What about Milton acting like a bigger than Andrea idiot? You'd think he would know when a little lie might serve him a bit better than spilling all to the psycho (Milton burned the biters, right?). And as for Tyreese, he's being played so clueless that I can't tell if he's clueless or just pretending to be clueless. How many red flags does a dude need? It's like the great Eddie Murphy routine.

I appreciated Milton's thing there - his give and take with the Governor is a lot more potentially interesting than Andrea's - he seems pretty confident the Governor's not gonna kill him

I didn't see Tyreese as clueless than more conflicted, since it's clear they've had a pretty rough year, like it seems like he's still not sure about how much craziness he's willing to put up for safety. At the end of the ep it seems like he's not gonna fight it for now, unless he's planning to jet

Nhex, Wednesday, 20 March 2013 17:53 (eleven years ago) link

The last place Tyreese and co stopped a psycho cop started ranting "NOOOOOOO!" at them, the Governor is at least a more controlled sociopath.

killfiled by life (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 21 March 2013 08:14 (eleven years ago) link

Why is she not trying to just get outside and take his truck?

(when she unleashed the horde of zombies on the Governor) Andrea actually did something smart!

So she's going to go take his truck now, right?

OK, she's going out the door, hotwire the truck. He probably even left the keys in it.

WHY DIDN'T SHE TAKE THE TRUCK? AND HOW DID HE FIND HER AGAIN? THIS SHOW IS RIDICULOUS!

I thought this, completely. But I did also think he might have taken the keys with him.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Thursday, 21 March 2013 09:22 (eleven years ago) link

I figured she'd look for the keys too, as she knew that it took a zombie decoy for her to barely make it inside the prison last time, I don't know how she expected to get in this time.

Evan, Thursday, 21 March 2013 13:47 (eleven years ago) link

I assumed he'd have taken the keys with him and that she didn't know how to hotwire a car, but that was only after I'd mentally screamed TAKE THE CAR GOD DAMN IT.

It was a schlocky episode, yes, but I'm still hooked on this show. And the Governor's not as bad as he is in the comics. Quite. Yet.

they all are afflicted with a sickness of existence (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 21 March 2013 14:27 (eleven years ago) link

xpost Yeah, but he saw firsthand the kindness and generosity of the rest of the prison gang. All he's seen at Woodbury is people stocking up on guns and prepping zombies to eat women and children, not to mention an at the minimal weird but certainly blatantly paranoid eyepatch wearing leader who is constantly calling them into meetings to passive aggressively judge them. Since this is all clearly a set-up for Tyreese and sister, two of the more appealing characters this show has ever offered, to join the prison gang, the wishy-washiness seems like more foot dragging.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 21 March 2013 14:29 (eleven years ago) link

The Gov. will never be as bad as he is in the comics for the same reason he didn't actually rape Maggie. They just can't go there.

The Gov has also stuck around in the show far longer than he stuck around in the comic.

xp still betting that Tyreese's sister will be the next victim of AMC racism

Nhex, Thursday, 21 March 2013 14:46 (eleven years ago) link

For the first 10 minutes of the episode I thought it was the finale for some reason and was pretty worrisome about how slow it was going. It was a little slow anyway, and I wish Merle's death was a little less "I have something to do go on without me" in style. I always perceive that as cheap writing when a character decides they "have to" and it's suicide, and usually don't get much done in the process anyway.

Evan, Monday, 25 March 2013 19:03 (eleven years ago) link

i thought the effect on Daryl was pretty touching, actually. pretty surprised how they turned Merle face in a single episode, not sure if it 100% worked but there was enough

Nhex, Monday, 25 March 2013 19:09 (eleven years ago) link

I'd say I agree with that element of its effectiveness absolutely.

Evan, Monday, 25 March 2013 19:11 (eleven years ago) link

so much of that episode was just one of after the other of 'wtf are you even doing right now' -- like why on earth Rick would think that Merle wouldn't dip out on him...I assumed that Rick had somehow factored that into the plan and was calling on Merle because of the inevitable doublecross but not.

