(I swear the thread title was top 100 harpiest songs of all time.)

39. Bruce Low - "Alte Haus von Rocky Docky"

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 13:41 (nineteen years ago) link

53. Madonna 'Holiday'

i can see how "holiday" could make you happy as a listener. it makes me happy. but the first word of the song -- "if" -- gives away the fact that the singer may not be coming from a place of happiness herself. i think this song is more about wanting to be happy, or trying to be happy, rather than actually being happy. for whatever that's worth.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:36 (nineteen years ago) link

38. The Rolling Stones - Let's Spend the Night Together

LSTD (answer) (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:38 (nineteen years ago) link

37. The Rolling Stones - Happy
(It's a Keith song, so it probably is genuinely about being happy)

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:41 (nineteen years ago) link

stevem i thought u found BoC depressing?

much of their work yes, but not that one

factcheckingcuz - it's not just about the lyrics tho is it, it's such a groovy feelgood production. anyway 'if' suggests hope and the whole thing at least alludes to happiness, so that'll do for me. i was actually going to pick 'Borderline' for the same reason.

36. The Boo Radleys 'Wake Up Boo' (despite 'death of Summer' bits)

35. Prince 'Raspberry Beret'

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:43 (nineteen years ago) link

34. Beck - Electric Music and The Summer People (aka the poor [stoned] man's "Holiday Road")

33. They Might Be Giants "Don't Let's Start"
32. Tribe Called Quest "Award Tour"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:44 (nineteen years ago) link

no 'Bonita Applebaum' (the 'Why' mix obv.)

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:45 (nineteen years ago) link

31. Kylie 'Spinning Around'

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:46 (nineteen years ago) link

30. Mungo Jerry 'In The Summertime'

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:47 (nineteen years ago) link

factcheckingcuz - it's not just about the lyrics tho is it, it's such a groovy feelgood production. anyway 'if' suggests hope and the whole thing at least alludes to happiness, so that'll do for me.

true enough. then again, you could make that argument for every upbeat pop and rock song ever.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:51 (nineteen years ago) link

26. Bay City Rollers, "You Made Me Believe in Magic"

25. Spanky & Our Gang, "Lazy Day"

BTW, what would it take for someone to compile as many of these as possible onto a mix CD? The more I read, the more I like ... especially to know that there's someone else out there thrilled by Barry Manilow's "Daybreak."

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 21:53 (nineteen years ago) link

19. You know, that Cure one about, er, Friday I think it was

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 22:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Also, I guess we're not counting lyrics on this one:

33. They Might Be Giants "Don't Let's Start"

Cause, um, it's not a very happy song at all if you count lyrics.

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 22:49 (nineteen years ago) link

replace that Marlena Shaw one with The Marvelettes 'Heatwave'. as happy as the music is ('Me And Mrs Jones' basically, which I suppose you could also replace it with) the lyrics aren't overall happy. Would'e picked The Avalanches '2 Hearts In 3/4 Time' except it all goes a bit dark and chaotic at the end.

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 22:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Michael jackson 'I Wanna Be Where You Are' is another i want to suggest but am not sure. musically it's a gloriously joyous affair like so much of his early solo output, but as with most light soul of the era there's a still a tinge of poignancy in the lyrics and voice somewhat that maybe rule it out at this high a level?

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 22:58 (nineteen years ago) link

so 18. 'Shake Your Body Down To The Ground' instead...that reggae cover of it even

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 22:59 (nineteen years ago) link
