we get 40 posts into the thread w/o mentioning Chaka Khan's cover of "I Feel For You"??

M Specktor (M Specktor), Thursday, 22 May 2003 20:07 (twenty years ago) link

No Doubt, "Waiting Room". He takes over the track with just his backing vocals.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 22 May 2003 23:25 (twenty years ago) link

sorry, were manic monday and waterfalls by prince?

robin (robin), Thursday, 22 May 2003 23:36 (twenty years ago) link

Fake Prince in the house world... half of Rooty and Bob Sinclair's "Got to Be Free."

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 22 May 2003 23:45 (twenty years ago) link

there's no janet on this thread?!

i had no idea about 'manic monday'. god i really love prince.

minna (minna), Friday, 23 May 2003 00:03 (twenty years ago) link

no Janet because Jam/Lewis is parallel Prince, not fake. also, The Gold Experience is definitely Prince pastiche but also great. and half of Rooty? try all of it.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 23 May 2003 00:17 (twenty years ago) link

I'd really have to stretch out backwards to think of "Where's Your Head At" as a Prince pasiche. So, we'll go with 9/10ths of Rooty.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 23 May 2003 00:20 (twenty years ago) link

Nobody answered Robin so I will: yes, "Manic Monday" was written by Prince for the Bangles (under the pseudonym "Christopher"). "Waterfalls" had no Prince involvement, but sounds like it :)

Another facsimile: Pig (80's WaxTrax dude) - "Never For Fun"

Pretty much most of "Her Highness" by Medicine. Especiall... damn, what is the name of that track? _Aarhus_

Why is it I can only stand Prince songs when they're done by other people?

well, "WYHA" doesn't resemble much Prince I can think of either, but its spirit is right there. anyway, you know what I'm talking about. ;-)

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 23 May 2003 07:34 (twenty years ago) link

oh, and duh--Roxette, "The Look," which he could very well have sued them for! ditto MUCH early Chicago house, though since he stole the rap from JM Silk's "Music Is the Key" for "Cindy C" everything there is probably kosher

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 23 May 2003 07:39 (twenty years ago) link

also, re the original idea behind this thread...this excellent new NYC garage rock band (yes, really, they're good) called the Fever do a fab version of "Glamorous Life" (their deletion of "The," not mine, btw). it's on their EP, Pink on Pink, out next month

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 23 May 2003 08:03 (twenty years ago) link

one year passes...
As far as ripoffs and homages go, this year alone, Basement Jaxx released 'Plug It In' as a single, that song's guest vocalist, JC Chasez, can count '100 Ways' and 'Shake It' (featuring 'The' Basement Jaxx) from his album, Schizophrenic, as well as part of his overall aesthetic, the Freestylers released 'Push Up', which is like a lesser xerox of Prince funk and 'Plug It In' and Superthriller released their debut album, Superthriller 1, which includes the singles 'Ahjustwannadance', 'I'm Gonna Leave At Three So Call Me' and 'Smoking Kills'.

Discussion and listing of others, please! I love the dude's influence.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 13:46 (nineteen years ago) link

there should b another thread 'unprince prince' which is all the songs prince does which don't sound anything like his good influential stuff. u can include everything after GRAFFITI BRIDGE onwards on that list.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 2 November 2004 13:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Chelonis R Jones a bit? A bit more tenuously, Prince basically rules house at the moment - the influence isn't necessarily as obvious as it is with Basement Jaxx but a lot of the shinier upbeat electro-house stuff has that thick sparkly plastic feel to it. This really came through for me on the Mei Lwun mix.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 13:54 (nineteen years ago) link

There could be a thread named 'undead prince' where we post photos of the little guy's rotting reanimated corpse wearing a red leather jumpsuit with enormous shoulderpads.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 13:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Tim, I always thought 'Bucci Bag' was a way underrated nu-Camille moment.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 13:59 (nineteen years ago) link

The FM Edit or the original?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:16 (nineteen years ago) link

The original (don't remember the FM edit). The Cagedbaby remix was Princey electro in a way. Thinking it over, there's something Princey about the Chemicals' 'Get Yourself High' (the weird bass sound and minimalism), and even Rex too ('Heartbeats', particularly) - that'll be the thick, sparkly, plastic feel. there's also Alexis Strum/Kylie - 'Still Standing'.

Also, I'm off to look for the Mei Lwun thread - I realised I have one of his tracks on the Deeper Concentration comp.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:28 (nineteen years ago) link

I get "Bucci Bag" confused because I'm not sure if my CD single is mislabelled - the "FM Edit" is the one everyone plays, it's got that punishing robo-bass riff right through it that sounds like it's sampled from The Normal's "Warm Leatherette" or something. The same riff runs through the longer, spacier , slightly less brutal and occasionally amost trancey "Doria Dub".

The "original" is more of an epic electro-house number with a live post-punk bassline, occasionally rockish breakdowns in the drums and skronky guitar. It could actually be a house remix of "House of Jealous Lovers".

