Said that out loud when he came on screen

Gukbe, Monday, 3 December 2012 04:35 (eleven years ago) link

good episode, loved the new group introduction. the Woodbury rescue was great, too.

also, yay, they let Danai Gurira emote!!! finally! great confrontation b/w her and the Governor, though I kinda wish she had just said "uh, he sent a death squad after me" instead of stomping off quietly

speaking of which, Andrea's stupidity really did cross a new line here, i mean, come on, AQUARIUMS OF ZOMBIE HEADS. there is no rational explanation for that one. she really needs to pull out of this character dive ASAP when the show comes back, or just kill her off already.

also i'm gonna say it again: wtf AMC, you had to kill the black guy again? i was kinda joking about the minority actor rationing, but i mean, seriously, this is getting kind of fucked up

Nhex, Monday, 3 December 2012 04:47 (eleven years ago) link

OK, gotta say, jut started this ep and that was the best cold open ever. Always interesting to see what other bands of survivors are like.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 3 December 2012 19:01 (eleven years ago) link

that cold open was great! major scouting fail on Rick's group's behalf to not know the whole back of the prison is open O_o

CUTTTTTYYYYYYYYYY yay so glad he's in this now

yeah I'm with u nhex, I was super bummed when they offed the black dude YET AGAIN. like, cmon man t-dogg was hard enough, let a few brothers live ffs.

the look on andrea's face when she was having that stand-off with Mishonne was like 'OMG YOU'RE RUINING EVERYTHING'

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 3 December 2012 19:12 (eleven years ago) link

Wait, what exactly did Michonne have against the governor? In the comic (spoiler?) the gov, iirc, raped and tortured her, so she wanted vengeance. But what does she have against him in this telling?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 3 December 2012 19:37 (eleven years ago) link

he did send a death squad after her

Nhex, Monday, 3 December 2012 19:52 (eleven years ago) link

Sure, but get in line, you know? Or take it out on Merle, for shooting her. But heading back to the person who sent the death squad after you, with that person still surrounded by said death squad? Doesn't seem worth the risk. Vs. vengeance after the guy raped and tortured you, which yes, I definitely see that.

I have noticed that for every black guy they kill they seem to add two more black characters. T-Dogg dies, we get Michonne and the prisoner. Prisoner dies, we get Cutty and his friend. At this rate there will be (does math) maybe four black speaking roles by the end of the season?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 3 December 2012 19:59 (eleven years ago) link

you're forgetting the chick from season 1 who decides to die in the explosion, and the escaped prisoner who sets off the alarm. i wouldn't take odds that Cutty's friend will make to the end of the season, but i'm hoping she will

Michonne definitely has some trust issues that i'm hoping they'll go back and explain, but i can easily accept that a) in their first meeting, his goons kidnap her and Andrea b) she figures out pretty fast that Gov/Merle & Co. are some stone cold psychos and c) if they sent out a bunch of dudes to kill her for basically NO reason, chances are good that they'll do it again, so it's worth slicing him up. also d) she knew something crazy was going on in that locked room, but i guess she's just a curious cat

of course, that makes the decision to NOT kill him because of Andrea's stupidity even worse, but ehhhhhhhhhhhhh ok there's my limit

Nhex, Monday, 3 December 2012 20:07 (eleven years ago) link

I forgot everything about season one. Iirc, they were still working out how many dead black characters translate to new black characters. But I'm hopeful!

Isn't this show set around Atlanta? Which is majority African-American? Sort of adds insult to injury.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 3 December 2012 20:21 (eleven years ago) link

yup.