Glenn & Maggie - sure aww, continue the human experiment whatever but I just rmde at that whole sidebar. "I care about Maggie more than myself" - Darryl's thinking "sure cool great dude just stay right the fuck away from me during the next standoff"

most of it was just the normal characters beggaring belief as usual, but the scene between Darryl and Merle at the end at least was kinda moving and paid off.

and yeah the merle face turn was kind of annoying. like maybe they thought it would make that last scene more effective but cmonnnnnn

Haha. Seriously though, having the Governor get away was a real cop-out

Nhex, Monday, 1 April 2013 12:08 (eleven years ago) link

do the comics focus on more interesting stories in the WD world?

cozen, Monday, 1 April 2013 12:16 (eleven years ago) link

what a disappointing finale - i mean, is the governor going to be back as some kind of bogeyman now?

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Monday, 1 April 2013 12:38 (eleven years ago) link

Where would the Governor have gone if not back to Woodbury? Apparently he never got there after the massacre?

I haven't read any of the novel so I have no clue where they'll take the story next season.

Evan, Monday, 1 April 2013 13:16 (eleven years ago) link

Am kinda baffled as to how they could have so little plot for these last six or seven shows. I thought they were holding stuff back for a bloody finale, it was really low key.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Monday, 1 April 2013 13:49 (eleven years ago) link

They did kinda kill off half of Woodbury, but yeah it did feel kind of anticlimatic

Nhex, Monday, 1 April 2013 14:14 (eleven years ago) link

It was a damp squib of a finale, still looking forward to season 4 though. WD still offers a lot but has been very inconsistent this season. I suppose the frustration is that it falls ever so slightly short of a really great series. All the right ingredients were there but it just fell short, can't quite put my finger on it.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Monday, 1 April 2013 14:31 (eleven years ago) link

I'll give them this though; they almost redeemed Andrea in the end, by at least giving her an explanation for her naivete or stupidity for the season

Nhex, Monday, 1 April 2013 15:02 (eleven years ago) link

But then again, that doesn't explain why she wasted so much damn time not taking off those cuffs, but you know, can't have everything

Nhex, Monday, 1 April 2013 15:05 (eleven years ago) link

this show is hot garbage and i hate it

ampersand cooper black (elmo argonaut), Monday, 1 April 2013 15:05 (eleven years ago) link

I thought Michonne's forgiveness for Rick after he almost gave her up came way too easily as well.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Monday, 1 April 2013 15:12 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah she seems to have a very inconsistent grudge-o-meter. But at the same time she is very "do what you gotta do" overall so I don't know.

Evan, Monday, 1 April 2013 15:27 (eleven years ago) link

Talking Dead drew 5.2 million viewers; more than HBO's Game of Thrones premiere same night.

polyphonic, Monday, 1 April 2013 18:45 (eleven years ago) link

Wow I would never have guessed that.

Evan, Monday, 1 April 2013 19:48 (eleven years ago) link

I can't stand Chris Hardwick 90% of the time, but I stuck around for Chad Coleman and Yvette Nicole Brown this time

Nhex, Monday, 1 April 2013 20:10 (eleven years ago) link

Still frustrated by the fact that the Governor was back in Woodbury and showered by the time Rick and company showed up to trail him. And they didn't think to ask Tyreese(?) whether he was already there or not before yelling to each other about how he gunned everyone down earlier. Episode could have at least used a shot of the Governor and the two henchmen driving off somewhere all intensely to address their abandonment or general absence from Woodbury that night/next day.

