Twisted Village/Diskovery seconded; there's also the new undergroundhiphop.com store on Huntington near Northeastern and a bunch of random hip-hop/reggaeton stores in the outer neighborhoods - Franklin's CDs in Jamaica Plain and Vibes in Dorchester are shockingly great for their size.

If you're in Allston, you can eat well for cheap practically anywhere - Grasshopper (vegan pan-Asian), Rangoli (great cheap Indian), Spike's (hot dogs), that Lebanese place I can't remember the name of, the Super 88 Asian food court, all those Brazilian BBQs. In JP I can't say enough about La Pupusa Guanaca in Hyde Square; the Cuban restaurant a block away from it was truly exemplary until it was firebombed a couple of months ago. Lately I've been eating a lot of tacos - at the venerable El Pelon in the Fenway, but also Tacos Lupita in Somerville (which might actually be the best taqueria in town).

Grab a copy of the Phoenix or Dig when you're here and check out the nightlife listings - the Enormous Room and Middlesex are better-than-average clubs in Cambridge, with none of the Lansdowne riff-raff and really good DJs (including sometime-ILXoR Er1k Pe4rson on Fridays at Enormous). River Gods tends to be packed to the point of suffocation on weekends lately.

Friend got me a ticket to the Yankees v. Sox in late August. Probably arrive Thursday and leave Monday. I know nothing about the city.

Priceline's areas around Fenway are "Cambridge" and "Copley Square - Theater District" - best shots for staying somewhere that's good for wandering around?

Ha - what a game to go to! Copley Sqaure and the Theater District are both good for wandering around. Cambridge is great but not really that close to Fenway. What hotels are they recommending specifically? I might know something about them.

afghan - i've never been to the helmand in east cambridge (owned by hamid karzai's bro!) but my buddy has and he liked it

there are a couple of ethiopian places but i don't know what's up with them.

there's a new senegalese restaurant called teranga that looks pretty cool and it's not far from where you're staying. you're also pretty close to b&g oysters which is pricey but i've had a v. nice time there.

re: bus i don't think so. if you cut over to beacon st. there may be a bus that goes down to inman but not sure what the frequency of that would even be.

since you've got a beautiful day you could definitely go down and walk along the river and stuff. in harvard two places--shay's and charlie's kitchen have good outdoor areas for getting a beer or some food.

is shay's any good, CAD? I've never been. There's a great, cheap, weekend brunch at Gaslight but it's a bit of a hike – but it's the only way I'll ever be able to afford getting inside that place.

OHHHH! Hop the train to Kendall and go to The Friendly Toast! They have great food and it's cheap. The service is shit but it's worth it. There is brunchy stuff on the menu that is available all the time.

hahaha, the service is slow more than shit, and that should be much less of a factor on a weekday. friendly toast is still the #1 place i would recommend in the boston metropolitan area. and yeah, very close to the kendall T

shay's is amazing but not really because of any "features" it has--same six beers on tap, same three guys working the bar, super cozy and mellow atmosphere, etc. it's just cool because it never changes and because you can kick it on the patio or the steps in good weather.

walked to s&s (stuffed for the day) then MIT and now we're on a patch of grass next to the Charles. so far so good! prob gonna head back to harvard square after. such a nice day.

Tomorrow I'm going to be staying near the Lechmere T in a strange-looking Holiday Inn right on a highway. I'll get there around 7pm. Is there an East Cambridge scene?!... any nice/friendly area I can walk to around there just to check it out/have a couple of drinks and some food, or should I get the bus to Cambridge proper if I want to do that?

you're about a 1/2 mile from a bar called atwood's that i've never been to but have heard good stuff about. you're also about a mile from kendall square which has a bunch of bars and stuff.

Not the greatest area of town, you'd probably want to go to Central, Harvard or Inman for a wider range of culinary choices. Within a mile of your hotel, my favorite place is Atwoods.

Just somewhere I can enjoy walking and taking in what's around - more walking and dropping in places for a drink than sitting in one place, not too bothered about type of food.
