I believe the whole liberation of Winterfell was just as ambiguous at this point in the book as it was at the end of season 2. I think what we are supposed to assume from the tv show is that Theon's men were allowed to walk out of Winterfell since they were handing it over and leaving Theon to the liberators, but this isn't really spelled out.

There was a discussion at one point in s2 between Robb Stark and Roose Bolton concerning what to do about Winterfell.

Stannis and Melisandre are two of my favorite characters from the books so I think I'm a bit biased toward them. I'm always happy when they show up, but I haven't watched the new episode yet.

the expression that flashed across his face when he finds out Davos survived cracked me up.

Thinking about it, Davos is a bit crap at everything, isn't he?

Onions. He's good with them

Trying to think how to phrase this without spoiling anything for the guys who haven't read the books, but I don't Stannis should be written off yet, although I do kinda agree about the tv show depiction not being too enthralling.

But srsly, being a merciless, dead-behind-the-eyes and entirely unbending monomaniac who is not only in a position of power and influence but, more importantly, believes 110% in the validity of that position - well it can make for some interesting developments in a world where basically everyone else is either a craven little bitch or a treacherous backstabber.

they did paint him as quite a fierce warrior in the battle at the end of the last season.

I've enjoyed Stannis's characterization for the most part.

i think this is important to his depiction overall. like even in that big battle i remember him having a determined stoicism that was quite powerful so the flipside of him being just kinda subdued during everyday life works for me

yeah i think cos literally everyone else in the cast has rich thespy presence then stannis' total lack becomes striking and intriguing. imagine if you had someone else doing proper actor ~brooding~ instead, it really wouldnt be that interesting

also they over-egg the melisandre context around him so much he doesnt need to add to it, not til some plot develops anyway

re: destruction of Winterfell. I haven't read the books, but it seemed pretty crucial to me that Robb was persuaded not to go back to Winterfell but to let one of his bannermen's relatives take care of it.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 00:00 (eleven years ago) link

When I re-watched it I seem to remember the Iron Island folk just grabbing Theon and fleeing when they were surrounded by said bannerman's relative. Don't know if I'm just misinterpreting it though.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 00:01 (eleven years ago) link

that's m/l what the show wants you to think right now if i read the scene correctly.

Clay, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 00:04 (eleven years ago) link

bummer about this show is that i'm terrified of googling minor questions so i'm asking here: the guy who saved Dany's life at the end and begged for forgiveness, was he the guy that Tyrion fired as the Kingsguard last season?

Gukbe, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 01:45 (eleven years ago) link

That's Barristan Selmy, who got relieved of his duties by Joffrey et al in season 1 ("naked knight"), not by Tyrion.

Leeena Dunham (Leee), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 01:50 (eleven years ago) link

He's regarded as a legendary knight in Westeros ('Barristan the Bold'), which the show has stressed less than the books.

still haven't seen this ep yet, but just wanted to chime in with the "bite me, Stannis is awesome" crowd

he's one of the actors who really nailed how I envisioned the character when I was reading the books

the pheromones of hot clothing (DJP), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 02:52 (eleven years ago) link

yeah he gets stannis down pretty much as i imagined him. he could be even more reserved and bitter even!

Clay, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 03:17 (eleven years ago) link

stannis is such a grim singleminded mfer, i love it. the depiction on the show is i feel vv otm.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 03:55 (eleven years ago) link

I think Stannis is being played quite subtly too, like he seems deep within some mental prison of his own construction, and only occasionally is he roused, usually by a glimpse of power, or really clearly by the battle.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 07:19 (eleven years ago) link

stannis is my fav book character and the guy who looks like james nesbitt does a great job playing him, but i feel like the show's kinda giving him short shrift, esp his relationship with davos

turds (Hungry4Ass), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 08:06 (eleven years ago) link

Stannis is fine as the taciturn, pensive still figure in the centre of the tug-of-war between Davos and Melisandre, but he's not that compelling a character on his own. In the TV series, anyway.

DavidM, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 12:32 (eleven years ago) link

It's never really clear what his motivations are re: Melisandre, which comes across as a writing weakness. But then he might be playing a long game, so who knows I guess?

Basically I think Patrick Malahide should play both roles in different wigs.

ya and i feel like the sexy melisandre thing kind of makes him less interesting, his monkishness disinterest in anything sexual is a big part of his character imo

zero dark (s1ocki), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 13:12 (eleven years ago) link

I don't know about all of you, but Barristan the Bold in the show does not seem like a fierce, legendary guy. They could have casted a more interesting looking actor couldn't they?

they might as well have ended it with him turning to camera and saying "oh bugger" like a fast show sketch

r|t|c, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 14:07 (eleven years ago) link

Evan, yeah, the show hasn't done much to establish his credibility, though in the books we mostly only hear about his feats second or third hand.

Leeena Dunham (Leee), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 14:17 (eleven years ago) link

I mean the guy doesn't really emit "legendary warrior" at all to me.

Evan, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 14:35 (eleven years ago) link

Even if they haven't emphasized it in the script.

it's quite rare for a show to do unrequited love in this teenage "she can never know" way. though maybe they had one brief chat about it last year and she silenced him swiftly? seem to remember him making a cack-handed move which he's probably turned over in his mind a hundred thousand times since...

xpost it's not that Barristan looks boring, just basically that he looks like a dad's drinking buddy or one of the more socially well-adjusted priests.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 14:37 (eleven years ago) link

Exactly, I couldn't think of a good comparison myself but that's exactly what I mean.