Evan, Monday, 1 April 2013 21:46 (eleven years ago) link

wasn't back***

Evan, Monday, 1 April 2013 21:46 (eleven years ago) link

Don't get why they didn't all move to Woodbury and just keep the Gov out.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 00:55 (eleven years ago) link

Thought this was okay overall though. Solid season. They probably put more faith in our emotional connection to Andrea than they should have, but hey-ho good riddance. Did an okayish job of shoehorning in a theme of killing/not-killing and choices etc and they'll get an A from Moe-Dee for that. Like the general idea of Carl having a fucked up moral compass but pretty sure they'll turn it into sulky difficult pubescence shit.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 00:57 (eleven years ago) link

"Don't get why they didn't all move to Woodbury and just keep the Gov out."

because the prison is more secure, even though shitty looking?

akm, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 01:45 (eleven years ago) link

Well there seem to be pretty consistent breaches at the prison but really Woodbury's got some form of electricity and individual homes and presumably some sort of food source and all they've got to do is keep 3 dudes out as well as the biters who seem pretty well kept out unless a person lets them in.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 01:55 (eleven years ago) link

I kind of guess that they did it because they don't want it to seem like Rick and the Gang's whole play was to take over the township of Woodbury but it stretches credibility when there are so few Governor followers left.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 01:56 (eleven years ago) link

Cold blooded Dirty Harry Carl made some good points. Raylan Givens would not have put up with as much shit as Rick et al. have. He'd be dropping bodies with a smile.

There was some great tension in this ep, but it was still mostly wheel spinning bullshit. Agree they gambled wrong that we would be invested in Andrea. Did Michonne know that Rick had sold her out? I can't remember what Merle said. If she did and forgave Rick, that's as stupid as Merle's sudden change of heart last ep. Also, Cutty as slow on the uptake as ever. This was an entire season of people somehow missing what's coming at them in slow motion. On that front, sort of enjoyed the belated prison battle being so brief.

Letting the Gov survive was the worst, because that means he's going to stick around for most of the next season, too. I guess they understand they have to kill protagonists to keep things dramatic, so they need a clear villain to keep the heat off the main cast. I hope they don't bring him back as a good guy or at least a better guy united in the fight against a bigger evil.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 17:15 (eleven years ago) link

i'm resigned to liking this show because i just kind of like watching zombies, and it kinda looks cool and is a good escape for an hour, but it's definitely afrustrating, dull and not very good show almost all the time

carl otm. hopefully he goes off and establishes the Facist Republic of Carlistan

why did they go BACK to the prison
why bring all those people with them when a whiny backpacker is too much trouble
seriously fuck these idiots i have no idea wtf they are even doing anymore i mean COME ON

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 2 April 2013 17:18 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah Michonne forgiving Rick was a whole scene in the ep, you missed it?

xp

Evan, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 17:18 (eleven years ago) link

Michonne did forgive Rick ... for considering turning her over. But he had decided, she just didn't seem to know it, which is why I was trying to remember what Merle said or whether she believed it.

Occurred to me that maybe show runner wanted to kill the Gov, and the network disagreed, which is why there is no closure on that front. Perhaps they did kill him and just either reshot the ending or cut it out. Would certainly explain why this ep rolled like a flat tire.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 17:29 (eleven years ago) link

"why did they go BACK to the prison"

Could just be until they find the Governor. They'd be more vulnerable there until he is eliminated.

"why bring all those people with them when a whiny backpacker is too much trouble"

You could argue that was pre-full-clarity Rick

Just devil's advocating.

Evan, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 17:30 (eleven years ago) link

Oh Josh, I see. Actually I think she forgave him for not going through with it, not whether it was considered/decided. Though you're right wouldn't she assume Merle was carrying out that decision? So yeah I'm not sure.

Evan, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 17:32 (eleven years ago) link

She and Merle did talk about it in that ep - they actually both came to the conclusion that Rick never would've gone through with the trade

Nhex, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 17:52 (eleven years ago) link

BTW, apparently there were some reshoots of the last three eps after Mazzara was taken off the show, so I bet that explains this unsatisfying fizzle of a finale.

some deets: http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/04/01/the-walking-dead-dallas-roberts-milton-andrea/

don't know if that specific bit with Andrea and Milton would've been better without their conversation, tbh. wanna know what else was changed though

Nhex, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 03:20 (eleven years ago) link

weak weak finale. not only do we not get the obvious pay off, but there wasn't even a good hook to keep watching.
