strongo hulkington's ghost dad, Friday, 30 November 2012 22:12 (eleven years ago) link

now I imagine Soundgarden returning the favor and covering "Should've Known Better."

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 30 November 2012 22:13 (eleven years ago) link

I like to think about the people (who surely existed) who heard Should've Known Better and thought "Wow, I didn't know Richard Marx could ROCK!"

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 30 November 2012 22:31 (eleven years ago) link

Don't Mean Nothing and Should've Known Better were actually his first two singles. The ballads came later.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 30 November 2012 22:34 (eleven years ago) link

awww dammit

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 30 November 2012 22:54 (eleven years ago) link

yeah Marx's early rockers weren't bad at all. "Don't Mean Nothing" actually has Joe Walsh (which makes sense: it's a "Long Run" rewrite).

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 1 December 2012 00:00 (eleven years ago) link

and it must be pointed out:

Marx placed himself in the record books by being the first solo artist to have his first seven singles hit the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart (3, 3, 2, 1, 1, 1, 4)

Not to mention his songwriting/production credits.

I really like some of the stuff he's written for Keith Urban.

he was pretty cool on Chelsea Peretti's podcast

This is also a Marx jam, as is that N' Sync one:

for being a #1 single it's fallen down the memory hole. I bought Repeat Offender thanks to this lol

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:15 (eleven years ago) link

nice

I've been thinking about it. I had it on cassette in high school but never re-upped. Maybe it's time.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:16 (eleven years ago) link

I could be wrong, but Marx's hair was a topic of discussion even when people had ridiculous hair everywhere, right? Because that's just plain silly.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:18 (eleven years ago) link

it was p impressive, even for the time

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:19 (eleven years ago) link

because Marx was just over four feet tall.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:19 (eleven years ago) link

didn't get into a tiff with Adam Curry?

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:19 (eleven years ago) link

Richard Marx leaned his head over the West Hollywood restaurant table and poked his fingers into the top of his notoriously lush mane.

"You can see right here, I have no hair spray," the pop singer said. "I don't ever use hair spray. I just have thick hair, which I think (upsets) a lot of bald critics."

lol

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:21 (eleven years ago) link

"When I read bad reviews of me and when I read slams in the press, I don't ever read, 'He doesn't sing well' or, 'He doesn't write melodic songs,' or 'He doesn't work hard on stage or produce good records,' " he said. "I read, 'His hair's too perfect.' "

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:22 (eleven years ago) link

HAHA

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:24 (eleven years ago) link

Marx called Curry a "mousse endorsement."

Okay, so Marx has always been pretty zingy. Love this dude now.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:25 (eleven years ago) link

he always seemed like a funny, chill sorta dude. i feel bad for him ;_;

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:25 (eleven years ago) link

I still think Marx's "Angelia" is one of the best hair-metal ballads of the 80s - it's basically just a Def Leppard ripoff. Haven't heard that song in decades but I'm sure I'd still like it today.

musicfanatic, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:40 (eleven years ago) link

Didn't remember that track until the video started, but yeah...that's some post-Hysteria ish.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:42 (eleven years ago) link

I was 14 when I heard that "Hitline USA" episode (which Curry hosted briefly) in which they sparred.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:42 (eleven years ago) link

I dunno, seems p much straight ballad to me. I hear the Hysteria connection but I'd never go as far as hair metal.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:43 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I guess the way the guitar sounds reminds me of Hysteria a bit. His voice kills any metal aspect. Hair Ballad.

musicfanatic, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:45 (eleven years ago) link

Pretty boilerplate slow-Marxian single imo. Not one of the best of anything.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:45 (eleven years ago) link

hey

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:46 (eleven years ago) link

It's no Hold On To The Night, c'mon!

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:46 (eleven years ago) link

i guess. I like the last half of Hold On To the Night but the first half takes FOREVER to build

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:52 (eleven years ago) link

I like Marx when he goes big, lol

YES

god I love that

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 19:12 (eleven years ago) link

"Now and Forever" is a gross sack of shit though

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 19:21 (eleven years ago) link

yeah he veers into that Bryan Adams/Everything I Do territory there, it's too much

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 19:28 (eleven years ago) link

I don't feel the least bit sorry for him -- he's living exactly the sort of life that shoudl be the envy of musicians: stable marriage of 20+ years, massive early success, regular royalty checks, still writing and producing hits.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 23:28 (eleven years ago) link

He's playing a small club here in a couple of weeks, same place I'm seeing Graham Parker.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 23:38 (eleven years ago) link

Which would you prefer, Josh -- a punked-up cover of "Should've Known Better" by Parker or Marx doing an acousti-sensitive "You Can't Be Too Strong"?

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 23:42 (eleven years ago) link

Good question! Marx is more versatile, so maybe Marx doing Parker? Then again, Parker doing Marx would be more fun. Marx clearly writes songs others like to sing.

Marx popped on stage for one of his songs when I saw Keith Urban a while back.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 23:44 (eleven years ago) link

i worked on a show that had an episode w/marxie 10+ years ago. iirc he came across as remarkably decent. on that same show, david foster was revealed as a thoroughly reprehensible piece of shit but that's another story.

saw him live last night & idk what deal he has made with the devil but his voice still sounds fkng great

Anyway it made me go back and find some of the later-period albums I hadn't heard, like Flesh & Bone & that red Avalon one that I can't remember the name of and the most recent album and they're pretty good imo! Though I will admit to a deep abiding bias, lol.

It occurred to me that his catalog would hold up well against a listening thread if enough ppl were on board.

oh that would be fun. i legit loved 'hazard' when i was 9 or 10 and when i go back to those songs now they really are quite decent and defensible.