Nhex, Monday, 3 December 2012 20:24 (eleven years ago) link

i think mishonne's beef with the guvna is a) turning andrea's head and taking her away b) threatening her when they had their last face-off ...and her first introdution to him was seeing him kill the helicopter dude who for her, for all intents and purposes was still human and had not turned. sure she didn't know about the carrier thing, that everyone will turn, but she sees him as a coldblooded killer from the getgo and I don't think any of her interactions with him changed that impression. and maybe she knew that killing the guvna was the only way to get andrea out? idk. that's me heavily editorializing so who the hell knows.

but there's a part of me that also thinks, for all her toughness at heart there's something v childlike in mishonne. and the guvna scared the fuck out of her. and maybe that was enough reason. i dunno her backstory but my guess is that's not the first time she's felt/been physically threatened by someone

shrug I'll stop, I'm just making shit up at htis point now, lol

Agreeably insane comic-style analysis of zombie kills in the series so far: http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/12/05/graphic-stopping-the-dead-a-statistical-look-back-at-the-walking-dead-series-so-far/

I can't have been the only one who thought "tailaways" when the new group turned up at the beginning of the episode.

trishyb, Saturday, 8 December 2012 18:43 (eleven years ago) link

was it just me or did anyone else have a fleeting moment where they half expected Carol to bone down with twitchy mustache guy

maria hasn't been watching this and we watched the first two episodes of season one last night and man that is a weird experience. knowing what i know and all. definitely a show worth re-watching.

so stupid to play WHAT IF with this series but can't help thinking that if glenn hadn't mentioned merle they all would have just gotten out of there together. oh well. you need a cliffhanger. i was a little confused about why the gov decided that merle had to go. oh wait never mind i know now. merle had told the gov that he killed sword woman. duh. is that it?

scott seward, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 15:05 (eleven years ago) link

he wasn't sure about his loyalties since they found out his brother was alive, and second yeah, Merle not killing Michonne AND lying about it - the resulting consequences were pretty bad for the ol' Gov. Plus you know, he's a fascist control freak who demands absolute loyalty

Nhex, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 15:20 (eleven years ago) link

Plus this could all be long con stuff by the governor, especially if they're trying to still adhere somewhat loosely to the storyline as it played out in the comics.

Gukbe, Thursday, 27 December 2012 20:58 (eleven years ago) link

For what it’s worth, two fellow showrunners have taken to Twitter (via Deadline) to criticize the network over it’s treatment of the creative forces behind its programs. “The Shield” creator Shawn Ryan tweeted “AMC, WTF? Common knowledge that AMC cut ‘Breaking Bad’ shorter than it should have been. Now you have creative differences w/ biggest hit’s savior? With FX, Showtime, HBO, Starz, Cinemax, A&E, TNT and others to sell to, it’s a real question now why good show runners should sell to AMC?”

Kurt Sutter, the infamously profane creator of “Sons Of Anarchy” didn’t hold anything back when he tweeted “AMC is run by small-minded, bottom-line thinkers who have no appreciation or gratitude for the effort of its creative personnel. Time and time again we see events like what happened today with Glen Mazzara. They continue to disrespect writers, shit on their audiences and bury their network. Mazzara took the work-in-progress that was ‘Walking Dead’ and turned into a viable TV show with a future. Without him, that future is dim. Showrunners are not development executives, we’re not cookiecutter douchebags that you plug into a preexisting model. TWD will suffer. Even Zombies need consistency. ‘Mad Men’ and ‘Breaking Bad’ will be gone soon. So will AMC. I hope their f*cking stock takes a dive and the shareholders line up (Josh) Sapan, (Charles) Dolan and (Charlie) Collier and shit in their open hands. C*nts.”

lol

one month passes...

Man, Laurie Holden has some crazy annoying bobblehead acting tics.

Solid ep. Welcome back. Good to hear that Mazzara at least steered this season to its end, so it probably won't all apart before then.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 11 February 2013 16:53 (eleven years ago) link

I'm pretty okay with the actress, just her character's actions seem to make little sense most of the time. The Governor's flimsy excuses get worse and worse, like he/the writers are not even trying anymore

Not gonna lie though, I still love seeing Rick going wack-a-doo OTT

Nhex, Monday, 11 February 2013 16:57 (eleven years ago) link

It is an interesting twist, though. Both communities are being lead by clearly unstable men. But what is the alternative? Stick with the nut who has kept you safe, or take your chances in Zombieland?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 11 February 2013 17:02 (eleven years ago) link

I saw a bit of that annoying Talking Dead show afterwards; just wanted to mention how annoyed I was that Kevin Smith totally misinterpreted that good bit where Rick is holding the baby, and obviously feels this massive disconnect from it, furthering his spiral into madness - Smith totally just missed this

