perhaps naively, am stunned at how poorly written even a simple news story is on the NME website

Keith Morris, Chuck Dukowski, Bill Stevenson and Stephen Egerton from the Descendents etc

as one of the flag singers treated worst by the group/ginn after leaving, he'd be within his rights to sing it!

Chuck Dukowski: We'd been talking about bringing Dez [Cadena] in too, so we brought Dez in.

Black Flag put up a new song for download, and if that wasn’t an odd enough sentence on its own, they also offered some fighting words for Flag. They posted “***note: not to be confused with the ‘fake’ Flag band currently covering the songs of BLACK FLAG in an embarrassingly weak “mailing it in” fashion*** We urge you to check out the real BLACK FLAG when they hit your area.”

curmudgeon, Friday, 3 May 2013 13:40 (eleven years ago) link

which of these black flags will be better live I wonder.

BF is playing Oakland when I'm planning on being in fucking Europe. maybe I need to rejigger my vacation plans.

i didn't think it was that bad, actually! they have far worse songs in their catalog than this.

I'm not sure I recognize anyone in that photo except for Greg Ginn.

Ron Reyes is in the front. The other two guys have never been in Black Flag before now, as opposed to FLAG which features 100% former members.

that's singer Ron Reyes to Ginn's left and I guess one of 'em is drummer Gregory Moore, and the other is a bass player, I think.

Slip It In (the song) is genuinely terrible. I would call that far worse.

Slip It In is a truly repellent lyric, I agree. It's set to a totally awesome riff and hook, which redeems it as far as a lyric like that could be redeemed, which is not very far.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 4 May 2013 15:13 (eleven years ago) link

Hey Stevie-- did you write that Black Flag book? It's really good!

Poliopolice, Saturday, 4 May 2013 16:49 (eleven years ago) link

Greg Ginn IS Black Flag. There's a thing on ILX like he's such a dick and just a figure of ridicule which is just baffling to me. He doesn't wanna be your friend or do what you want him to do. Until now. Greg Ginn - there's nobody more entitled to play Black Flag songs till the day he dies. The fact that he's been pretty reluctant to get out and do that makes this all the better. Or are we just supposed to say that Black Flag songs shall never be performed because they will never live up to everyone's interpretations of what "Black Flag" is? Whatever you think "Black Flag" is, there's nothing that's going to live up to it. But if you love Black Flag's music then there is a good chance that this will be really fun.

Ron Reyes is still full of energy and is a great performer. And because it's Ron, they will likely favour the earlier material - a bonus. So I'm going to defend this reunion. This is going to stand or fall based on the quality of the music and the show. I'd rather see this than have Ginn go out with Rollins anyday. This has more credibility than the recent Kraftwerk shows (one member, three tools, lots of miming) but I won't deny that thousands had a great time at the shows. This is the voice and the distinctive guitarist of Black Flag. They're the Page&Plant of LA punk. Assuming they can actually do it (and they proved they could last year btw).

everything, Saturday, 4 May 2013 18:23 (eleven years ago) link

There's a thing on ILX like he's such a dick

Also, IRL.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 4 May 2013 18:25 (eleven years ago) link

He's not trying to live up to your expectations. Or did you not pick that up from the songs?

everything, Saturday, 4 May 2013 18:34 (eleven years ago) link

I have no expectations from Greg Ginn, other than that he either pay the bands he signed to his label or give them back their masters.

Greg Ginn's sound/style is certainly identifiable and fairly integral to BF's sound, but it CAN BE replicated. He likes to pretend every member from every era of Black Flag is disposable. Well, he is too.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 4 May 2013 18:39 (eleven years ago) link

So what's your point? He's not allowed to play these songs because he can be replicated?

everything, Saturday, 4 May 2013 18:40 (eleven years ago) link

He DID write them, yknow.

everything, Saturday, 4 May 2013 18:42 (eleven years ago) link

What's YOUR point? He wrote "note: not to be confused with the ‘fake’ Flag band currently covering the songs of BLACK FLAG in an embarrassingly weak “mailing it in” fashion*** We urge you to check out the real BLACK FLAG when they hit your area."

