spanish" better, they wouldn't have made this obvious elementary mistake of performing the autopsy on yourself while still alive?

Doctor Casino, Monday, 12 November 2012 00:12 (eleven years ago) link

I read the cartoon as an implicit disapproval of the GOP courting/pandering to the latino/minority/whatever vote in light of the election.

Though you could read it as whatever; christ what a shitty artoonist.

45 DOWN: "NYPD Blue" actor ____ Morales (R Baez), Monday, 12 November 2012 00:17 (eleven years ago) link

the meaning is clear. the party is dead because it was 100% Hispanic. now that it needs to perform an autopsy on itself, it must use a how-to book in Spanish, because that is the only kind of how-to book the now-dead party can read. I don't see what's so hard about thi

The elephant is Rove. The book is Megyn Kelly. The saw is Julian Castro.

45 DOWN: "NYPD Blue" actor ____ Morales (R Baez), Monday, 12 November 2012 00:21 (eleven years ago) link

That California cartoon is hilarious. We're Greece right now, but watch out cuz a Dem Supermajority will make everything even worse.

If an editorial cartoonist ever again draws the deficit as a big hungry monster (or dragon or King Kong), he should have his hand cut off.

pplains, Saturday, 17 November 2012 16:00 (eleven years ago) link

I am in favor of the deficit. We're all Keynesians now. Specifically, we all keep track of the boys we fuck in a secret journal.

I think the day you make a cartoon sympathizing with "The Rich" is the day you have sold your soul to the devil.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 17 November 2012 16:53 (eleven years ago) link
