I've never listened to XM so I can't compare the two programming-wise. However, since Sirius is an independant company and XM has Clear-Channel ties I have to say you are wrong, Jimmy.

XM soul and country is vastly superior to Sirius. My iPod is vastly superior to both.

I haven't really ventured out beyond the rock stations very much but

C: Underground Garage (esp. Andrew Loog Oldham), Left of Center (although they jump on way too many major-label bandwagons, e.g. She Wants Revenge), Vin Scelsa (on Disorder)

still thinking about it: Disorder (good free-form radio is actually pretty difficult; these folks drive right into all the potholes that you'd expect 'em to)

D: Classic Vinyl/Classic Rewind, Spectrum

Jeff Wright (JeffW1858), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Maybe I'll have to take another shot at Disorder. I listed for about an hour once and was bored to tears but could've just been that show. The channel description however is complete roffles: Adventurous music for grown-ups.

I also should try to tune in for Bam's show but the one time I stopped on the Faction channel and heard Korn, I was done.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:53 (seventeen years ago) link

i was playing my ipod via itrip on 87.9FM in the minivan parked at the harvest food parking lot when the driver of a hotel to airport bus walked out of the store, across the car park and up the stairs to his drivers seat. at this point joe jackson's steppin' out suddenly changes to something unrecognizable, yet crystal clear, on my car radio. the song ended and then a voice 'youre listening to sirius channel 37'. i looked around trying to work out what had happened and as i looked at the driver of the van i saw him switch the engine off and at the same time my ipod playlist came back. WTF? I assumed some kind of code was required to receive satellite radio.

Feel how hot sirius gets, Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:04 (seventeen years ago) link

yes bam likes crap music.

On the non-built in receivers, you turn into an empty channel to listen (like with your iTrip). So proxmity to someone else doing so can give you a free listen. If it's on the house and I get in the car I can still pick it up for awhile.

There was a story recently how sirius channels were bleeding over into low-on-the band stations, which are usually christian or public radio. funny.

city of gyros (chaki), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:21 (seventeen years ago) link

XM's CC-ties are overplayed. Last I read, they do not control anything near a significant share of things(except for some of the shows syndicated over the air).

Also, i do have XM, but I live in Portland now, so I miss the CBC2/CBC3 reception I had in michigan.

kingfish doesn't live here anymore (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 20:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Apparently, XM's had to put commercials on a few of their music stations to honor some residual clause with the CC deal.

On Sirius, I like the Young Turks on the liberal talk station.
I think most of the music stations are good to at least hit or miss. Though aside from Flipper's "Sex Bomb" being in regular rotation on one of the alternative stations, the playlists are pretty predictible, at least for music nerdz. The classic hip hop station (I think it's #43) is probably the one I can listen to for the longest stretch before needing to change the station.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 21:07 (seventeen years ago) link

That station Hank's...garage? attic? PLACE!!! was playing great old country music in our rented car one night on our vacation, but then the next time we tuned it in it they were playing Bocephus. Ack.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 00:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Mike OTM re: the commercials on XM. XM subsequently added a few commercial-free music streams so they could still claim 'most commercial-free music!', then Sirius came back with '100% commercial-free music!', etc. Actually there are plenty of 'commercials' on Sirius if you count all the plugs for other Sirius streams/programming.

Chaki, yes, the Canadian stations are decent. The Vault is OK but listening to it really drives home the point about how small the playlists are on commercial classic rock stations.

I'll have to check out individual shows on disorder.

The talk channels have commercials but not the music. This really pissed me off with stern since I'm already fucking paying to hear him, why commercials too.

Beth, in post-2000 Bocephus is good old country. ;)

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 12:17 (seventeen years ago) link

He doesn't have very many commercials and he is on the air for five hours, so you can put up with a few goldenpalace ads.

accountsettings (account), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 12:20 (seventeen years ago) link

actually I try not to put up with any of it b/c I harbor a keen loathing for him. However when I'm forced to listen his cheesy shilling riles me up.

They actually DID play a decent song of his. He started out half-okay. Was it that rock-climbing accident when he scraped off his face and perforated his brain that marked a falling-off point? (I forget the exact injuries, but they were something along that line)

Sirius ships their units set to 88.1FM. Unfortunately that means when Sirius listeners come in close proximity to college radio listeners they step all over the signal. During my 45 minute morning commute Stern interrupts my radio about 6 times on average. Usually just a 1-2 second blip (I commute against traffic) but still damn annoying that they felt they could coopt that portion of the FM band. Makes me want to mount a class-action suit.

Disclaimer: the station I dj on is at 88.1FM and we've been getting listener complaints about Sirius constantly interrupting people's signals. I feel sorry for any of our listeners who work near a major commuter artery.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Thursday, 4 May 2006 19:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't remember our Sirius units being defaulted to anything. When I first set mine up I had to manually find an empty frequency. I think it just happens that in most places 88.1 would be that one. (I think ours is 93 something).

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 4 May 2006 19:44 (seventeen years ago) link

It is too bad the FCC didn't allocate 1 or 2 FM frequencies for these kinds of devices. They only care about money. This is why 802.11, Bluetooth and cordless phones all occupy the same spectrum area.