Potentially the titles for the original version and the dub are mixed up on my single, although what's labelled as the "Doria Dub" certainly *sounds* like a dub mix.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Mislabel - "The original" sounds more like the Playgroup remix. The other Prince-aspect about 'Bucci Bag' is the snare clap at the end of every 4th bar.

(Also, house mix of 'HOJL' sorted by Cosmos last year)

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh cool, I had the Playgroup mix and didn't even know it! Yeah that handclap is very Prince (see also Teedra Moses's "Complex Simplicity" Barms!)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Will do. That mix is pretty much the best thing Playgroup has ever done, outside of a couple of album tracks (and 'Number One' would love to be a proper part of this thread, I suspect, there's some link to Controversy in there, I think). The P-group and C-baby mixes are on the same 12", and was therefore probably my favourite 2003 mix package.

MJ's Bad LP skirts the edge here. Prince himself dubbed it "pathetic".

two years pass...

I picked up The Family's debut (only?) record this week for 1 quid in the Zavvi. This really is a great, sort of lightweight, carefree record. Reminds me a bit of Controversy. I wondered if anyone knew just how much this was a Prince record? He doesn't get much in the way of producing or writing credits, but it sounds like every little thing was done by him, even some of the vocals. Anyone know just how large his contribution was? Cheers

i agree with "oh sheila" and "closer" for sure

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Friday, 30 January 2009 19:17 (fifteen years ago) link

"oh sheila" is kind of a bad rip-off. "Closer" is... well, closer, but has a few more tricks up his sleeve than to come right out and say something appalling like "My whole existence is flawed."

He wrote all the songs on that, did most of the guide vocals also. There are plenty of the demos for the album floating around the
interwebs. A sweet rehearsal with The Family is out there, too.

btw - kind of a rare record at the moment, at least in the US! Out of print for years.

yeah, i've never heard the Family or Madhouse records and i'd like to.

I think most of the albums made in the 1980s by members of Prince's "family" are mostly or fully written by Prince, and he plays most of the instruments on them too. This applies at least to The Family album, the first three albums by The Time, the first Sheila E. album, the first Jill Jones album, and the Vanity 6 and Appollonia 6 albums. The reason why Prince isn't credited on these albums, or he gets the credit only for one or two songs, is because the artists or Prince himself didn't want it to look like they were mere puppets of his.

Tuomas, Friday, 30 January 2009 19:27 (fifteen years ago) link

The Family record is as good as the Vanity 6 record is fun and dumb i.e. not incredibly so, but not as bad as Mazarati (although I really really wished Mazarati were good. That album cover. Prince's attempt to cash in on superficial 80s dress fashion via Purple Mercenaries with occasionally great songs is really fucking funny and awesome in retrospect.)

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Friday, 30 January 2009 19:28 (fifteen years ago) link

btw tuomas i've been listening to those 12" mixes a lot. the kiss extended version is crazy, it almost sounds like he went back and did it while making lovesexy.

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Friday, 30 January 2009 19:29 (fifteen years ago) link

"High Fashion", "Screams Of Passion", "Nothing Compares 2 U" are the highlights on that Family record.

"Yes" was better than most of Lovesexy, but I'm a Lovesexy hatah, so keep in mind.

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Friday, 30 January 2009 19:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Whatever happened to St. Paul the dude?

I remember seeing a video for a song "If I were a Rich Man" in the late 80s thinking, man this really sucks compared to the Family, and then that was it.

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Friday, 30 January 2009 19:32 (fifteen years ago) link

I think the Family album is okay, but the male vocalist on it isn't very good. The best Prince side projects I've heard are the titular album by Jill Jones and Exodus by the New Power Generation. The Jill Jones record has good song material ("Mia Bocca"!) and she's simply a better singer than Vanity or Sheila E. or Morris Day or whoever it is who sings on that Family album. And Exodus simply has some great funk grooves, plus a few pretty ballads and a weird but cool psychedelic rock number.

Too bad most of this stuff has been out print for years, and since even Prince's own albums from the 80s have never been reissued and remastered, it seems unlikely the side projects will be reissued soon either.

Tuomas, Friday, 30 January 2009 19:33 (fifteen years ago) link

i saw st. paul with a band of ex-prince dudes (incl. erik leeds) last year. it was an decent show, but they stayed away from prince tunes and st. paul seemed a little bitter that the club wasn't packed and that he's not more famous.

# Prince changed the lyrics "You don't have to watch Dynasty/To have an attitude" to "You don't have to watch Sex and the City/To have an attitude" and later to "You don't have to watch Desperate Housewives" and "You don't have to watch Queer Eye for the Straight Guy/To have an attitude" during his 2004 Musicology Tour.
# In his performances at the O2 Arena in London, UK, Prince changed the lyrics to 'You don't have to watch Big Brother/To have an attitude."

two weeks pass...

Was listening to Talking Heads' "Making Flippy Floppy," from 1983, the other day and thinking that the chorus (and the synth hook in particular) is kind of Prince-like. But maybe that's just because it's Bernie Worrell, and he influenced Prince's keyboard style?
