i didn't think it was that bad, actually! they have far worse songs in their catalog than this.

I'm not sure I recognize anyone in that photo except for Greg Ginn.

Ron Reyes is in the front. The other two guys have never been in Black Flag before now, as opposed to FLAG which features 100% former members.

that's singer Ron Reyes to Ginn's left and I guess one of 'em is drummer Gregory Moore, and the other is a bass player, I think.

Slip It In (the song) is genuinely terrible. I would call that far worse.

Slip It In is a truly repellent lyric, I agree. It's set to a totally awesome riff and hook, which redeems it as far as a lyric like that could be redeemed, which is not very far.

Hey Stevie-- did you write that Black Flag book? It's really good!

Poliopolice, Saturday, 4 May 2013 16:49 (eleven years ago) link

Greg Ginn IS Black Flag. There's a thing on ILX like he's such a dick and just a figure of ridicule which is just baffling to me. He doesn't wanna be your friend or do what you want him to do. Until now. Greg Ginn - there's nobody more entitled to play Black Flag songs till the day he dies. The fact that he's been pretty reluctant to get out and do that makes this all the better. Or are we just supposed to say that Black Flag songs shall never be performed because they will never live up to everyone's interpretations of what "Black Flag" is? Whatever you think "Black Flag" is, there's nothing that's going to live up to it. But if you love Black Flag's music then there is a good chance that this will be really fun.

Ron Reyes is still full of energy and is a great performer. And because it's Ron, they will likely favour the earlier material - a bonus. So I'm going to defend this reunion. This is going to stand or fall based on the quality of the music and the show. I'd rather see this than have Ginn go out with Rollins anyday. This has more credibility than the recent Kraftwerk shows (one member, three tools, lots of miming) but I won't deny that thousands had a great time at the shows. This is the voice and the distinctive guitarist of Black Flag. They're the Page&Plant of LA punk. Assuming they can actually do it (and they proved they could last year btw).

Also, IRL.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 4 May 2013 18:25 (eleven years ago) link

He's not trying to live up to your expectations. Or did you not pick that up from the songs?

everything, Saturday, 4 May 2013 18:34 (eleven years ago) link

I have no expectations from Greg Ginn, other than that he either pay the bands he signed to his label or give them back their masters.

Greg Ginn's sound/style is certainly identifiable and fairly integral to BF's sound, but it CAN BE replicated. He likes to pretend every member from every era of Black Flag is disposable. Well, he is too.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 4 May 2013 18:39 (eleven years ago) link

So what's your point? He's not allowed to play these songs because he can be replicated?

everything, Saturday, 4 May 2013 18:40 (eleven years ago) link

He DID write them, yknow.

everything, Saturday, 4 May 2013 18:42 (eleven years ago) link

What's YOUR point? He wrote "note: not to be confused with the ‘fake’ Flag band currently covering the songs of BLACK FLAG in an embarrassingly weak “mailing it in” fashion*** We urge you to check out the real BLACK FLAG when they hit your area."

FLAG is every bit as real as the current Black Flag is and he knows it and he can't stand it and now he's being a fucking baby AS USUAL. He can play whatever the fuck he wants with Reyes and two hired hands, but I think most people who've ever loved Black Flag for any portion of their lives are aware Ginn is an asshole and would rather see a version of the band that seems like a natural good time instead of one that looks like a fucking cashgrab. I'll let you decide which one I think is which.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 4 May 2013 18:49 (eleven years ago) link

Hey Stevie-- did you write that Black Flag book? It's really good!

i did! and thank you!

black flag *is greg ginn. it's his band, his vision, and it mostly always has been. really don't like the new song, though, but didn't imagine i would, and don't know if i'd really want to see this version of black flag, going by what i heard about greg's bf reunion show in the early 00s, though ron is one of my favourite flag singers, and i'm sure the show would be fun. would love to see Flag though - chuck dukowki's own sextet and keith's OFF! are excellent, too.

media conglomerates are pedaling the same product (stevie), Saturday, 4 May 2013 19:56 (eleven years ago) link

So I've listened to this song a few more times and my opinion hasn't really changed. It seems like a perfectly decent song, far from from awful, and probably better than I would have expected. If I could change anything, it would probably be the vox, which sound kinda silly. At the very least, i'd reduce them significantly in the mix. They seem far too loud. The guitar riff is pretty cool and should be louder.

LOL. Get your nose out of ILM and into the real world and you might see how fucking ridiculous that sounds.

I'm certainly not one to tow the ILM line on anything, but I think it's true that a lot of people (even fans) think Greg Ginn is an asshole-- certainly a lot of his ex-bandmates think that. He's withheld money from bands, jealously guarded master tapes, is religious about removing Black Flag videos from Youtube (like rare concert footage), etc. But that doesn't have much to do with the music, although I think it does say something that he's been the only constant member of that band. Doesn't mean he isn't good at what he does, or that he isn't a true pioneer in the field. It's just that a lot of people have found him personally hard to deal with.

Poliopolice, Sunday, 5 May 2013 00:02 (ten years ago) link

You should check out Stevie's book. It's not an anti-Ginn book by any means, but you get a certain impression of Ginn as someone who isn't that diplomatic or interested in empathizing with others.

Poliopolice, Sunday, 5 May 2013 00:04 (ten years ago) link

hey everything I know plenty of people from the old school SST/Pedro scene who think Ginn sucks too, people who don't even know what ILM is (see Tom Troccoli's posts on this board, etc.). I hear your arguments about his own catalog how he has the right to play it, but as long as he continues to fuck over everybody who ever released a record on his label who can't afford the legal fees to buy their rights back, your arguments are as weak as Ginn's output for the last 20 years.

also, it's TOE the line, polio.

as opposed to FLAG which features 100% former members.
Except for Edgerton.

If Ginn, Dukowski or any of these guys want to ruin their legacies or play in pathetic cover bands, I'll check it out.

Mike Dixn, Sunday, 5 May 2013 13:04 (ten years ago) link

It's not a great tune, but that new song does sound like Black Flag and you can tell it's Greg Ginn on guitar.

Out of curiosity I went and looked up for some video of Flag!!!! with Keith Morris. Check out every other person with a cell phone or camera filming the band. Wacky.

What a prick. Raymond Pettibon came up with the name and the logo for Black Flag anyway. Wonder if Ginn ever paid his brother anything for that.

brio, Sunday, 4 August 2013 19:25 (ten years ago) link

They fell out in the mid-80s after Pettibon discovered SST types cutting up his original artwork for flyers and such. Be surprised if he's seen a single dollar from his work (a common SST complaint).

There shouldn't be a thread for Dennis Perrin tweets. (stevie), Sunday, 4 August 2013 19:31 (ten years ago) link
