infirm neophytic child (zachlyon), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 02:26 (eleven years ago) link

i voted iggles but most popular vote was flyers

Mordy, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 02:27 (eleven years ago) link

u couldn't vote for sixers bc no one thinks it'll be them

Mordy, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 02:27 (eleven years ago) link

wtf? flyers made the playoffs last year

mookieproof, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 02:32 (eleven years ago) link

probably why they got the most votes

Mordy, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 02:32 (eleven years ago) link

i mean they suck and i hate them, but that's hardly a drought

mookieproof, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 02:33 (eleven years ago) link

i think it's bc it's the first time in 21 years thatnone of the Philly’s top four major sports teams made the playoffs.

Mordy, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 02:35 (eleven years ago) link

good post; almost makes me feel bad for philly's top four major sports teams not making the playoffs . . .

nah. and you can have the sixers

mookieproof, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 04:17 (eleven years ago) link

time to put doc in a shoebox and bury him in the backyard eh?

J0rdan S., Sunday, 5 May 2013 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

It's sad to see someone so great fall apart like this.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 5 May 2013 19:39 (eleven years ago) link

losing it worse than lincecum at this point. his K rate remains ok, batting average against wasn't really that bad going into today (.240), walk rate up slightly. but man, he's given up only one less homer this year than he did in all of '11 and he's already halfway to last year's total.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Sunday, 5 May 2013 21:03 (eleven years ago) link

i love that halladay says he's been dealing w/shoulder discomfort since april 24 but they trotted him out there for two more starts. wtg phils, what a terrible organization.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 9 May 2013 18:19 (ten years ago) link

yeah, maybe

Mordy , Thursday, 9 May 2013 18:23 (ten years ago) link

welcome to philadelphia, carlos zambrano

mookieproof, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 18:37 (ten years ago) link

"We got positive feedback from everybody who has interacted with him recently,'' Proefrock said. "We did our due diligence. It's just good business.

"We got a feel for his desire to come back and his sincerity about that, and what kind of condition he's put himself in. It's a minor league deal. We're not signing him to a $90 million deal like the Cubs did, but you still want to get a guy who's committed and is going to conduct himself appropriately. As far as we're concerned, that was satisfied."

they sound super confident

coley 1-6, awwwwwwwwww

ballin' from Maine to Mexico (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 23:34 (ten years ago) link

lol hamels (1-8)

mookieproof, Sunday, 26 May 2013 20:30 (ten years ago) link

I haven't gone through Hamels' game log, but when I looked at his overall stats yesterday, 1-8 didn't seem right--they weren't that bad.

http://mlb.si.com/2013/05/27/cole-hamels-record-philadelphia-phillies/?sct=uk_wr_a2

7-3 seems overly optimistic--his ERA is almost 4.50, and you're bound to lose some quality starts. Maybe 6-4 or 6-5 would be more in line with everything else?

clemenza, Monday, 27 May 2013 23:36 (ten years ago) link

dom brown huh

Mordy , Thursday, 30 May 2013 04:10 (ten years ago) link

cheaper than Ryan Howard, eh?

ballin' from Maine to Mexico (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 1 June 2013 15:55 (ten years ago) link

yeah, let's maybe not sign him to a $125M extension

Mordy , Saturday, 1 June 2013 16:07 (ten years ago) link

grand slam walk-off hr for mayberry in the 11th!!!1

Mordy , Wednesday, 5 June 2013 04:09 (ten years ago) link

Wow, first player EVER to hit two homers in extra innings!

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 5 June 2013 17:01 (ten years ago) link

I think under old rules, you only got credit for a single if you hit one out w/ the winning run on third. (at least in deadball times)

ballin' from Maine to Mexico (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 5 June 2013 17:15 (ten years ago) link

damn dom brown is having a season - another HR

Mordy , Wednesday, 5 June 2013 19:38 (ten years ago) link

woo! .500!

Mordy , Wednesday, 5 June 2013 20:11 (ten years ago) link

(pedantry alert)

Mayberry was not the first player to hit two homers in extra innings:

Mayberry-- who did not start the game-- also homered in the bottom of the 10th to re-tie the game after Miami took the lead in the top half. No player in the majors had hit two extra-inning homers in the same game since Baltimore's Mike Young did so against the Angels on May 28, 1987. And Elias confirms he was just the sixth player ever to do that.

Mayberry also didn't start the game. Since RBI became official in 1920, no player had ever come off the bench to record 5+ RBI, with all of them coming in extra innings.

veteran leadership from paps: ". . . if I'm going to have to put up with this year after year, then no, I don't want to be here. Why would you? Why would anybody?"

mookieproof, Monday, 29 July 2013 02:25 (ten years ago) link

as long as he still looks the way he does i don't expect him to act like any more of a veteran than his dugout persona

ty based gay dead computer god (zachlyon), Monday, 29 July 2013 04:47 (ten years ago) link

i always find it funny when relievers go full bridezilla. it's like - you can't even pitch more than one inning, dude.

...No I won't. Stiff neck.

So I heard Phils CEO Dave Montgomery this morning, here's what he said:

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=21414

And late pinch-hitting speaker at the banquet (which I didn't buy a ticket for) tomorrow, LARRY BOWA! Hoping to sneak in just for the speech, to hear some profanity.

Miss Arlington twirls for the Coal Heavers (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 1 August 2013 22:01 (ten years ago) link

ask Bowa how he feels about talking mad shit about Matt Kemp back in 2007

Mordy, Saturday, 26 August 2017 23:29 (six years ago) link

as pointed out on the EW podcast the other day, 8 of the ten pitchers he's victimized kinda stink.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 27 August 2017 15:28 (six years ago) link

you fuckin kidding me

nomar, Sunday, 27 August 2017 20:33 (six years ago) link

8 of the ten pitchers he's victimized kinda stink

this may be true . . . but i don't see anyone else doing it

mookieproof, Sunday, 27 August 2017 20:40 (six years ago) link

sorry, it wasn't his eighth consecutive game. i was checking his game log and didn't notice one of those days was a doubleheader. still, 8 of his last 9.

nomar, Sunday, 27 August 2017 22:18 (six years ago) link

future footnote

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Monday, 28 August 2017 00:37 (six years ago) link

https://deadspin.com/rhys-hoskins-is-off-to-one-of-the-greatest-starts-to-a-1798496048

In just 18 games he already has 1.2 WAR, or 8 percent of Ryan Howard’s career total (14.9) over 1,572 games.

nomar, Monday, 28 August 2017 16:59 (six years ago) link

Colin: The only thing with Hoskins that is really out of whack is his HR/FB, which currently stands at 40%. It’s not unreasonable to think he’ll be close to 20% given his power and the park he plays in. That’s still like 50 HR. Pretty good, I say!

Dave Cameron: Well, yeah, no one can really keep hitting 85% of their XBH as HRs. Every well struck ball he’s hit has left the yard, basically. That’s not going to last.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 30 August 2017 20:58 (six years ago) link

two weeks pass...

damn, Hoskins

nomar, Thursday, 14 September 2017 00:43 (six years ago) link

up to 18 HR (and 26 walks!) in 34 games

nomar, Friday, 15 September 2017 01:56 (six years ago) link

in 115 triple-a games this year he had 75 K and 64 BB

presumably the league will figure him out as it did judge, but he's for real

mookieproof, Friday, 15 September 2017 02:02 (six years ago) link

Ryan Howard's total bWAR over the ten-year period following his MVP award: 6.3

Hoskins' this year (before today): 2.2