Nhex, Monday, 11 February 2013 17:13 (eleven years ago) link

I thought Rick was going to chuck the baby into the wall.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 11 February 2013 17:35 (eleven years ago) link

In fairness, that baby totally wouldn't shut up

Nhex, Monday, 11 February 2013 17:35 (eleven years ago) link

God I thought he was going to snap the baby's neck

lol this show is so funny, all that "mm mm, boy howdy" innuendo from merle early on was hilarious. "like two peas in a pod", "real cosy" while he gurned and licked his lips. andrea, wtf is she even doing at this point or what's her motivation, the whole thing is just so shonkily hammered together.

Ballboy to Afghanistan (LocalGarda), Monday, 11 February 2013 23:17 (eleven years ago) link

Well, they're still juggling too many plots, since they're conflating several comic stories at once. Also, this world is still super small; I get the feeling most of the show has taken place in the same five square miles or so.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 11 February 2013 23:31 (eleven years ago) link

AVClub:

The much higher stakes of last night’s episode—what with fans dying to see baby Judith beginning to lift her own head and respond to sounds, and also that whole war with The Governor thing—brought in an even larger audience, even against the comparatively less-exciting zombie that is the music industry lumbering through another Grammys. At this point, with its 7.7 million average among adults 18 to 49, The Walking Dead is actually doing better numbers in that demo than any of its competitors—including top broadcast shows like The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, and NCIS, which is totally unprecedented. No doubt AMC celebrated the news by binge-hiring-and-firing three new showrunners.

Has anyone in the history of TV and movies ever marked a makeshift grave with anything but a cross?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 25 February 2013 17:58 (eleven years ago) link

in the star wars movies that just burned the jedis on pyres... does that count?

Nhex, Monday, 25 February 2013 18:02 (eleven years ago) link

Nah, pyres don't count. I'm talking dug graves.

solid bottle episode. the actor who playing Morgan killed it

Nhex, Monday, 4 March 2013 12:46 (eleven years ago) link

I figure a simple locked door would be a more effective deterrent than a trip wire with an axe, at least in the long run.

Evan, Monday, 4 March 2013 14:40 (eleven years ago) link

yeah that was the best episode in ages. though I said to Mr Veg it took me a while to get my head around what Morgan meant by 'clear' because I kept thinking about scientology, lol

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 4 March 2013 17:13 (eleven years ago) link

i thought this episode was kinda underwhelming, just pointless filler so they can delay the battle a bit more coupled with a bit of rick will sleep with michonne heavy hinting for good measure.

dude what show are u watching

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 4 March 2013 23:42 (eleven years ago) link

nothing happened plotwise and the morgan stuff was badly acted and badly written. it's always disappointing when a show has to sidestep its entire plot for a week and waste an episode because there's obviously not enough of it to fill a tiny season. this was like one of those eps of lost.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 5 March 2013 00:01 (eleven years ago) link

yeah but this was better than the entire plot. the entire plot is pretty much dumb as heck! the general atmospherics on this episode were like all i ever wanted from this show in the first place.

Clay, Tuesday, 5 March 2013 00:22 (eleven years ago) link

It didn't sidestep the plot. It addressed the OH HAI MY NAME'S CRAZY RICK I CHASE GHOSTY LADIES NOW development of the last few episodes; sure they didn't make him stand in front of a mirror and have flashbacks but through his confrontation with Morgan, now Rick is pushed into assessing not only his current state but his future; even when he was saying to Morgan 'this can't be all there is', he was declaring his own motivation, like he'd just woken up again. This episode answered the question that's been simmering: is Rick going to be able to lead them against the Governor. Perhaps NOW he can. Is Mishonne going to have Rick's back, or the group's back for that matter? Perhaps now she will.

I mean, if you didn't like it you didn't like it; but there was a lot more depth in this episode than this show has had in ages. I thought Morgan/Lennie James was great, I didn't find his acting on the nose at all. And I found a lot of that episode (finally) genuinely human and moving.

nobody on the planet is excited to find out how the epic showdown with the governor pans out, so sidestepping the main plot is good
