He's playing here this weekend, and I probably would have gone if not for other plans. Tickets seemed pretty cheap - I guess no one cares about this dude anymore. Coincidentally just heard Angelia for the first time last month, that's pretty much how you do a ballad.

This is such a funny way to end this article. Though recording a Christmas album w Kenny Loggins is probably a better way to earn money than writing a story about how you insulted a guy you never met and then impressed your boozehound friends by avoiding a bar fight.

The funny thing to me is that the writer sounds like like he was kinda meek/apologetic at the bar meetup, but then like any good passive-aggressive douche goes and editorializes about all the things he WOULD have said in the blog.

I like it because the guy writing the article depicts himself as a not-particularly-influential critic who makes an offhanded comment thinking nothing of it, and finds himself sucked into an a comically ominous battle with a soft rock B-lister. I think he approaches the situation half-wanting to blow off Richard Marx as some lame has-been, and so he never takes Marx seriously, just riding the wave of this bizarre experience to the point where he ends up having an uncomfortable face-to-face meeting.

“Explain to me why I’m shameless,” Richard Marx said.

Had I given it more thought, I would have written that Richard Marx was the kind of musician who wouldn’t be ashamed to record anything he thought would sell a million copies. But I didn’t want to say that to his face.

"You called me shameless in my hometown, where my family can read this.”

That was a douchey thing to say, especially since Richard Marx is married to a model and I’d woken up alone that morning. I let it pass, though. I wasn’t there to start another argument.

i'm super-curious why marx is so worked up about the phrase "shamelesness," but why should a journalist be expected to explore that, or even defend his work, when he can just hem, haw, hand the offended a copy of his book about obama and write a tell-all later?

no question he gets defensive about music. Besides the Adam Curry kerfuffle, I remember reading an irate letter in his name after Entertainment Weekly made disparaging remarks about him in the mid nineties.

the sellout argument is kinda moot if you never liked him in the first place though, surely

he's referring to the Alan Vega-Colin Newman collaboration that Marx left in the vaults because the record company wanted "Endless Summer Nights."
