^ released last march. almost sad to see jada's going down the same sad piano path instead of leaving it to her kid and doubling down on wicked wisdom.

Is this some of that sad hipster R&B we've been warned about?

Deafening silence (DL), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 15:33 (eleven years ago) link

she just slayed all those mopers at their own game

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 15:36 (eleven years ago) link

song sounds great imo

ThePartyHater (some dude), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 15:42 (eleven years ago) link

and this is exactly the sort of thing i'm used to reading excited ILM threads about and then thinking it sounds like crap

ThePartyHater (some dude), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 15:43 (eleven years ago) link

In 2005, Sharon Osbourne went to see Wicked Wisdom perform at a small night club in Los Angeles, California. She said, "I was blown away. When you see and hear Jada with her band it's apparent that she has nothing but love and respect for this genre of music."[2] In May 2005 organizers announced Wicked Wisdom would perform on the second stage of 2005's Ozzfest.[4] Fans of the festival were outraged, claiming the band did not have the credibility to perform at the music festival.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 15:47 (eleven years ago) link

I like this a lot, actually. I want to give her a hug and take her out for ice cream after hearing it, but I like the song.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 15:50 (eleven years ago) link

Wicked Wisdom was a perfectly fine band

so far, so good... solange! (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 15:51 (eleven years ago) link

The lyrics are very Evanescence.

Solange and thanks for all the fish (Nicole), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 15:51 (eleven years ago) link

She's 12, so that seems just right.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:00 (eleven years ago) link

i love this, although i have to say: the fact that this was written by a 12-year-old is a hell of a metacommentary on extended adolescence in american culture (totally counting myself here)

maura, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:03 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I don't want to knock this too much seeing as she's only 12, and it's okay for a 12 year-old. But... that's about as far as you can go with this, it's pretty meh.

(Don't know if this is a crucial piece of information but I loved 'Whip My Hair'.)

how is 12 "extended adolescence"? a 12-year-old is an adolescent

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:08 (eleven years ago) link

Tell that to the judge.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:09 (eleven years ago) link

I assumed Maura's point was to do with the amount of songs written by adults that take the same tone?

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:15 (eleven years ago) link

ha something just got deleted

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:17 (eleven years ago) link

i remember what it was, and who posted it.

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:18 (eleven years ago) link

i won't be silenced.

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:18 (eleven years ago) link

Sorry NA I felt bad because that was mean.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:18 (eleven years ago) link

i didn't take it as mean, just a joke, so it's cool. anyways i just didn't understand maura's point but what localgarda says makes sense and i don't know what i'm doing posting in this thread anyways.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:19 (eleven years ago) link

I sort of felt the point could just as easily go the other way too.

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:23 (eleven years ago) link

i would tie it more to people trying to write these kinds of songs that are intentionally vague and so easily universalized before calling it a metacommentary on extended adolescence but that's just me

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:25 (eleven years ago) link

There should be a video where a sad Will Smith drops rose petals into the river, and then pushes a volume of Tennyson off on a raft surrounded by candles.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:25 (eleven years ago) link

but intentional vagueness is a sign of immaturity

maura, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:29 (eleven years ago) link

how so

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:31 (eleven years ago) link

How not?

future kendricks (longneck), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:40 (eleven years ago) link

It's what people who don't understand poetry write when they think they're writing poetry.

future kendricks (longneck), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:41 (eleven years ago) link

no, it's a tool/technique. it's something that can be used immaturely or maturely, but not something that is itself mature or immature.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:42 (eleven years ago) link

intentional vagueness? Why on earth would you want to be intentionally vague? Who would want a vague tool?

future kendricks (longneck), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:45 (eleven years ago) link

Who wants to read/listen to intentional vagueness? If you know something you had better tell it to me. Stop being vague intentionally.

future kendricks (longneck), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:46 (eleven years ago) link

how do u feel about ambiguity

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:48 (eleven years ago) link

Ambiguity is great but it's not vagueness and it's not really a tool or a technique. It's more like trying to say something precisely and recognizing complexity without reducing it to an either/or.

future kendricks (longneck), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:53 (eleven years ago) link

Willow going down the same path as her mother is a lot more preferable to Willow going down the same path as her brother:

there's a surprise

Οὖτις, Friday, 11 December 2015 18:19 (eight years ago) link

it is for me! 'why don't you cry' and 'F Q-C #7' are both pretty great. I'll have to try myself.

Does that make you mutter, under your breath, “Damn”? (forksclovetofu), Friday, 11 December 2015 18:31 (eight years ago) link

ok this album is bizarre

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 December 2015 19:30 (eight years ago) link

it tries very hard to give that impression, and it's definitely not boring, but i cringed so much during it. (her delivery is especially try-hard)

cher guevara (lex pretend), Wednesday, 16 December 2015 19:45 (eight years ago) link

mostly it made me think about how very easy it is to give the impression of being a strange weirdo, and how easy it is to conflate that with seeming like a genius auteur

cher guevara (lex pretend), Wednesday, 16 December 2015 19:46 (eight years ago) link

there's something very honestly 15-year-old about the album that i appreciate. she's definitely had a singular existence, yet the lyrical themes are echoed by my students (with different particulars obviously), and the music's veering between grinding and soothing is very adolescent-brain.

maura, Wednesday, 16 December 2015 19:55 (eight years ago) link

was gonna say that i would appreciate "try hard" from willow right now, she really SHOULD be in that state

Does that make you mutter, under your breath, “Damn”? (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 16 December 2015 20:26 (eight years ago) link

right, i appreciate it as an artefact of a teenage mind with a lot of ideas, but i don't think they work as music or songs much. wouldn't be surprised if she works out how to do that in the future, this feels very straight-from-mind-to-record without much editing process

cher guevara (lex pretend), Wednesday, 16 December 2015 20:30 (eight years ago) link

okay going in

So, The 1st, then. Far less WTF than the last album but still pretty singular. "And Contentment" is the pick of the bunch for me.
