maybe it's the slightly dorky looking nervous guy he sends out to do his dj gigs?

he won't tell me, but i think shadow ray is made up.

i like the one-sided one that spins backwards that elan gave me. like a lot. i think i'm gonna try to use it in this mix i'm working on right now.... i've decided that using the computer to mix is for losahs. (okay, actually, i've just been practicing on the decks a lot and have gotten much much better.)

shadow ray derrick may
and he said that derrick gave him some equipment

"shadow ray
derrick may
-- elan"
indeed he did get some equipment from him, but i would DEFINITELY bet against it being derrick may. i've heard rumours that Transmat talked to him at one point about signing some tracks.....
― pipecock, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 01:54 (sixteen years ago) link
oasis doesn't really sound like derrick may anyways. but we can dream. they both seem like very, shall we say, strong minded individuals.
― elan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 01:57 (sixteen years ago) link
I'm sure it's not him, but as for OASIS not sounding like D. May, I have to say that tracks like OASIS Seventeen, Nineteen, and Twenty-Two (yes these are the same three that I mentioned above, but they really are standouts to me) are definitely what I could imagine D. May sounding like these days.
― matt2, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 15:10 (sixteen years ago) link
well, if it does turn out to be derrick may i guess i'm sitting on some treasures

i actually dont disagree with that. its tough to be sure, but that shit does have some of the hallmarks of great D.May productions.

what are the hallmarks of great derrick may productions?
― elan, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:37 (sixteen years ago) link
epic melodies, lush arrangements, smooth but pumping drum machine tracks.
― pipecock, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 18:40 (sixteen years ago) link
Yep, and I was just about to fill in the gaps in my FXHE discography (at least the stuff he's got in stock) with my birthday money.

Psychotic_Photosynthesis (the one-sided 12" mentioned above) is really great. were you ever able to work it into a set? it seems like it'd be very...pliant?
― jergïns, Monday, 4 February 2008 08:07 (sixteen years ago) link
this music is pretty rudimentary
― moonship journey to baja, Monday, 4 February 2008 08:18 (sixteen years ago) link
Some of these tracks make really excellent DJ tools, I was really partial to the a couple off the Luke Hess EP.
But I guess the whole debate over form and function's not really worth getting into again is it?
― Siah Alan, Monday, 4 February 2008 08:38 (sixteen years ago) link
all records are deejay tools in the hands of a competent deejay. contrary to some peoples' opinions, i think omar-s shit works fine all by itself. you have to like repetition though!
― pipecock, Monday, 4 February 2008 19:08 (sixteen years ago) link
i think the 'simple than sorry' (007?) record is pretty functional. it does have a more song-y mix but i prefer the 'basic mix' because it seems to go with anything!
― elan, Monday, 4 February 2008 21:19 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah the basic mix is the one on there. i rock it under disco jams, when the rattlesnake sounding percussion comes in, people go nuts.

yeah, he is just killing it. word from the man is that he is taking a break from the heavy deejaying for a while to work in the studio more.
― pipecock, Thursday, 10 July 2008 03:39 (fifteen years ago) link
Yep, saw this elan. I've been checking the FXHE site every day since he put the "coming soon" up for that one.
― matt2, Thursday, 10 July 2008 03:52 (fifteen years ago) link
i am using a track from 002 right now.
unfortunately, my new age california landlord lives above me, and doesn't appreciate me workin the decks late at night. so...fuck, right?
― the table is the table, Thursday, 10 July 2008 04:14 (fifteen years ago) link
The new one os for sale on the FXHE website now. And it looks like he recently re-pressed 002 1/2 (the excellent vocal version of "U") and Compulation #1 (both out of print for while I believe) and also the wacky Kyle Hall one. With those three and the new one, my FXHE collection is complete. Yes!!! This whole record collecting thing is a lot like my baseball cards as a kid.

I'm hoping for mine today!
― matt2, Thursday, 7 August 2008 18:43 (fifteen years ago) link
I got mine too. What you think elan? It's another smash if you ask me. The sound sample doesn't even remotely capture its epic-ness.
In the first minute or so the left channel on mine cuts out/goes to static multiple times. Do I have a jacked-up copy or do you have the same issues?
― matt2, Friday, 8 August 2008 13:39 (fifteen years ago) link
i read some other people saying they had issues with the vinyl, too, but it was a bass-drum-too-loud issue. mine works. i love it! i like it so much better than psychotic photosynthesis, but it's definitely of the same seed. the melodies develop a little more here. i wish he would just go all out melodically in a maximalist style.
― elan, Saturday, 30 August 2008 06:24 (fifteen years ago) link
this might be the first record he did not at nsc and they might have fucked up the mastering.
― elan, Saturday, 30 August 2008 06:25 (fifteen years ago) link
the Luke Hess record is pretty ill, i think.
that said, i need to order a lot of this stuff, epecially the new jams. everything i hear is just "you need to hear this i am destroying me ears to it yessss"

well why not put together a cd of completely unreleased stuff if you feel its that strong? Housemates in fabric first so i'll still look forward to hearing it, i'd actually slept on his stuff until quite recently but been hammering whatever I can get my hands

he says in their press blurb that he wanted to keep some of his more recognized tracks on there for the people who haven't heard them. i feel like he is still widely slept on, hopefully this will change that! i can't believe he didn't put "just ask the lonely" on it though....

i think these the only exclusives. all of the others have definitely been released, but i don't know these:
01. Omar-S - Polycopter02. Omar-S - Flying Gorgars05. Omar-S - Crusin Conant08. Omar-S - 1 Out Of 853 Beats

i've no idea given that this is all new tro me. however, in the press release gubbins :
"there are about four tracks on there that haven't been released yet"
xpost. and there are the four listed !

he has a new 12" out on sound signature too. his first full 12" release that's not on FXHE i think?

is the fabric mix out?
― elan, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 17:40 (fifteen years ago) link
I don't think so elan. According to the RA link above, "Fabric will release Fabric 45: Omar-S on March 16 in the UK and April 7 in the US." Do you have a review copy or something mark e or are you a Fabric subscriber?
― matt2, Tuesday, 3 February 2009 21:40 (fifteen years ago) link
i am looking forward to this fabric business so much. i love his ridiculously cocky persona, too... esp if the dude is actually dorky and nervous as someone hinted above

I'm not in the scene to hear stories but his interviews always seemed to have an aggressive tone. Some of the samples he's used I found very off to the point I can't listen to his work. I like productions in that style but there are people doing better work. Sad to see DJs and producers taking pity on him and sending him support.

bad vibes have dripped from this guy for years, decades now. i don't recommend re-reading this thread, but it's all there early on. final straw was openly mocking victims of d. may a few years ago. my listening life will be just fine w/o AOS.