FLAG is every bit as real as the current Black Flag is and he knows it and he can't stand it and now he's being a fucking baby AS USUAL. He can play whatever the fuck he wants with Reyes and two hired hands, but I think most people who've ever loved Black Flag for any portion of their lives are aware Ginn is an asshole and would rather see a version of the band that seems like a natural good time instead of one that looks like a fucking cashgrab. I'll let you decide which one I think is which.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 4 May 2013 18:49 (eleven years ago) link

Also, in regards to the ‘peace, man’ post, Fish Head Cantina is about as lame and shitty as you would expect it to be. The fact that the Ginn & Crew version were playing there told me enough about what to expect.

circa1916, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 23:29 (four years ago) link

lol. I liked the place last night, but it's a place you go to have good beer with friends near the beach. it's horrible for a concert.

the place they're playing this weekend? a local Cafe/restaurant that has poker games and is equally awkward. these are teh places they're playing.

Flag, on the other hand, played the State Theater in St Pete and the shit sold out or damn close.

Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 23:39 (four years ago) link

Shouldn't BLACK FLAG be able to play like real clubs? I feel like they should have two modern hardcore bands opening for them and selling out legit theaters.

Corduroy Stridulations (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 23 January 2020 02:18 (four years ago) link

You would think. It might also be intentional on Ginn's part. They just got announced as playing this big festival here in Sept that fuckin Judas Priest is playing at so clearly the ability is there.

But on the other hand, sales are so shit to Saturday's show, the owner of the venue walked into one of my best friends' cat cafes and just gave him two tickets (which are going for $35 even though it's literally at a restaurant).

Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 January 2020 02:27 (four years ago) link

Like when Saint Vitus albums were out of print for decades but no one else could reissue them, and probably almost every other SST band

it's also been easy for me to forget in today's easy access media era how much it sucked when you wanted to hear an album and you legitimately had no way to fuckin hear it other than buying a used cd or vinyl in an eBay auction and paying way more than it was worth.

Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 January 2020 02:52 (four years ago) link

and hoping the cd you got wasn't a damn cd-r

I mean that’s kinda what the other iteration is doing. They just don’t have the name. I saw Flag as one of the headliners for a 3 day punk festival and the crowd ate it up.

circa1916, Thursday, 23 January 2020 03:15 (four years ago) link

yeah "Gimme Gimme Gimme" was loud and raucous at Flag.

yesterday it was 30% slower than usual and it sounded like four people dicking around on it at a Sam Ash.

I also left because I refused to hear them mangle "Rise Above" or "Damaged I". they were just getting to "Six Pack" when I was leaving and someone screamed 'THIS IS THE SHIT THAT STARTED IT ALL' but he was in the bar and you can barely hear or see the show from there so...i had no idea why he was excited.

i might have left earlier if it wasn't 30 degrees outside. us Floridians cannot handle cold.

Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 January 2020 03:22 (four years ago) link

When he played around here a few months ago, it was at a place outside of town I'd never heard of before that is both a "cantina" and a "rockin' sushi bar". Which might not be so bad - I dont want to disparage this place I've never been! ...

So a Guy Fieri restaurant!?

S-, Thursday, 23 January 2020 04:48 (four years ago) link

it's weird, they played in London recently at the Electric Ballroom with Total Chaos (I mean yeah that's not a good band but they aren't unpopular) supporting. the Electric Ballroom also coincidentally where the Circle Jerks are playing this year. so it seems like they are playing appropriate venues over here

(I didn't go, because of everything I've ever read about this incarnation of Black Flag)

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 23 January 2020 08:06 (four years ago) link

but my god, Ginn could have died onstage and I'd not noticed a difference.

i do believe that if greg ginn died, you'd notice a difference, because a lot of people would suddenly be in a celebratory mood.
