I don't think people should be publicly shamed for being crazy pastors until they are doing things worse than not tipping

iatee, Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:04 (eleven years ago) link

I'm ok with huge public shamefests for small offenses.

Dr. Alfred P. Falfa (WilliamC), Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:07 (eleven years ago) link

I think she was publicly shamed for being a complete sanctimonious jerk and/or jerking money out of someone's hands to make a trite and unconvincing point about the way the industry that person works in is run. It's like if your cab got someplace and you just got out and ran away without paying because in your ideal world, there would be a government-provided network of driverless cars paid for out of a tax on greenhouse gas emissions. And PS, God.

I applaud the idea that you can't just go around jerking people around and insulting them and never get called out on it.

Also just, I mean, special circle of hell who have beef with automatic gratuity on large parties, are surprised by it, or try to weasel out of it. Grow up.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:10 (eleven years ago) link

Haha no worries, it was weak, i can't do this shit on a phone really

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:10 (eleven years ago) link

Mandatory tips are dumb
Passive aggressive notes to service staff are nasty and small
Posting work shit on the internet is begging for the sack
Tithing is for maniacs

b'hurt's tauntin' (darraghmac), Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:12 (eleven years ago) link

tipping is a social custom whereas you legally owe money to a cab driver

it's a good social custom but crazy people break social customs a lot that is part of being crazy

iatee, Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:13 (eleven years ago) link

The one time in my adult life when I wanted to join a church, I showed up for a few Sundays in a row, but then they had am entire sermon about tithing. Never went back.

that futterwacken you like is back in style (how's life), Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:15 (eleven years ago) link

Fwiw the large-party gratuity is part of the bill and not 'social custom' any moreso than sales tax or the overpriced Chocolate Thunder Down Under.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:25 (eleven years ago) link

as long as it's written on the menu, yeah

fwiw she wasn't stiffed, you can't really avoid being charged an automatic gratuity fee afaik

and mandatory tips are not dumb are you serious? a party of 20 might've been one of her only tables that shift, or her only table.

Chocolate Thunder from Down Under? You, sir, do not know your Applebees from the obvious Australianisms of the Outback Steakhouse

always good when the reddit internet can exercise its hatred of christianity and its sublimated racism while also claiming to be on the side of little guy in the service industry

max, Thursday, 31 January 2013 21:43 (eleven years ago) link

Mandatory tips are dumb

Not really. If you've got a big table - 15-20+ people, it's very likely your only table. If they stiff you, you've worked for free AND lose money on the required tip-out.

Even on smaller, 8-person tables, you'll have others but if you get stiffed on a $100 tab, at most restaurants in the US the serving is losing ~$5-6 for the privilege of waiting on those people. I think in the early '00s I was tipping out 3.5% to the general staff plus 5% of bar sales to service bar.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 31 January 2013 21:45 (eleven years ago) link

Parties of 6 or more seem to get autotipped everywhere I go at home, also in UK (where it's an automatic service charge).

Strangely, during the time I waited/bussed tables (and also during the 15 years my sister, who sometimes says racist things, was a waitress) I never once heard of this concept of black (or church) people being stingy tippers. So until there were internet messageboards, I did not know this was a thing.

Gawker also covering itself in glory with stereotypey/racisty commenters (though I grant some of them may have only started posting to Gawk on the thread in question).

max, Thursday, 31 January 2013 21:54 (eleven years ago) link

Gawker commenters in general seem to be just as dumb and offensive as Reddit posters.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 31 January 2013 22:00 (eleven years ago) link

except for Fleshbot commenters, they're class acts

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 31 January 2013 22:01 (eleven years ago) link

oh man, I had forgotten about the existence of fleshbot between say 2008 and now!

left just the tip

乒乓, Thursday, 31 January 2013 22:29 (eleven years ago) link

strange that music and porn were the two subject areas gawker couldn't make work in covering -- both media most beset by mass illegal file sharing, right?. i guess wonkette didn't succeed enough either, but the gawker main covers plenty of that beat itself.

kinda talking out my ass here

goole, Thursday, 31 January 2013 22:30 (eleven years ago) link

i cant really speak to idolator, for fleshbot (and to some extent wonkette) the big issue was ad sales -- hard to sell ads around politics or porn. for fleshbot in particular, the only ads you can sell are porn ads, so its difficult to do strong independent journalism and still make a living, plus you cant sell inventory across the sites in your network. plus there was a point where gawker was doing some pretty good porn-industry journalism and i think it became clear that... whats the point of having the site if flagship is doing the journalism on its niche

max, Thursday, 31 January 2013 22:48 (eleven years ago) link

I see where y'all think that mandatory tipping isnt dumb but it v clearly is.

b'hurt's tauntin' (darraghmac), Thursday, 31 January 2013 22:53 (eleven years ago) link

it is dumb but that is how it works here, and shafting the server is not an appropriate response to its stupidity

mookieproof, Thursday, 31 January 2013 22:57 (eleven years ago) link

its not mandatory, its automatic. its a small but distinct difference.

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Thursday, 31 January 2013 23:00 (eleven years ago) link

I wouldnt stiff the waitress or anything, when in rome etc, but when i leave rome i reserve the right to say 'rome does shit dumb'

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Thursday, 31 January 2013 23:05 (eleven years ago) link

it's not the autotip that's dumb, it's the fact that servers are legally allowed to be paid below-poverty-level wages (just reiterating the obvious here)

1staethyr, Thursday, 31 January 2013 23:07 (eleven years ago) link

but if tips are mandatory u miss out on the karma boost

flopson, Thursday, 31 January 2013 23:10 (eleven years ago) link

i love auto-gratuity because it makes it so easy to leave super-tip