JW (ex machina), Thursday, 4 May 2006 19:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Depends on the unit I guess, two co-workers have cheaper ones that auto-default to 88.1FM. Both of them complained to me that my station was interfering with their Sirius.

The Boston Globe wrote us with the same POV, that the station was somehow to blame for poor Sirius reception. We wrote back with our perspective on the situation, AFAIK an article was never written about it.

Sorry, sore spot with me. If I had a show on Sirius I'd probably take the other POV of course. :)

I've heard "Fuck Yo Couch" on the radio.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I think the problem is just the small stations and community radio don't have enough power.

poly, do you mean you heard "Bleep Yo Couch"?

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:46 (seventeen years ago) link

the fm transmitters are defaulted to "off" too!

city of gyros (chaki), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:48 (seventeen years ago) link

poly, do you mean you heard "Bleep Yo Couch"?

Yeah, fair enough.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:51 (seventeen years ago) link

On XM - the MLB/ESPN (free) package is nice. All four hip-hop stations have their strong points (one played Salt-n-Pepa's "Shoop" the last time I was in my brother's car, bonus), I like the three Top 40 stations (20,21,22).

The rock stations all suck. The 'punk' channel is non-stop awful pop-punk and ska-punk, faux-college radio station is as bad as you might expect a CC-affiliated college radio station to be, and the rest are just uninteresting.

I don't know which I'd buy if I was getting it for my truck. Sirius sounds like the better choice for music, but that baseball package would be key on road trips.

milo z (mlp), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:59 (seventeen years ago) link

My older Sirius PNP2 can be set to 88.1, 88.3, 88.5, or 88.7.

If people are complaining that noncom radio interferes with their satellite reception, all they need to do is go to a car audio store (or maybe contact their sat radio unit manufacturer) and get a small switch box that will kill the external FM antenna when the sat radio receiver is powered on. This is pretty much required for car sat radio listening in areas with a lot of noncom stations.

It *doesn't* address the noncom listeners' occasionally getting interrupted by passing sat radio FM modulators. This was essentially the issue that kept XM/Sirius out of Canada until very recently.

Jeff Wright (JeffW1858), Friday, 5 May 2006 01:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I disagree. I've actually found some really good stuff from XM's college/indie station(called XMU). Their "classic alternative" station needs some work, as it goes way too much into the pouncey 80's brit shit.

Also, i mainly listen to XMPR whilst commuting now, for Bob Edwards' show in the morning(tho he's been talking to a disturbing preponderance of folkies lately) to Open Source on the way home.

kingfish doesn't live here anymore (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 5 May 2006 04:17 (seventeen years ago) link

My parents have Sirius - and the disco station "The Strobe" is pretty good - they'll play the usual Village People/Bee Gees, but also dip into 80s NYC disco/freestylye. Some of the artists I've heard on the station: D-Train, Machine, Shannon, Lime, Planet Patrol, Freeez, Musique, Patrick Cowley, Salsoul Orchestra, Taana Gardener, etc. And the DJs seem really happy to be able to play this kind of stuff.

The chill out station is rather broad - I've heard Boards of Canada and Isolee as much as Air and Zero 7.

I like my sirius but I really mostly just stream it online at work. The unit is cumbersome to bring around and its often hard to get a goo d signal.I listen to first wave, elvis radio, classical and old school rap, but sometimes I thik I should just have gotten an ipod

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Friday, 5 May 2006 07:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I still love my iPod, don't get me wrong. But it's nice to have someone else picking music for you every now and then - makes for some plesant surprises.

I pretty much only stream Sirius here at my desk and in the kitchen over the laptop when I'm cooking. I bought my boyfriend a car stereo receiver and a portable he listens to in his office. I'm actually surprised I'm able to stream off the same account while he's listening on a receiver in his office. nice though.

Channel: Pure Jazz/72
Event: Guest DJ Donald Fagen of Steely Dan
Time: 10 pm ET

Tonight we turn the Pure Jazz controls over to Donald Fagen. A jazz fan since his early days of sneaking into the Village Vanguard, Fagen puts on his late-night-jazz-DJ hat and spins the records that have meant the most to him as a musician and a fan.

Basically, that entire chorus is some great mu-chord orgy, I'm thinking, anyhow...

Free through June 5! I love 50s music, but their 50s channel is remarkably lacking in rock, rockabilly, jump blues, doo wop etc., and heavy on Perry Como, Patti Page, Mitch Miller, and novelty hits like “The Chipmunk Song” and “Purple People Eater.” And songs I heard this morning were repeated this evening.

Three Rings for the Elven Bishop (Dan Peterson), Sunday, 28 May 2023 03:11 (ten months ago) link

As Kurt says above, the deep cuts channels (mostly streaming-only off of the app) are pretty good, Indie 1.0 ('80s-'90s 'college radio' rock) and First Wave Deep Cuts especially. Still surprised after all these years they've never tried a dedicated prog channel, even on the app.

re: my comments above from '06: most car manufacturers aren't even bothering to put SXM transponders in these days as everyone just runs through their phone. SXM will definitely play ball with you on any renewal agreement, so by all means don't pay list price; call 'em up and see what deal du jour (or probably deal du individual sales rep) they're offering.
