Looks like we've touched on everything interesting about them!

"Cming Down" and "Fade Into You" are like two equally delicious pizzas from different pizzerias.

I've had Only In Dreams since it came out but never really listened to anything else of theirs until today. Didn't really enjoy I Will Be at all, no songs really stood out to me at all. Bedroom Eyes and Coming Down are the big highlights from Only In Dreams.

I then listened to End of Daze which is pretty much perfect. If they can keep up that kind of quality for their next full length album then they could well make a masterpiece. It seems like their songwriting has got so much better very quickly.

Agree that Coming Down sounds just like Mazzy Star but I enjoy it so much more, that is one amazing vocal she does on it.

I'm sure the Dum Dum Girls get talked about on another thread. Maybe an old Rolling Indie one? The Pretenders-aping on a few of the tracks on the last one was incredible, but they're great songs either way.

New single isn't really grabbing me that much. I was expecting big things from the new album after how fantastic that last EP was.

Still think End of Daze is their best if you're including EPs but I do really like this. Apparently a lot of their older fans aren't too happy with this album but I think this shiny production suits them.

It's not one of my favorites, but the baseline of quality here is quite high. It would certainly be the best song on a weaker album.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 31 January 2014 16:59 (ten years ago) link

This album sounds so much less forced/mannered than some of the other recent work, less like a pastiche and more like the work of an artist filtering her/their influences. This could easily have come out on 4AD in 1994, so I kind of automatically love it.

currently playing this to my o/h on Spotify while he tries to work out who it is. In the first 2 seconds he guessed Ladytron which is kind of otm. Now it's sounding a bit Garbagey.

i notice this a lot in the video clips of their live-sets. still love this band.

I love this band too, but not the new sound. Only In Dreams was perfect.

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 1 February 2014 22:09 (ten years ago) link

yeah. also, that last ep they released was the best thing they've done, imo.

Daniel, Esq 2, Saturday, 1 February 2014 22:14 (ten years ago) link

Agree that the EP is the best thing they've done, it's almost perfect. This album is really great too but not quite in that league.

She does seem to be singing the song in the wrong key on that Letterman performance.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 2 February 2014 03:49 (ten years ago) link

Finally listened to the album, and yeah, quite excellent! I'm still partial to the lofi scuzz of the first album, but the songcraft on Too True is a lot better than the second album IMO.

Dunno why the videos embedded above didn't make much of an impression on me, maybe Dee Dee's off-key singing put me off in the Letterman performance?

I am really getting sick of synth pop.

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 17 May 2015 14:04 (eight years ago) link

Fortunately for you, that's not what that is. It's that weird hazy mutant r&b which there seems to be a surplus of in the past 2-3 years. It was really refreshing at first, but now there's SO FUCKING MUCH of it that you really have to dig for songs that are good rather than just half-assed ideas run through the machine. Sort of disappointed Dee Dee's was one of the latter.

Sometimes I feel like I am living in an episode of The Simpsons

I felt compelled to shed the alter-ego instead of trying to morph Dum Dum Girls into something else. I didn't want to mess with that legacy. So yeah, I'm Kristin.

I don't see what is Simpsons-like about this. She's losing the alter ego Dee Dee and going by her real first name for her new project. Is there something weird about that?

JRN, Friday, 29 January 2016 16:35 (eight years ago) link

I realize her real first name is Kristin but "Kristin Kontrol" is also an alter ego, is what I was getting at here

So this Kristin Kontrol album is a motherfucking scorcher!

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 20 May 2016 03:44 (seven years ago) link

As a pretty big Dee Dee fan I hope it grows on me a bit more. Lots to love overall but some of it feels a little too generic/anonymous pop to me . . . e.g. parts of Wannabe, Skin Shed, Going Thru the Motions. I'm only like three listens in though and I suspect it'll sound better on the speakers in the living room this weekend then it has on my sleepy morning train commute. Wish I could've caught her DJ set last night but plan to see one or two of her shows next month.

She hasn't actually announced the dissolution of Dum Dum Girls, has she? Interview in Hollywood Reporter this week said that she "announced in January her departure from the band to focus on her solo project" but I don't think I'd read that anywhere else and am hoping it's just a misinterpretation of what she said. Haven't checked my iTunes stats but I wouldn't be surprised if Too True was my most played album over the last two years.

early rejecter, Friday, 20 May 2016 14:20 (seven years ago) link

Isn't she the Billy Corgan of DDG?

Jenny Ondioleeene (Leee), Friday, 20 May 2016 17:51 (seven years ago) link

DDG was mostly her yeah at least until the last album. I don't think she announced her 'departure from the band' she just said there was different sorts of music she felt like making and it didn't fit into the DDG ethos.

akm, Sunday, 22 May 2016 14:57 (seven years ago) link

as for the Kristin Kontrol album: I'm not feeling it at all and I like absolutely everything else she's done. It's not that I disagree with the approach, I just think the songs aren't very interesting or strong musically, or at worst they are bad (Skin Shed).

akm, Wednesday, 25 May 2016 13:16 (seven years ago) link

There's some good stuff on the album, I was just expecting way more based on how much I loved the first single.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 25 May 2016 13:30 (seven years ago) link

i like the few kristin kontrol tracks i've heard. everyone needs to break out the synths at some point or other in their career.
