to be honest he thought that the Arby's hat was a penis hidden in plain sight and it was probably just a case of "Schwanzangst"

Yahoo!'s old logo was no great shakes, and I realize they're not a top tier player in the internet world anymore, but surely they could've paid for better than this:

I think they are showing a new one every day for thirty days.

Judging from their Flickr redesign, you can rest assured that there is much, much worse to come, and that the worst of all will be the final selection.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 8 August 2013 05:43 (ten years ago) link

I don't hate the Flickr redesign like some people do, but I admit there's a certain amount of fun in ragging on Yahoo.

Hipsterbranding is awesome.

If only because our SU's last design team basically covered everything in that style and we mocked them for it.

This has to be one of the all-time worst - replacing a truly classic, industry-changing, universally recognized, spectacularly distinctive logo/signage with this generic, utterly forgettable POS....

c'mon you're pulling the old before/after photo trick there, everything looks great in neon.

click here to start exploding (ledge), Thursday, 8 August 2013 12:40 (ten years ago) link

those were actually incandescent light bulbs for many of the animated parts, which were U&K. The cost of keeping the signs lit is cited by the company as one reason they were removed.

An environmental disaster mind you, but it could be replicated nowadays using low-power LEDs for less than the fluorescent tubes in the new signs cost to run.

Pretty sure I know someone with a tattoo of it, in fact.

I don't know what this is, but it's currently appearing on the tv network's Youtube page and it's only applied to the promo of Samantha Bee's upcoming late night show...

should never changed off the 1966 version

!963 + a better font (maybe Copperplate Gothic) would have been ideal.

Acanthonus armatus (Sanpaku), Monday, 29 January 2018 19:10 (six years ago) link

that one looks cool but also looks old. white outline around the blue makes it illegible. the '66 on looks like a simpler, more modern iteration of what preceded it, timeless imo. they basically kept it (just shoehorned some other stuff in) until 93.

they somehow managed to make the 2016 one worse with the new one.

fgti spinner (Spottie), Monday, 29 January 2018 19:18 (six years ago) link

whoa they were "Best Eastern" from 1964-1966? *mind-blown.gif*

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 29 January 2018 22:33 (six years ago) link

I thought the W had slipped, but no, that would mean it was advertising Best Wastern. Could've been a good compromise!

Couldn't get past those clever front desk clerks though:

In California, a network of independent hotel operators began making referrals of each other to travelers. This “referral system” consisted of phone calls between one desk operator and another.

I mean, now that's how you make a network! Operators calling each other from their respective desks.

Also, BW tried to pass itself off as a co-op (instead of a franchisor) until the NORTH DAKOTA SUPREME COURT stepped in and knocked off the funny business.

Flipside of this thread: corporations keeping absolutely terrible logos around forever and ever. If the Container Store logo was good, it'd be dope that they've stuck by it, but somehow they have chosen to stay loyal to the most incredibly bland thing possible, all their branding makes them look like a drug store that got a peppy refresh in 1990, and presumably sells tupperware and the like, even as the actual contents of their stores seem to be going for a slightly stylish "mini-IKEA" of semi-designy shelving, desks, and miscellaneous housewares.
