Definitely a strong Al Stewart vibe with Destroyer.

Arular, but that's really a placeholder for the obviously-robbed Kala. In any case, it's the only one of the 10 that I really love. Like/respect many of the others.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Friday, 1 February 2013 15:06 (eleven years ago) link

xp Ok, maybe it's 50% Tennant and 50% something else that I can't stand. I think I resent this record exactly because it was pitched to me as PSBs + Avalon Roxy, which sounded fantastic, and then it wasn't that at all. But I'll stop dumping on it now.

I don't know what it is about the album that evokes this imagery but listening to Kaputt makes me think dude is singing to an audience of his stuffed animals

Kaputt makes me think dude is singing to an audience of his stuffed animals

This accounts for a lot of North American indie post-1998 or so anyway.

Matt DC, Friday, 1 February 2013 15:16 (eleven years ago) link

the rest is composed and played by the stuffed animals

don't you mean ~childlike wonderment~, lol

lex pretend, Friday, 1 February 2013 15:48 (eleven years ago) link

and then they sent it to Pink Floyd

Mark G, Friday, 1 February 2013 15:50 (eleven years ago) link

xp not much childlike wonderment with Kaputt FWIW, more enervated disillusion.

Neil S, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:01 (eleven years ago) link

Silent Shout changed me.

with perhaps the exception of r-r-r-r-rhythm (Sanpaku), Friday, 1 February 2013 16:57 (eleven years ago) link

i preferred you before

Third

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:05 (eleven years ago) link

In order of preference (top 5 was very, very difficult)

Portishead - Third
The Knife - Silent Shout
Fever Ray - Fever Ray
M.I.A. - Arular
Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot
Miguel - Kaleidoscope Dream
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
Kanye West - College Dropout
Destroyer - Kaputt
The Streets - Original Pirate Material

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:07 (eleven years ago) link

only the combined power of the knife and fever ray puts kaputt in third place, but in any other decade...

christmas candy bar (al leong), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:10 (eleven years ago) link

Dan Bejar sounds too drunk and tired to be filled with childlike wonderment.

MarkoP, Friday, 1 February 2013 17:10 (eleven years ago) link

The 'childlike wonderment' thing comes from a recent Stool Pigeon article about music journo cliches to mean 'sounds like animal collective'. Destroyer doesn't sound like Animal Collective. Neither does he sound drunk, apart from in a slightly uncomfortable avuncular way perhaps.

was counting on your vote :(

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:09 (eleven years ago) link

love: silent shout, third, fever ray, kaleidoscope dream

really like: sir lucious left foot, original pirate material (not that i've listened to it since like 2004)

'sok: sound of silver, arular (strongly prefer kala)

hate: kaputt ('let england shake' wuz robbed)

still have never heard: college dropout

steaklife (donna rouge), Friday, 1 February 2013 18:22 (eleven years ago) link

who are these people who have never heard the college dropout?

The Reverend, Friday, 1 February 2013 19:04 (eleven years ago) link

I've heard "Jesus Walks."

:C (crüt), Friday, 1 February 2013 19:05 (eleven years ago) link

ive heard he saves

johnny crunch, Friday, 1 February 2013 19:06 (eleven years ago) link

I wish everyone could really ~hear~ Streethawk, Rubies, Your Blues et al., I mean, I know those people are in multitudes, those records are widely beloved, but when I read "ennh he sounds drunk" or something something I hate indie something something-- or even "Kaputt is the best album by the band Destroyer" for that matter-- it makes me feel like people are missing out on something so enriching and important, like you were born without a sense of smell or something but w/e. Anyway this is a great list of records

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 1 February 2013 19:08 (eleven years ago) link

Only heard the singles.

a tidy profit in Russia (Eazy), Friday, 1 February 2013 19:09 (eleven years ago) link

I have heard all those Destroyers, and the songs Dan does with New Pornographers, and I still find his talent/style/whatever to not be to my liking. Often, it's actively offensive.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 1 February 2013 19:26 (eleven years ago) link

kaputt

☕ (diamonddave85), Friday, 1 February 2013 19:31 (eleven years ago) link

Miguel is the only one I want to listen to right now, or at any point in the past year.

Sound Of Silver, ya can't be srs

billstevejim, Friday, 1 February 2013 19:33 (eleven years ago) link

Kaputt by leaps and bounds

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Friday, 1 February 2013 19:34 (eleven years ago) link

I don't get Kaputt at all.

billstevejim, Friday, 1 February 2013 19:43 (eleven years ago) link

@ Johnny Fever I meant "~hear~" as in "enjoyed them as I and others do", not "have listened"
and it sucks that he offends you! I mean, that sucks!

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 1 February 2013 19:56 (eleven years ago) link

Kaputt will win this in a landslide. Surely I'm not the only one who saw the options, went 'hm, tough one', read the thread and voted for Destroyer out of spite.

Frederik B, Friday, 1 February 2013 20:10 (eleven years ago) link

frederick b otm, but i voted for it because its the greatest album of the last 10 years, not to spite anyone

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Friday, 1 February 2013 20:17 (eleven years ago) link

you know something, i feel like fever ray and the knife will vote-split, and kaputt on some days is my favorite album since the dawn of the new century. so i've changed my vote.

Went for Sound of Silver because Silent Shout will win anyway.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 1 February 2013 22:29 (eleven years ago) link

Not Third?

Mark G, Friday, 1 February 2013 23:33 (eleven years ago) link

despite some stuff competition kaputt will *probably* win ultimately...

christmas candy bar (al leong), Friday, 1 February 2013 23:37 (eleven years ago) link

*thinks*

christmas candy bar (al leong), Friday, 1 February 2013 23:37 (eleven years ago) link

yes yes, it will be kaputt

christmas candy bar (al leong), Friday, 1 February 2013 23:37 (eleven years ago) link

I forgot to ever listen to "Kaputt". Voted "Third".

Mule, Saturday, 2 February 2013 00:02 (eleven years ago) link

I like Kaputt better than Let England Shake and I love PJ Harvey.
Going with Fever Ray here though. I couldn't get enough of that album and I never got tired of it. The videos were great too.

LeRooLeRoo, Saturday, 2 February 2013 00:09 (eleven years ago) link

wonder what gradeski will vote for

THE KNIFE

rocky dennis horror show (Pillbox), Saturday, 2 February 2013 02:34 (eleven years ago) link

Fever Ray is definitely my favorite of these. And I'm also a fan of PJ Harvey who liked Kaputt better than Let England Shake.

Dan S, Saturday, 2 February 2013 06:02 (eleven years ago) link

makes total sense that destroyer fans would be motivated by spite ;_;

lex pretend, Sunday, 3 February 2013 10:31 (eleven years ago) link

I'm sorry but what the hell is PSB?

Iago Galdston, Sunday, 3 February 2013 19:11 (eleven years ago) link

Arular, but if a choice was "none of the above" I'd have clicked it in a heartbeat. I dislike more of these than I leven sort of ike.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 3 February 2013 19:17 (eleven years ago) link

PSB we're making that green
People always say, "What the hell does that mean?"
P for the people who can't understand
How one homeboy became a man
S for the way we scream and shout
One by one I'm knocking you out
B for the way my DJ buttin'
Other MC's, man you ain't saying nothin'
Rocking on to the brink of dawn
I think Code Money, your time is on
