it's not the autotip that's dumb, it's the fact that servers are legally allowed to be paid below-poverty-level wages (just reiterating the obvious here)

but if tips are mandatory u miss out on the karma boost

flopson, Thursday, 31 January 2013 23:10 (eleven years ago) link

i love auto-gratuity because it makes it so easy to leave super-tip

Canadians are pretty blah, Phil.

Here's a tip: screw you! ;)

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Keep it down with that salty Canadian language.

pplains, Friday, 1 February 2013 00:24 (eleven years ago) link

I knew right after I posted that I couldn't have come up with a more Canadian joke, sigh. But I tip well at least.

I didn't know "she" was a euphemism when it came to tipping!

I worked at headquarters for a buffet chain that re-classed many of their employees as "servers" so they could legally reduce their pay below minimum wage.

Can you imagine working a minimum wage job and getting the memo that your wage was being cut?

How did they make them servers? In addition to their standard tasks like restocking the buffet and cleaning tables, they were made to pour coffee, offer deserts, and do a few other server tasks, and had their wages cut for it.

A buffet chain! Have you ever seen someone tip at a buffet chain?

© all the feelings (Austerity Ponies), Friday, 1 February 2013 14:59 (eleven years ago) link

yup; all of my older relatives who were on fixed incomes loved buffet chains (yours in particular) and would always tip 15% on their meals

upon thinking abt this, i am pretty sure it's an april fool. i was all ready for a vitriolic thread, too.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Monday, 1 April 2013 17:08 (eleven years ago) link

it's def an april fool, woulda been better if they used a reasonable $ figure

iatee, Monday, 1 April 2013 17:10 (eleven years ago) link

Just yesterday, for instance, I wrote some adorkable emails to coworkers that I spent all day on, and I felt like my creative juices were just flowing like boxed wine at book club.

Do you tip at dim sum? I would have thought yes but the dude from china I was eating with said no, and the person behind the counter crossed out the tip line on the credit card thing

Dan I., Sunday, 21 April 2013 16:50 (eleven years ago) link

in general Chinese people are not used to tipping

乒乓, Sunday, 21 April 2013 16:56 (eleven years ago) link

only white people feel so entitled to give/receive tips

乒乓, Sunday, 21 April 2013 16:57 (eleven years ago) link

It felt so wrong not tipping when I was in HK. My brain just cannot compute.

Jeff, Sunday, 21 April 2013 17:28 (eleven years ago) link

one month passes...

how much would you tip on an $18 cocktail. asking for a friend

乒乓, Friday, 7 June 2013 20:07 (ten years ago) link

I think it depends on the context, like if it's $18 cause the place is ripping you off or if it's $18 because it's some crazy drink that involves lots of preparation

iatee, Friday, 7 June 2013 20:10 (ten years ago) link

I would never pay $18 for a cocktail.

I would run out of the place and never go back.

waterface, Friday, 7 June 2013 20:10 (ten years ago) link

I always tip $1 per drink if ordering at the bar. This is partially to encourage establishments to avoid having $18 drinks.

Dear Jehovah what is this mess

like the notion i've got of your never having seen either of the first two coasts. or apparently not knowing what a blended haircut is. but thanks for your personal comments.

The United States borders on three oceans, btw.

pplains, Friday, 7 June 2013 21:07 (ten years ago) link

I guess it's more of "the first two" coasts than anything else. Along with the raw vibe & attitude.

waterface, Friday, 7 June 2013 21:09 (ten years ago) link

as part of the american elite, gabnebb was informed of our near-term plans to conquer india

iatee, Friday, 7 June 2013 21:13 (ten years ago) link

wanted to bring some bicoastal attitude, couldn't let the opportunity slide to lord it over people who aint never heard of the third coast tho, complicated move, awkward execution, i give it a 5.5

j., Friday, 7 June 2013 21:17 (ten years ago) link

you're remarkably ill-informed about which parts of the US face water, waterface
