they could've had 3 scenes with theon total all season and they would've achieved just as much as they have. this time was definitely gratuitous in just about every way possible. grrm wrote this one and i imagine he has been disappointed with the full frontal noodz count in s3 so far.

Agreeing with the two posters above, too much pandering to the 15 year old king demographic at the minute.

fyi theon doesn't actually appear in book 3, these scenes have all been written in for the show, and it shows

ciderpress, Monday, 13 May 2013 14:32 (ten years ago) link

aside from theon's scene this was a p good episode!

The bear scene was terrifically exciting, very well done indeed. Also loved Tywin & Joffrey and the the dragons this week.

I was half hoping that Jaime would push Noah Taylor over the fence into the bear pit

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 13 May 2013 15:40 (ten years ago) link

I was anticipating that happening. Didn't, though.

I don't mind the nudity usually - I embrace it! - but, wow, the Theon scene was so ridiculous and obvious. 'Ooh, you're going to get good times - haha, not really; we're going to torture you instead!'. Big surprise. I suppose that was the point, but... why bother?

Yeah, good episode again. I can't believe Ygritte would be that naive abt buildings, tho?

yeah the writhing girls went on for so long and I was like, "look, I don't know if sadoboy is going to come in here with a stretching rack/ wicker man & bee helmet or if the girls are going to pull out a roll of needles and go 'Audition on him but can we just get this whole thing OVER with ragh'

Yeah, good episode again.

eh I dunno. aside from the stuff chap mentioned in his post (bear pit, Tywin/Joffrey scene) I didn't get much out of it. most of the plotlines seem to be spinning their wheels although Melisandre bringing Robert's bastard to King's Landing seems to be going someplace interesting. Rob, Theon, and Jon Snow are all super boring right now.

dmr, Monday, 13 May 2013 17:07 (ten years ago) link

i would not have guessed the population of kings landing at 500k

lag∞n, Monday, 13 May 2013 17:10 (ten years ago) link

no that seems off

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 13 May 2013 17:14 (ten years ago) link

King's Landing is extremely populous, but rather unsightly and dirty compared to other cities. Its population is estimated at more than 500,000,[15] although this number varies during winters and in times of war, when people take shelter behind the city walls. George R. R. Martin has stated that the city is larger than Medieval London or Paris but smaller than Medieval Constantinople or Ancient Rome (each had a population of about 1,000,000).

mizzell, Monday, 13 May 2013 17:16 (ten years ago) link

i thought everything was good except for theon's scene. nice to see jon get an injection of spine for a moment there, and clarke is starting to fall way behind sansa actress in the terribleness stakes as dany's character develops. i will say i am surprised by the extent to which they are stretching some things out - there was definitely more scope for things to actually happen this season and that has been sacrificed in the name of timing as much as anything, to have things happen at certain points in the season and to leave things in a certain place at the end of it.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 13 May 2013 17:22 (ten years ago) link

hmm sorry if that is too books-y for this partic thred

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 13 May 2013 17:23 (ten years ago) link

the fact that grrm thinks that kings landing would be bigger than a mediaeval london or paris is the problem really, there is no reasonable basis for that imo except, yknow, this is fantasy so fuck it i guess

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 13 May 2013 17:25 (ten years ago) link

all the cities seem super small on the show

lag∞n, Monday, 13 May 2013 17:26 (ten years ago) link

like i wouldve thought kings landing was like 10k

Wouldn't it be effective for Dany to where a fire crown or something? Wouldn't hurt her, would be gnarly.

Evan, Monday, 13 May 2013 17:34 (ten years ago) link

Literal fire on a crown I mean.

Evan, Monday, 13 May 2013 17:35 (ten years ago) link

Just a little "Why wouldn't they have thought of this?" kind of idea.

Evan, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:06 (ten years ago) link

it was a bit of a slow ep

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Monday, 13 May 2013 18:19 (ten years ago) link

xp probably mechanically challenging. she could dip a crown in oil and light it, but it wouldn't burn for very long. or i suppose she could build a little fire inside the crown and have someone drop twigs in there throughout the day the keep it going.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:20 (ten years ago) link

also i think her survivng the bonfire is supposed to be like a one-time miracle and not necessarily a sustained superpower

ciderpress, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:24 (ten years ago) link

the dragons can be in charge of stoking it they dont seem to have anything better to do lazy dragons

lag∞n, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:24 (ten years ago) link

Doesn't have to last all day even- it would be a helpful intimidation tool when meeting people she aims to intimidate

Evan, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:25 (ten years ago) link

She also wasn't hurt by the scalding hot tub water in season 1(?) so I figured it's a constant attribute.

Evan, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:26 (ten years ago) link

xpost

Evan, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:26 (ten years ago) link

oh wow. "where = wear" a few posts up. I hate typo-ing like that.

Evan, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:28 (ten years ago) link

also i think her survivng the bonfire is supposed to be like a one-time miracle and not necessarily a sustained superpower

There was a moment earlier in the first season where she was unaffected by high heat, tho

polyphonic, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:35 (ten years ago) link

Martin: No, no Targaryans are immune to fire. The thing with Dany and the dragons, that was just a one-time magical event, very special and unique. The Targaryans can tolerate a bit more heat than most ordinary people, they like really hot baths and things like that, but that doesn't mean they're totally immune to fire, no. Dragons, on the other hand, are pretty much immune to fire.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:38 (ten years ago) link

i like how the dragons keep growing

lag∞n, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:39 (ten years ago) link

also, i think the dragons burned the shackles off of her in the Tower of something something too.

and i liked how they added breaker of chains to her title and shes a hardcore abolitionist now

lag∞n, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:41 (ten years ago) link

also kind of enjoyed how Joffrey is likely right about the dragons while Tywin is so very wrong.

yeah that was a good scene

ya classic professional hubris blind to the black swan (dragon) where the mind of a child can see

lag∞n, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:46 (ten years ago) link

wasnt sure tywin was being totally sincere there, felt more like he was like just trying to shut the kid up so he could go about the business of governing the kingdom himself

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Monday, 13 May 2013 18:48 (ten years ago) link

could be but not worrying abt baby dragons across the sea while fighting a war on yr doorstep seems p sensible

lag∞n, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:50 (ten years ago) link

Every scene with Tywin this season involves very symbolic physical positioning/actions during conversations.

Evan, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:52 (ten years ago) link

ya but this is tywin the master schemer, its like his raison d'etre to squelch any possible threats to his house, i bet he's not taking this lightly

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Monday, 13 May 2013 18:52 (ten years ago) link

it's like watching a black hole, he just sucks everyone else's perceived power right out of them when he holds court, it's awesome to watch it work

ok i have a question, danys sidekick solider guy, he was/is a spy for the lannisters? a few weeks ago in the previously on game of thrones segment they had a scene from the first season that i didnt remember where he was warning them abt her via letter i think that made it seem like that was the case

lag∞n, Monday, 13 May 2013 18:54 (ten years ago) link

ya i cant remember if he was outed or not??
