I think the Baratheons may have been raised separately, Robert was a ward of Jon Aryn with Ned Stark.

oh hmm. but then why do robert and ned both have pronounced northern accents given that they were raised in the vale

He is. Also just found out Conleth Hill aka Varys is Irish too, and a Nordie at that.

The discrepancy between the Stark kids can be sort-of handwaved away because some of them would have been closely brought up by Catelyn.

Not one of them sounds Northern Irish though.

He and Michelle Fairley come from the same small town in Antrim.

Arya has a slight twang to her accent which I can't quite identify - maybe west country?

Kit Harington was born in London, England[3] and lived there until he was 11,[4] the son of Deborah Jane (née Catesby), a former playwright, and David Richard Harington. His paternal great-grandfather was Sir Richard Harington, the 12th Baronet Harington.[5] Through his father, Harington descends from politician Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville, bacon merchant T. A. Denny, clergyman Baptist Wriothesley Noel, merchant and politician Peter Baillie, peer William Legge, 4th Earl of Dartmouth, and MP Sir William Molesworth, 6th Baronet.[5]

So, erm, pretty upper class then.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 11:31 (eleven years ago) link

Given all that I'm assuming the difference in Stark accents is deliberate. The girl that plays Sansa is from Northampton although all the younger ones have a kind of generic thesp accent.

Lena Heady (Cersei) is from Yorkshire, which you can detect from her normal voice on the audio commentaries. It isn't strong, but it isn't the soft RP she uses in the programme.

I love Ygritte's voice! I don't mean the accent, I mean the hoarseness.

Ygritte's ancestral cribs. Funny how she has been cast as lowly types in her TV work: a housemaid in Downton Abbey, and a wildling in GoT.

I never bothered reading any more into this than "the children couldn't do Yorkshire accents". They all use their real accents.

gyac, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 16:09 (eleven years ago) link

yeah ygritte's voice is dead sexy

the bloke with the eyepatch in the brotherhood sounds irish, authentically so.

That's Richard Dormer, who also plays the central character Terri Hooley in the movie Good Vibrations. Saw his name and couldn't believe it was the same guy.
