There are closer sources for someone of Stannis' "blood" but I'm not sure they're being included in the show at all?

I haven't seen the first 2 eps of this season yet, not sure who has been introduced.

Terrific episode with a lot of great stuff going on big and small, from the sequence of Theon being chased through the forest, to Tyrion slowly dragging his chair to the head of the table. And also the scene in RiverRun where the soldier keeps firing arrows at the boat and missing.

I think Emilia Clarke/Daenerys is much better this season; never been a hater, but she's def coming into her own a lot more and she kicked ass in the scene with the king. Surprised she was willing to trade one of her dragons, but I suspect she'll get it back by force when she leaves, again.

DavidM, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 00:17 (eleven years ago) link

"the soldier" is Cat's brother Edmure Tully, who is now Lord of Riverrun.

I've always thought it was unfair to Emilia Clarke because of the material she's been given so far. She did fairly well, I thought, with the later parts of Season 1, and last year she was stuck in no-confidence mode.

Nice to see Brutus again (who was also in this week's Doctor Who episode playing second-in-command to Davos).

Other thread reminded me to drop in to say ive chilled with the lad joffrey briefly he seemed a decent sort.

kind of bummed he doesn't menace people with a crossbow irl

Gukbe, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 00:23 (eleven years ago) link

No, he's not even mean to waiting staff tbh, which is p rare amongst posho southside dub set ime

That is almost disappointing.

They've been cast.

Going back to last week, was the boar that bore the brunt of Joffrey's bolt the same that killed King Bobbert?

Anyway, GOOD EPISODE:

- Blackfish == pimp, fires the arrow and turns away before it's even landed
- Jon Snow == not annoying, though still emo
- Arya's goodbye with Hot Pie unexpectedly affecting
- "The Bear and the Maiden Fair" has a much more melodic tune than I assumed it would

that horse head crop circle thing was creepy and cool. nice callback to the first episode of season one where the white walkers had apparently arranged the wildling corpses in a pattern.

Surprised she was willing to trade one of her dragons, but I suspect she'll get it back by force when she leaves, again.

she seemed a) pretty unlikely by the time that scene was through to piss on a slaver should one catch fire, b) pretty pointed in her inquiry about the loyalties of all 8000 Unsullied once they were hers to command, c) pretty careful to remove the translator from the situation.

Given that the dragon is ultimately a free agent that's imprinted on her and she now commands the city's infantry, I fully expect a bloodbath and will be disappointed if I don't get one.

that was great. the crack about white walkers being some arty-ass motherfuckers ruled.

after watching the first two seasons all at once, wau this show actually gets a lot better when you have to wait for it

The Theon/Bolton storyline was difficult enough in the books. Finding it incomprehensible in the series.

Trans-Europe Stopping Train (ithappens), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 13:54 (eleven years ago) link

I agree with that. The changes have made that story make less sense.

The last of the famous international Greyjoys (Nicole), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 14:02 (eleven years ago) link

Were we even introduced to the Bolton bastard at the fall of Winterfell? I've already forgotten.

Imagine how great this show would have been with Connie Britton as Cersei and Kyle Chandler as Jamie.

Coach Taylor more of a Ned, though.

Julie would be Sansa.

Gracie-Belle would be Arya!

I liked the awkwardness of the Lannister council meeting with all the protracted chair shuffling. For true versimilitude it should have had Tyrian accidentally spilling coffee all over his papers.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 15:43 (eleven years ago) link

lame episode this week, tbh. the stupid Pod/whorehouse stuff, the confusing horsechase, and then way too much people-in-agony tortureporny shrieking, to be honest. (a little theon, breanne, woman in labour, even jamie.)

continued to enjoy the use of interpreter/subtitles though - nice little character piece (even if cersei's "clever secret plan" is stupidly facile). and thought Robb Stark was great in his couple of scenes.

sean gramophone, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 15:46 (eleven years ago) link

Are there any other legit Baratheons knocking about at this point or does she know about Gendry?

Yes.

I think Emilia Clarke/Daenerys is much better this season; never been a hater, but she's def coming into her own a lot more and she kicked ass in the scene with the king.

I'm a hater and still am, though Kit Harrington has turned out infinitely worse, IMO. Last season the writing made his character extra stupid, but I still think he's a weak link, acting-wise, and wish that his dog could replace him.

Yes! The highlight of the episode. It made me realise how much I've missed Varys. This was his first appearance in S3 if I'm not mistaken.

when did that happen, by the way? i had no idea he was marrying anybody (and am still not clear who this is either)!

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 18:17 (eleven years ago) link

lysa arryn, crazy woman from season 1, lives in castle in the sky with idiot son, sister of catelyn, former of wife of jon arryn, hand before ned. the marriage idea is a new development to secure the support of the vale, one of the big deal kingdoms - wardens of the east - that has been looking after itself and largely out of the wider political picture to this point. littlefinger was childhood friends with lysa and catelyn and uniquely well positioned to move in

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 18:23 (eleven years ago) link

It's Lysa Arryn - Catelyn Stark's sister and, more importantly, Jon Arryn's widow and thus the Lady of the Vale (Jon Arryn was the Hand of the King for Robert Baratheon before Ned Stark had the job - the old man that got murdered just prior to season 1 beginning). Lysa's the crazy lady with the horrible sickly little son that's still breastfeeding at the age of 10 or whatever. But she's also the ruler over one of the most important of the Seven Kingdoms, and she doesn't currently have a side in the war. So Tywin's offering Littlefinger the chance to become Lord of the Vale in return for him bringing in Lysa Arryn and the Vale on the side of the Lannisters in the war.

Windsor Davies, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 18:23 (eleven years ago) link

littlefinger is also a minor noble who's made himself rich, but doesn't have an old holding (like the vale) to really bring him the respect he wants

max, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 18:45 (eleven years ago) link

Oh hello who is that attractive person?

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 18:48 (eleven years ago) link

thanks guys. that's who i thought he was talking about... but it didn't make a lot of sense to me.
wasn't she furious with the Lannisters because she'd figured out they'd poisoned her husband? Why would she throw her support behind them now, even with Littlefinger up there?!

One other question I had about that episode; when Aria asked the Hound if he remembered the last time he was up there… any idea what that was about?

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 19:02 (eleven years ago) link

He killed Sansa's direwolf

Gukbe, Tuesday, 16 April 2013 19:02 (eleven years ago) link

No, Ned killed Sansa's direwolf. The Hound killed the butcher's boy that Arya was playing with.

having not read the books I'm p much lost on every aspect of that plotline -- who was torturing Theon, where they got him from, who set him free ("your sister sent me"?), who just rescued him ...
